Basketball Play - Charlotte Hornets - SLOB Fade Handoff Rescreen

Charlotte Hornets - SLOB Fade Handoff Rescreen

Greg Youncofski 04/19/2016

Another well designed SLOB from the Hornets. This play is effective because it has many options that the defense has to worry about. By having Jefferson catch the ball outside the three-point line, Batum has plenty of room to take the handoff and go all the way to the rim. By having so much action going on, no defender is just standing around waiting to help – everyone has to worry about their man. See More

Basketball Play - Oklahoma City Thunder - SLOB Double Ballscreen Fade

Oklahoma City Thunder - SLOB Double Ballscreen Fade

Greg Youncofski 04/19/2016

A very well designed late game SLOB play by the Thunder. For coaches looking to run this set, I believe it is important to make sure your best ball-handler/playmaker is coming off the double ballscreen, as this will make the man guarding the second screener to show/hedge out because he has to respect the ball-handler on the drive/shot and this rotation could make him late getting back to his own man. This is also effective if the defense is switching, because now the man coming off the fade screen has a mismatch. The Thunder do a great job here clearing out the side so that if Durant does not have a shot, he has plenty of room to take his man. See More

Basketball Play - SFA 1-4 Clear Backscreen

SFA 1-4 Clear Backscreen

Adam Spinella 04/13/2016

Stephen F. Austin and coach Brad Underwood were very aware of who they were -- they had a great lead guard in Thomas Walkup. By putting the ball in his hands and making a 1-4 high set look like a clearout for him to go to his strong hand, defenses were sucked into reading the action for him. Instead of running a set to clear out on his side, Underwood ran lots of traffic through the lane, getting all four help defenders to stand in the lane at one point. When the chaos cleared, what was left was an empty weak side, a perfect opportunity for a lob at the rim. By using their best shooter as the screener, there was no opportunity for the play to be foiled. See More

Basketball Play - Denver Nuggets - Zip 2 Angle Hammer

Denver Nuggets - Zip 2 Angle Hammer

Adam Spinella 04/12/2016

This action is a wrinkle on the popular NBA Hammer action by flooding the strong side with movement and screens. Most zipper actions are run to swing the ball across sides of the floor, so help defense will particularly fall into the trap after the zipper screen when the action returns to that strong side. That allows the hammer to be run to perfection. And with sharpshooter Danilo Gallinari as a screener, there's little opportunity to give help away from him. The Sixers help off Will Barton in the corner instead, and that allows Gallinari to get to the rim for the dunk! See More

Basketball Play - Georgetown 5 Up Backdoor

Georgetown 5 Up Backdoor

Adam Spinella 04/12/2016

BLOB, or baseline out of bounds, plays are wonderful opportunities for a backdoor action because the defense gets sucked close to their man as they deny a pass towards the rim. Georgetown's John Thompson drew up this great set to get a backdoor out of a baseline inbound situation, sucking the entire defense away from the rim in order to do so. Thompson isolates the man guarding the inbounder as well, turning him into the help defender on a backdoor. As many coaches know and communicate to their players, the offensive player inbounding the ball is always dangerous once the ball gets inbounded. By paying too close attention to the inbounder, a defensive team will have no help at the rim on a backdoor cut. See More

Basketball Play - Indiana - Yogi Attack

Indiana - Yogi Attack

Jens Hakanowitz 04/07/2016

The Indiana Hoosiers used this play during the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The setup and decoy actions at the beginning gave the defense enough distractions to cover, which made it easy for Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell to attack over a stagger ball screen, with both bigs seperating out of it. Multiple options can show up after. A clear path drive for the point guard, a kick back to the 4 for a possible shot or high low, a dish or lob to the 5 rolling to the rim. See More

Basketball Play - Syracuse - Princeton Action

Syracuse - Princeton Action

Dana Beszczynski 04/01/2016

The Syracuse Orange ran a version of the Princeton Offense in their NCAA Tournament game against Gonazaga. Here is a breakdown of this very dynamic set with movement to keep the defense off balance, down screens for the shooters, and two ball screens. Syracuse has a very athletic team and possesses a great ability with their three guards to knockdown the 3 pt shot. See More

Basketball Play - Syracuse "FIST"

Syracuse "FIST"

Dana Beszczynski 04/01/2016

The Syracuse Orange have 3 very good shooters in Trevor Cooney, Michael Gbinije, and Malachi Richardson. This is Syracuse's "FIST" Set against M2M Defenses. Shooter runs into the lane, tries to get the defender leaning one way or the other and then the shooter sprints out off the single screen looking to catch & shoot. Once the first shooter goes out, the PG who filled the wing, makes his run into the lane and follows. See More

Basketball Play - Syracuse - Orange SPNR Action

Syracuse - Orange SPNR Action

Dana Beszczynski 04/01/2016

The Syracuse Orange went from being a team outside the field of 64 to Final 4 contender in 3 short weeks. Jim Boeheim's team is peaking at the right time and with a lot fo athleticism, zone defense, and scoring punch, they present a difficult match-up for anyone right now. This is a nice action that flows out of the Fast Break with the SG going down and receiving a screen whereby he can pop and shoot if open or as in this situation, the big sprints to screen triggering the dribble drive attack.
