Basketball Play - Block Curls

Block Curls

Adam Spinella 07/27/2013

Jerry Sloan used to use this play in a BLOB situation to free up his shooters and create confusion amongst the defense. Because of the odd formation and amount of bodies in the paint as a result, Utah would get a free look from the periemter or catch a defender out of position in the paint trying to compensate for their team's poor defensive strategy. Basketball Play - Open Flare

Open Flare

Adam Spinella 07/24/2013

This is a great end of game play for a team to use in a Secondary Break. With about 7 or 8 seconds left on the clock, there is enough time to dribble up in the full court and engage in this action. Likely it has to be a practiced and a default set; if it were to be drawn in a huddle for a late-game play it is likely the defense would apply some sort of full-court pressure, meaning more time would be needed to execute the set. Basketball Play - Cone Handle Shots

Cone Handle Shots

Kyle Gilreath 07/24/2013

I love this drill because it works on several components of improvement all at once: Ball Handling: Force your players out of their comfort zone and to dribble lower and quicker each time, that is the only way to improve Footwork: Creating space and finishing with the least amount of dribbles Finishing Through/Over/Around the Defense: This drill consists of a multiple of different types of shots and finishes that are great to add to your players' repertoire. Basketball Play - Slice Read Option

Slice Read Option

Adam Spinella 07/23/2013

Last season in Cleveland, Byron Scott ran this play so he could get Kyrie coming off a re-screen action and to let Dion Waiters have the chance to work in isolation at the top of the key. When the Cavs would go small and put Wayne Ellington at the 3, defenses would have a tough time chasing their shooters off the perimeter and wrestling in the post against Thompson and Speights. Basketball Play - Stagger Pick & Roll

Stagger Pick & Roll

Brandon Huntley 07/22/2013

Today's play is a Stagger Pick and Roll set used to give your team a few options against the defense. It is very important that your players see the floor as there will be three different options happening at once. Your best shooter should start with the ball at the top of the key. If you have post players who can shoot well from the outside, this play will use them as a decoy to open up the key on the pick and roll. See More

Basketball Play - Fence Curl Pop

Fence Curl Pop

Adam Spinella 07/18/2013

Fence Curl Pop comes from Rick Adelman, which he has run both in Sacramento and with the Minnesota Wolves. Adelman usually calls this play out of timeouts when he sees something in the way the defense is playing screening actions. The play is designed to get a layup for a shooting guard or an open elbow jumper for a power forward. When Kevin Love runs this play for the Wolves he steps out to the three point line, making this an extremely difficult play to defend. See More

Basketball Play - Blind Hit

Blind Hit

Adam Spinella 07/18/2013

Blind Hit is a very quick backdoor option run by current UTEP and former USC Men's Basketball Coach Tim Floyd. Whether a defense is over-pressuring or caught napping, this is an effective backdoor option to get your guard a layup or dunk. See More

Basketball Play - Flare Slip

Flare Slip

Adam Spinella 07/17/2013

The San Antonio Spurs ran this play against the Minnesota Timberwolves three years ago in an end game situation. It was a simple yet effective play to get a layup, which worked because the defense had to respect Manu Ginobili coming off a flare screen. See More

Basketball Play - Creating Space Rim Finishes

Creating Space Rim Finishes

Kyle Gilreath 07/17/2013

One problem many young players face and something the pro's have perfected, is the ability to create space by setting up your defender for a move. In this drill I taught our players to jab at the rim to get the defender off and then jab in another direction to get the defense to recover to a side. Once you get the defense to a side you can then make a move and attack. Utilizing coaches/managers with pads in areas where the player will experience contact enhances this drill to the fullest. The coach/manager on the ball try to slap at the arms/ball to teach your players to be strong with the ball when jabbing and ripping through for a move. See More

Basketball Play - 2 low

2 low

John Leonzo 07/11/2013

Here is a quick hitter that can be run effectively against man to man so long as the offense reads the defense correctly. The effectiveness of this play lies in the screen the screener action that occurs between 2 and 3. 2 will always curl this screen looking to score, if 3's defender helps on 2, 1 should look to hit 3 in the short corner for a shot oppertunity. Basketball Play - Spurs Stagger On-Ball

Spurs Stagger On-Ball

Kevin Bruinsma 07/08/2013

The spacing on this set is incredibly tight which places high importance on the ball handlers ability and the screeners timing. Here the San Antonio Spurs run #9 Tony Parker off a stagger screen while allowing #20 Manu Ginobili uses a #21 Tim Duncan ball screen. With the spacing being so tight the help defense is non-existent as they are hugged up with their own man. See More
