Basketball Play - Flat

Flat

Kyle Gilreath 05/29/2013

This is a baseline out of bounds play that I ran for my Junior Varsity squad this past season. I initially drew it up figuring it would work well versus man defense. However, as the season progressed, I found that this play worked almost every time against a zone (especially 2-3) zone. It takes some time to teach younger players how to screen in different situations but my 5's become great at sealing under the rim and almost always resulted in a lay-up. See More

Basketball Play - Schrempf Shooting

Schrempf Shooting

Daniel Murphy 05/29/2013

Saw Detlef Schrempf demo this on Youtube. It's one of my favorite shooting drills near the basket because it requires good footwork. If a player knows how to position their body and use their feet to set up a drop step, hook, and up and under they should be able to score near the basket. After catching and drop stepping, player 1 continues curling around the cone and catching a pass. The next shot is a catch and shoot hook. The third shot is and up and under. The fourth shot is if a player is denied a pass in the post they spins away from the defense for the lob pass. After getting the footwork down without defense then dummy defense should be applied. The defense should over play to allow the offense player to get a feel for the reads. As an offensive players skill and comfort level increases with the dummy defense, then the defense should increase their intensity. See More

Basketball Play - Quick Rip

Quick Rip

Kyle Gilreath 05/23/2013

The Miami Heat ran this Quick Hitter last night versus the Indiana Pacers which gave them two different looks throughout the game. Norris Cole did an excellent job creating an angle towards the rim. This made the defense shift to help in the paint an opened up both looks. See More

Basketball Play - NBA Play of the Day May 20: New York Knicks Horns Double

NBA Play of the Day May 20: New York Knicks Horns Double

Kyle Gilreath 05/20/2013

The New York Knicks ran this play during their playoff loss versus the Indiana Pacers Saturday night in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. There are severals aspects I love about this play. 1. I love running staggered pick & rolls (especially at lower levels) because most coaches do not teach their players how to guard. **I teach the first big to level the screen to prevent the slip and the second big to be the hedger/trapper/helper. 2. By using Carmelo in the first pick, the defense did not want to detach itself for too long and giveaway a look from the Knicks' best player. 3. The Knicks spaced two shooters in the corners (2-JR Smith, 4-Copeland) which made it difficult to help on this action and give up an open corner three. See More

NBA Play of the Day May 17: New York Knicks 15 Power

Kyle Gilreath 05/17/2013

In an attempt to get Amar'e Stoudamire going during his limited minutes, Mike Woodson had the New York Knicks ran this post-up action several times last night in their win over the Indiana Pacers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. Spreading the floor our the way the Knicks did made this action difficult to run and would be an excellent option if you have a dominant post player on your team. By using Jason Kidd to set the screen on Stoudemire, you make the defense make a decision to switch or help and recover. In my opinion, switching is not even an option. By helping and recovering, the defense arrives late and allows the post player to catch and make a move towards the rim quicker. See More

Basketball Play - Miami DHO Pin Down

Miami DHO Pin Down

Daniel Murphy 05/17/2013

Opening play ran by the Heat in their 94-91 closeout game 5 win over the Bulls 5/16/13. With two dynamic scores handing off and a potential Haslem ball screen the Bulls defense was focused on the strong side. Having Bosh pin down for Chalmers game him space to attack the hoop in the center off the court. Altough Boozer was guarding Haslem, and Haslem was standing on a wing, Boozer was protecting the rim. If the Heat had a stretch 4 in at the time, Chalmers would have had a clear path to the rim, or a kick out to a wide open shooter. See More

Basketball Play - Olympiacos 1-4 High

Olympiacos 1-4 High

Daniel Murphy 05/16/2013

Olympiacos ran this set with less than two minutes left in the first half of their Euroleague semi final win over CSKA. It is a relatively simple play, with the guards looping to set up a side ball screen, but the corner drift and flare from 4 to 1 kept the weak side defense occupied to free up the roll man. 2 could have passed to 3 in the corner, 1 coming off the flare, 4 slipping a screen, 4 stepping out after setting the screen, or 5 could have popped after setting the screen. Basketball Play - 1-on-1 Closeout Drill

1-on-1 Closeout Drill

Kyle Gilreath 05/16/2013

During today's NBA Draft Combine on ESPNU, the Small Forwards were put through this excellent 1-on-1 Closeout Drills to test the players' offensive and defensive skills in isolation situations. I love this drill because it puts the players in a realistic situation closing out from help defense to a 1-on-1 situation. See More

Basketball Play - Horns Loop Fist

Horns Loop Fist

Daniel Murphy 05/15/2013

Miami ran this play in their game 1 loss to the Bulls. Running Allen over the top of James and Anderson and having Miller spot up in the corner shifts the defense to the left. Noah got disconected from Anderson while helping on Wade coming off of the ball screen. x4 (Boozer) did not enter the lane because he had Mike Miller spotted up in the corner. Anderson was able to get deep post position inside of Boozer because the floor was spaced. NBA players are so good at the throw back pass off the ball screen x3 did not help on the roll man. This defensive rotation breakdown is not typical of Coach Thibodeaus team. See More

Basketball Play - Memphis Horns Rip

Memphis Horns Rip

Daniel Murphy 05/15/2013

First play Memphis ran in the second half of their game 2 win over OKC. This is a great set play that involves backscreens and cuts to the rim. This puts a lot of pressure on the defense. Although Memphis did not get a great shot attempt, there are multiple opportunities to score on this play. Starting the point guard in the corner allowed a little-big back screen and allows the best passes to feed the best post player isolated on the block. See More

NBA Play of the Nigh May 15: Golden State Warriors Elbow Flex

Kyle Gilreath 05/15/2013

I am sure I have posted this play in the past but it is one of my favorites so I wanted to post it again! The Golden State Warriors went to this action in the 1st Half of Game 4 versus the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Semi-Finals. This elbow set into a flex action is very popular in the NBA; Stan Van Gundy ran it religiously in Orlando. While us coaches are all very familiar with the Flex, I have learned recently that many young players today are not familiar with how to run the play NOR guard it. In my opinion, if you have two great scorers on the floor, this is a very difficult action to guard. The defense has to respect the flex cut give up a lay-up. Then by pinning down on the screener, the defense must make a decision how to guard and if they over-react the big will be open slipping to the rim. See More
