Basketball Play - 10-11 Houston Rockets - High Post Entry with Fake Hand Off and Double Screen

10-11 Houston Rockets - High Post Entry with Fake Hand Off and Double Screen

Basketball HQ 03/18/2013

With this play make sure you have a passing 4 man. He has to read the defense as 3 cuts towards him for a hand off. If he can read the defense properly, you can get easy lay ups off of the hand off action. Make sure you 1 is setting the first screen in the double screen for 2, so the defense does not switch the guard to guard screening action. This play is from the 2010-2011 Houston Rockets season. Basketball Play - Floppy Down

Floppy Down

Kyle Gilreath 03/14/2013

Last night in the Big East Tournament the Villanova Wildcats ran this turn-down pick & roll action in their win over St Johns. Jay Wright does a great job clearing out most of the baseline help in this set but convincing the defense a side pick & roll is about to occur. The 2 (guard) also does a phenomenal job setting up the bal with a ball/step fake middle and getting his defender moving over the screen that never happened. See More

Basketball Play - 10-11 Houston Rockets - High Post Entry with Fake Hand Off, Pin Down & Counter

10-11 Houston Rockets - High Post Entry with Fake Hand Off, Pin Down & Counter

Basketball HQ 03/14/2013

With this play your 4 & 5 have to be a passing big. The 4 has to be able to read the defense as 2 comes off for the hand off, and your 5 has to be able to read the defense as the 2 comes off of the pin down screen. Practice with your players that will be coming off of the pin down action on reading the defense. This play is from the 2010-2011 Houston Rockets season. See More

Basketball Play - New York's staggered triple screen

New York's staggered triple screen

Mark Travis 03/11/2013

Aside from having an extremely talented offensive player like Carmelo Anthony, the biggest reason that the Knicks rank third in the NBA in scoring efficiency is the beautiftul playbook that Mike Woodson has assembled. Granted, a lot of the stuff the Knicks run today comes straight out of Mike D'Antoni's scheme - in fact, I think New York runs more of D'Antoni's stuff than the Lakers do - but Woodson deserves a ton of credit for how he has handled the offense this season. Here is a play that New York occasionally runs in semi-transition or in the half-court. It is a high staggered triple screen that takes advantage of New York's staple offensively: a stretch four. Usually, that player is Carmelo, but in this particular example, with Melo out with an injury, Steve Novak assumes the role of a stretch four. The staggered triple screen action has a pair of pick-and-pops and a pick-and-roll to cap it off that can send the defense scrambling to find their assignments and put them in a poor position to defend in the case of a mismatch or good ball rotation. When the Knicks ran it against the Cavs a couple of days ago, Cleveland got all out of place following Novak at the three-point line and left Amare wide open on the roll for an easy dunk. See More

Basketball Play - Quick Double

Michigan State also ran this great half-court action Thursday night vs Wisconsin. Tim Izzo does a great job using different motions to get numerous results out of his plays. What I love about this play initially you get the defense so caught up on the backscreen that it makes it even more difficult to guard the stagger. See More

Basketball Play - 51 Special

51 Special

Kyle Gilreath 03/09/2013

Missing their leading scorer in Carmelo Anthony, the New York Knicks went to a small line-up Thursday night in their game vs the Oklahome City Thunder. Late in the 2nd Half the Knicks ran this pick & roll action to force the defense to sink in to guard the ballscreen action which opened up some shooters on the perimeter. See More

Basketball Play - 1 high Slip into roll/replace

1 high Slip into roll/replace

Kyle Brown 03/07/2013

An action I saw a lot this past weekend. Slipping the 4 man (Someone who is a good shooter) and then he becomes the replace guy on the big roll is a tough action for the defense to guard because it forces the guy guarding 5 to really defend the ball screen well. Marquette ran this action and slipped the 5 man for a layup. See More

Basketball Play - Melo-Iso

Melo-Iso

Kyle Gilreath 02/28/2013

The New York Knicks ran this action this week in their win over the Golden State Warriors. This play was designed as an iso for Carmelo Anthony but with the defense focusing on the 1-on-1 action the Knicks players do a tremendous job cutting to open areas on the floor. See More

Basketball Play - Stagger - Backdoor

Stagger - Backdoor

Kyle Gilreath 02/22/2013

Thursday night in a heated PAC-12 battle California's Mike Montgomery drew up this quick hitting back door action to attack Oregon's overplaying defense. Cal's Junior Guard Allen Crabbe has had one heck of a stretch lately of offensive games so Oregon really started denying the ball; or at least making it hard for him to catch. California came out of a timeout last night to take advantage of such over-aggressive defense. This is a great action to run because you occupy all of your help with the stagger opposite. See More

Basketball Play - BLOB - Double Screen Down

BLOB - Double Screen Down

Basketball HQ 02/22/2013

With this play your 4 has to set a good screen to occupy his defender, and as soon as cuts off his shoulder, 4 has to dive hard to the rim looking for a layup. As you’re working on this play in practice, make sure you work with your 2 on reading the defense to make the proper decision to end up with an open shot. This play is from the 2010-2011 Houston Rockets season. See More
