Basketball Play - Loop Flare

Loop Flare

Kyle Gilreath 03/21/2014

In need of 2 points towards the end of the 2nd half, Arizona State’s Herb Sendek drew up this BLOB play for his Sun Devils. Watching the play develop I was sure they would get the ball to 3 curling into the lane, but they decided to wait and use the flare for 2. The shot was off target but ASU secured the offensive rebound to tie the game with two free-throws. See More

Basketball Play - Side Lob

Side Lob

Kyle Gilreath 07/09/2014

I recently watched some video from last year's Brayden Carr Foundation Coaching Clinic run by coach Jim Carr. This play came from the legendary John Lucas and is a very simple sideline out-of-bounds play from the side that gives you a lob. Main goal of this action is to get the lob to 5 at the rim. However, if the defense takes away the lob you have 4 cutting hard to the top for a catch & shoot as well. See More

Basketball Play - Slip

Slip

Kyle Gilreath 12/23/2014

UCONN's Geno Auriemma demonstrated this play this Summer at Coaching U Live in Las Vegas. This is a simple action that you get the floor moving early in the offense and keeping both bigs involved and creating hard to guard situations. As 3 comes off the pick, if X5 engages the ball and helps, a throwback to 5 may lead to a quick feed to 4. However, if 5 quickly shows and starts to get back, that is opportunity for 4 to come out and flare 5...4 has another opportunity to slip after setting the flare. See More

Basketball Play - Hook Back

Hook Back

Kyle Gilreath 02/18/2015

This past Summer at Coaching U Live in Indianapolis, Florida head coach Billy Donovan shared a play from his Hook series. Below are two options that put the defense in hard-to-guard situations. In Option 1, the backside is cleared out so if X5 does not help on the backscreen, 1 will get a lay-up. IF X5 does help, there will be no help on the pick & roll. Option 2 forces X5 to be late on the pick. IF X5 and X1 switch, lift 1 to the top after screening and roll 5 to the rim for a mis-match inside. See More

Basketball Play - Boomerang Quick

Boomerang Quick

Kyle Gilreath 03/11/2015

The Dallas Mavericks ran this quick hitter in transition last night vs the Cleveland Cavaliers. This boomerang action is excellent to run vs teams that are very good pick & roll defenders. *Boomerangs are actions that quickly change flip back to the same side with an immediate return pass. Basketball Play - Pacer Weave Duck In

Pacer Weave Duck In

Kevin Bruinsma 06/19/2013

The Pacers ran this set in a late clock situation right before the end of the First Half in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals vs the Miami Heat. #21 David West with a textbook example of ducking in, sealing a defender. This play didn't result in a basket as West missed an open lay-up. But the job he does of going along the baseline, then coming back towards the rim sealing they switching defender was tremendous. Basketball Play - Back Tip & Convert

Back Tip & Convert

Kevin Bruinsma 06/28/2013

This is a defensive drill that during my three years at Cleveland State we did a multiple times a week. It incorporates a lot of things and teaches/practices fundamentals while letting the guys get after it and be competetive. The back tip and convert drill allows you to learn how to back tip the ball properly and then transition immediatly into offense so you work on your 2 on 1 breaks. The key to this drill is the back tipper needs to sprint, and tip the ball up with his inside hand. Don't reach, just run the floor and tip the ball. A really great defense to offense drill while teaching a unique skill. See More

Basketball Play - UIC BLOB Screen-Screener

UIC BLOB Screen-Screener

Kevin Bruinsma 01/24/2015

After Depaul hit the 3 to put them ahead over UIC the Flames had a chance to respond for the win. With the ball out of bounds underneath the Depaul basket, UIC took a timeout and diagramed a screen the screener play with 1.8 seconds on the clock. The play got UIC a wide open three from the ball side wing for the win. With such a short clock the Depaul defenders were caught between switching and trailing their own guys. The key to this entire action is the sharp jab step taken towards the rim, and then the screen for the man cutting right to the rim. That put Depaul’s defense in catch-up mode. See More

Basketball Play - Michigan Swing Cut

Michigan Swing Cut

Kevin Bruinsma 01/26/2015

While going thru the game I was really impressed by Michigan’s first offensive play call out of half time, it involved great spacing, driving lanes, and the ball switching sides of the floor. The action forced Detroit to put multiple guys in rotations to protect the rim, guard a handoff, defend the drive, and recover to shooters. See More
