Basketball Play - Hook Back

Hook Back

Kyle Gilreath 02/18/2015

This past Summer at Coaching U Live in Indianapolis, Florida head coach Billy Donovan shared a play from his Hook series. Below are two options that put the defense in hard-to-guard situations. In Option 1, the backside is cleared out so if X5 does not help on the backscreen, 1 will get a lay-up. IF X5 does help, there will be no help on the pick & roll. Option 2 forces X5 to be late on the pick. IF X5 and X1 switch, lift 1 to the top after screening and roll 5 to the rim for a mis-match inside. See More

Basketball Play - Ballscreen Shooting (2)

Ballscreen Shooting (2)

Kyle Gilreath 02/13/2015

Yesterday I shared Part 1 of Ballscreen Shooting which incorporated three different types of screening actions. The technique the throw-behind in Frame 1, is essentially a quick evade dribble. You are trying to throw the ball out in front of you, in an effort to create separation from the hedging defender, while also making it difficult for the initial defender to recover in time before the quick release jumper. Do not allow your players to just go through the motions, set a goal to reach during each set. Example: You MUST go 7-for-10 before moving to the next sequence. See More

Basketball Play - Pick & Roll Shooting Drill

Pick & Roll Shooting Drill

Kyle Gilreath 02/12/2015

This set of pick & roll shooting drills is one of my favorites for player development. There are 189 total moves below to work on different pick & roll coverages and methods of attack at the three most popular angles. In order to keep your workouts efficient and energetic, take just one action and focus on 3-4 moves within that action from all three angles. Do not allow your players to just go through the motions, set a goal to reach during each set. Example: You MUST make 7-10 before moving to the next sequence. See More

Basketball Play - 54 Gap Double

54 Gap Double

Kyle Gilreath 02/12/2015

The UCONN Huskies ran this play in the 2014 National Championship game. As 1 came off the initial pick, X2 picked him forcing the pass to 2. Immediately 4 picks X2 and attacks X4 for a simple 2-man game on the wing. With 5 rolling after the initial pick X5 should be somewhat occupied in the event 2 turns the corner and attacks. To see EVERY play UCONN ran in the 2014 Final Four you can do so in my eBook Championship Execution! See More

Basketball Play - Horns Loop

Horns Loop

Kyle Gilreath 02/09/2015

Saturday night in their ESPN College Gameday game in Gainesville vs Florida, the Kentucky Wildcats run this quick double-backscreen play to start the 2nd half. What made this play so effective was the timing by 3 who hesitated at the top of the key before 5 caught the ball. See More

Basketball Play - Zipper Hook

Zipper Hook

Kyle Gilreath 01/14/2015

The New Orleans Pelicans ran this play several nights ago to get Anthony Davis (5) screened into a spread pick & roll. Most NBA teams run this action with a single (or sometimes double as pictured) weakside pin-down for a catch & shoot at the elbow/slot area. I really like how the Pelicans turned this action into a screen the screener for Davis. The staggers, along with spacing Ryan Anderson (3) wide, caused the coverage on the pick & roll to be late and eliminating any help defenders in the paint for a easy pick & roll dunk. See More

Basketball Play - Elbow Pin Elevator

Elbow Pin Elevator

Kyle Gilreath 01/08/2015

This is another play Billy Donovan ran last night in their victory over South Carolina. While the emphasis of this play is to get 3 a shot via the elevator screen, there is also an inside opportunity as well. By placing Finney-Smith at the 3, this game the Gators a bigger target inside off the initial pin-down action. Furthermore, with so much attention at the FT-line area, this is also a great opportunity for 1 to ball fake and drive baseline to the rim with the only help defender being X2. See More

Basketball Play - Horns Twist Double

Horns Twist Double

Kyle Gilreath 01/08/2015

The Florida Gators ran this Horns action in their Southeastern Conference opening win vs South Carolina. I have seen this play run recently but what I liked about this action was how 4 cleaned up the action at the end with the staggered pick & roll. Spacing 2 and 3 in the corners allows for an open/spaced floor for 5 to sprint to the rim while 1 tries to create. See More

Basketball Play - 45 Hook Twist

45 Hook Twist

Kyle Gilreath 12/25/2014

During Christmas Day action, the Washington Wizards ran this excellent twist pick & roll action that freed up Wall for an easy mid-range jumper. Having two shooters spaced in each corner opened up the middle alley and allowed Wall & company to run this play very efficiently. See More

Basketball Play - Slip

Slip

Kyle Gilreath 12/23/2014

UCONN's Geno Auriemma demonstrated this play this Summer at Coaching U Live in Las Vegas. This is a simple action that you get the floor moving early in the offense and keeping both bigs involved and creating hard to guard situations. As 3 comes off the pick, if X5 engages the ball and helps, a throwback to 5 may lead to a quick feed to 4. However, if 5 quickly shows and starts to get back, that is opportunity for 4 to come out and flare 5...4 has another opportunity to slip after setting the flare. See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Again

Rhody Again

Kyle Gilreath 12/17/2014

Tom Izzo's Spartans ran this play Sunday night in their game vs Oakland. What I love about this plays is that there is a scoring option for all five players within the sequence. Options: 2 is able to curl and get into the lane on the initial catch Hand-off to 1 for a lay-up Catch & shoot for 3 (OR pass to 5 if he slips to the rim and X5 over-helps) Throwback to 4 for a shot Throwback to 4 for a post feed to 5 See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Elevator

Rhody Elevator

Kyle Gilreath 12/03/2014

This Rhody option is one to run as a quick hitter in a Need 3 situation. Once again it is essential that 2 cuts shoulder to shoulder off the screens from 5 and 4 to encourage X5 and X4 to become occupied with the cut that they do not see the elevator action coming. Furthermore, if X5 sniffs out the play and tries to deny the pass to 3, slip 5 to the rim for a lay-up (If you don't need a 3 pointer). See More

Basketball Play - Zipper Weak 23

Zipper Weak 23

Kyle Gilreath 11/25/2014

Thursday night in their win over the Miami Heat, the Chicago Bulls ran this pick & roll play for Luol Deng to start the game. As 3 comes off the pick, 1 relocates to the corner as 4 and 5 space outside the lane. If the defense shifts to take away the drive, look to fire a pass to 1 in the corner and have your bigs screen in on the defense. See More

Basketball Play - Hawk 42

Hawk 42

Kyle Gilreath 11/01/2014

Last night during LeBron James' homecoming, the Cleveland Cavaliers ran this action to start off their game vs the Knicks to kick off the 2014-15 season. Running LeBron to the weak side put more attention on the pin-down for 5 (Varejao) as the Knicks thought the action would be going to James' side of the floor. However, the Cavs sneaked in 4 (Love) behind the rim off a cross screen and was able to seal his defender for an easy catch and score. See More
