Basketball Play - Double HI Ballscreen

Double HI Ballscreen

Gibson Pyper 03/20/2015

Belmont runs good action out of their transition attacking. Typically using a Drag screen to free up the PG. In this set, the PG looks to come off a Drag screen and kick to the wing. On the kick both 4 & 5 set a Double HI Ballscreen and look to slip it and 1/3 space on the wing in corner. Because Belmont has almost all shooter on the floor, it results in a lot of space to attack from. See More

Basketball Play - UAB BLOB Elevator Box

UAB BLOB Elevator Box

Wes Kosel 03/20/2015

UPSET ALERT: Coach Haase called this BLOB play in the closing minutes of the game against Iowa State. The shooter starts at the opposite block and sets an up-screen to start the play. After setting the up-screen, 2 slips in between the elevator screen from 4 and 5. 1 makes the entry pass to 2 for an open 3-point shot on the wing. See More

Basketball Play - BYU Quick Flare

BYU Quick Flare

Craig LeVasseur 03/18/2015

BYU ran this misdirection play against Ole Miss in the NCAA First Round. It starts with a stagger screen for the 1 man, a dangerous shooter. While this happens, 2 sets a token ballscreen for the ballhandler and immediately slips the screen. The 1 man curls the stagger and clears while the 5 man turns back and sets a flare screen for the 2 after he slipped the ballscreen. A great defensive effort by x2 prevented a 3 point shot here, but the 2 man still made a quick read and drove baseline to the basket for a foul. See More

Basketball Play - Wofford Terriers Zipper Post Options

Wofford Terriers Zipper Post Options

Wes Kosel 03/17/2015

Here are two plays from Wofford Terriers head coach Mike Young. The Terriers are back in the NCAA Tournament for the 2nd straight year and for the 4th time in the past 6 seasons. In these plays, the Terriers use the point guard to set a down screen for 5. 5 makes the zipper cut up the lane line looking for the ball at the elbow or slightly extended. The small on big down screen makes it hard for the defense to defend the zipper cut into the hand-off actions. If the defense switches, the post defender is now guarding a smaller player on a hand-off (when he is used to guarding the post player). Zipper Post #1: In the first option, 2 passes to 5 at the elbow and 1 loops around 5 looking for a hand-off. If 1 cannot turn the corner, he has 4 coming off of a down screen on the weak side or 2 slipping to the basket. Zipper Post #2:In the second option, it starts just like the first play with 1 setting the screen for 5 and 5 cutting up to get the ball at the elbow. Instead of 1 cutting around 5 for hand-off. This time 3 moves in from the wing to loop around 5. Once 3 has the ball, he has the same scoring and passing options as 1 did in the first play. See More

Basketball Play - Line Back

Line Back

Kyle Gilreath 03/11/2015

Last night with 2.7 seconds on the shot clock, the Dallas Mavericks ran this baseline out-of-bounds play vs the Cleveland Cavaliers. While the resulting shot wasn’t great, I really love this action. The secondary screening action on the back side open up two several scoring options while pulling the defense away from the rim with the main action. 3 has a look has a look if the defense gets caught and 4 and slip back to the ball after screening for a lay-up. Basketball Play - Motion Breakdowns - 2/2 With A Coach

Motion Breakdowns - 2/2 With A Coach

Randy Sherman 03/10/2015

First completely "live" drill in motion offense teaching progressions. Once you have installed the four cuts, downscreens, shallow cuts and flare screens put the motion offense fundamentals to the test with this live drill. Coach is the passer. Player beginning the drill in the high elbow is the screener throughout the possession. Correct poor timing and incorrect reads immediately. At any time during the possession a player can pass to coach and the two offensive players set screening action. Empasize the second cutter concept. Coach can pass to screener or cutter off downscreens or flare screens. Coach can force rescreens by not passing to the action. Drill is run on one side of the floor at a time. Drill consists of action off of downscreens, flares, slips, rescreens, cuts. No excessive dribbling ball screens. Coach is always open! Use them and score with action. Put your roster in pairs with one screener and one cutter and play for 8:00 (4:00 on each side of the floor) You come into the drill on defense with your partner. To get to offense, you have to get a stop, rebound and outlet to coach. Rotate from defense to offense. If you score you stay and new pair comes in on defense. The drill begins with pass from high elbow (1) to coach. Emphasize basket cut into the downscreen. Variations/Restrictions: Instead of passing to coach, start with a shallow cut. Pass to coach, make a deep basket cut, wing fills the high elbow setting up flare screen. Only a second cutter (screener) can score. See More

Basketball Play - BULLS ELEVATOR

BULLS ELEVATOR

Jens Hakanowitz 02/18/2015

The Chicago Bulls used this BLOB during the 2014/2015 NBA season. A simple back screen gives the screener an option to use an elevator effectively afterwards. If X1 bumps on the basket cut, than 1 will have a clear path through the elevator. If X1 and X2 decide to switch the back screen, than 1 fakes setting the screen and slips through the elevator earlier. See More

Basketball Play - Motion Breakdowns 2/0 Shallow Cut Flare Drill

Motion Breakdowns 2/0 Shallow Cut Flare Drill

Randy Sherman 02/16/2015

Introduce flare screens by using a shallow cut. Line of players with a ball at the slot (screeners), Line of players at wing (cutters). Coach begins the drill with a ball as well. Work the drill on both sides of the court! Shallow Cut Tips: When dribbled at, the wing (player 2) back cuts towards the post then loops to the slot replacing player 1 Cut hard, hold for a count in the post, then sprint to slot Flare Screen Tips: Cutter: Quick basket cut then come off the flare screen Screener: Call the screen! ("Joey! Joey! Flare! Flare!") Screener: Jumpstop into the screen, screener's back should be pointing towards corner of the court, Hold the screen then slip to basket, call "slip! slip!" See More

Basketball Play - YSU Horns Options

YSU Horns Options

Kevin Bruinsma 02/03/2015

When playing Cleveland State you have to find ways to counter their pressue and make it as difficult as possible for them to successfully trap you. They trap all ball screens so running a horns set is one of the most difficult ways for them to do that successfully. Trailing at the half at our place we started the second half running three different variations of horns on our first three possessions. We scored on all 3. With them trapping the ball screen it makes it crucial the opposite post defender sinks in the hole or there is a strong blitz from the corner/wing defender. You can see in the first clip how even though our PG #11 DJ Cole got trapped as soon as he got the ball to our 4 man #4 Shawn Amiker he had a clear driving lane to the basket. The second clip shows us going off the 4 man, their 5 didn't sink far enough and we got an And 1. The third & final clip shows a pass entry that brought us to a back screen and down screen action on the side of the floor. With them pressuring the ball our 5 man #20 Bobby Hain created space off the bounce and hit the slipping 4 man for a lay-up. See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Again

Rhody Again

Kyle Gilreath 12/17/2014

Tom Izzo's Spartans ran this play Sunday night in their game vs Oakland. What I love about this plays is that there is a scoring option for all five players within the sequence. Options: 2 is able to curl and get into the lane on the initial catch Hand-off to 1 for a lay-up Catch & shoot for 3 (OR pass to 5 if he slips to the rim and X5 over-helps) Throwback to 4 for a shot Throwback to 4 for a post feed to 5 See More

Basketball Play - Rhody Elevator

Rhody Elevator

Kyle Gilreath 12/03/2014

This Rhody option is one to run as a quick hitter in a Need 3 situation. Once again it is essential that 2 cuts shoulder to shoulder off the screens from 5 and 4 to encourage X5 and X4 to become occupied with the cut that they do not see the elevator action coming. Furthermore, if X5 sniffs out the play and tries to deny the pass to 3, slip 5 to the rim for a lay-up (If you don't need a 3 pointer). See More

Tiger Post

Randy Brown 05/16/2014

Great set play for an easy basket by post player. Wings pin down for posts to enter to 4. Ball reversed to 1 and then to 5 on left wing. 1-4 set double screen for 2. On 2's catch, 1 seals in 4's defender as 4 slips under screen to catch and score. See More

52 Hook Pop

Kyle Gilreath 05/05/2014

In Game 7 of the 2014 NBA Playoffs, the Toronto Raptors ran this action for a screen the screener pick & roll. Depending on defensive coverages, this play opens up multiple scoring options for your team. In this play, X4 showed as 4 slipped making the throwback to 4 at the top of the key the available option.
