Every coach needs to know how to defend these plays we call "america's plays" because it seems everyone runs variations of these plays. These actions include cross screens, stagger screens, and back screens. Coaches can instruct defense on how to defend these actions See More

Basketball Play - 42 Double

42 Double

Kyle Gilreath 10/25/2013

When playing good defensive teams, it can require simultaneous actions to occupy the help and open up more scoring opportunities. The play below gives you several scoring plays to counter any defensive rotations. 1. Screening 4 into the pick & roll with 2 can cause X4 to be late and give 2 a mid-range jumper. 2. If X4 and X2 to caught guarding 2, 4 will be open on the pop/roll as the rest of the help defense is occupied in the weak side screening action. 3. If the defense falls sleep or focuses more on the side pick & roll 3 may be open for the lob. See More

Basketball Play - Triangle Down

Triangle Down

Kyle Gilreath 10/24/2013

The Miami Heat ran this action versus the Pelicans Wednesday night to get Chris Anderson an easy dunk at the rim. As 1 was screening for 3, the defense became very oppupied with defending Wade (not seeing the ball). Furthermore, X2 and X5 did not communicate and both ended up on 2, leaving 5 wide open rolling to the rim with no helpside. See More

Basketball Play - America's Play Reverse

America's Play Reverse

Kyle Gilreath 10/23/2013

While the head coach of the New Jersey Nets, Lawrence Frank ran this sideline out of bounds play at the end of a game in a Need 3 situation. Most of us are aware of the box screen the screener (stagger) that is referred to as America's play because everyone in American runs it. Well this action is a small tweak to the play in the event the defense tries to switch the 2-3 screen, this forces X2 and X3 to trail in both situations. See More

Basketball Play - 8-2

8-2

Daniel Murphy 10/19/2013

Use whatever defensive principles and offensive principles you teach. The defense can trap or play straight up. On a change of possession the offense goes to the last zone and each defensive team moves forward a zone with the first defensive team becoming to the new offense. Run this drill for 4-8 minutes and keep score. See More

Basketball Play - New Jersey Nets Transition

New Jersey Nets Transition

Daniel Murphy 10/18/2013

One of my favorite transition drills. Got this from Coach Bob Hurley Sr. who I believe got it from the NJ Nets-hence the name NJ nets transition. I like to use of shot clock to keep the offense aggressive. 6-7 seconds for the first trip and add a second or two each time so when it's 5-4 there are around 12 seconds to attack. If you really need to condition a player always have them shoot the FT or start on the court as defense. Keep score however you would like. 2's and 3's or points for O and D boards. Run for 6-8 minutes or 15 if you really need to condition. See More

Basketball Play - Elbow 125

Elbow 125

Kyle Gilreath 10/18/2013

Phil Jackson ran this play during his latter years with the LA Lakers. The initial action gives you 2 quick options with 1 popping back and 2 getting screened out. If the defense takes away both options 1 should look to turn and set a second screen for 3. See More

Basketball Play - High Post Entry with Fake Hand Off / Backdoor

High Post Entry with Fake Hand Off / Backdoor

Basketball HQ 10/16/2013

This play is from the 2010-2011 Houston Rockets season. This play is best for teams with a passing big. You are running this play for your best shooter or scorer and your point guard. You will need to drill with your players on how to come off a hand off, and how to have your bigs read the defense to make the fake hand off. This is a great action for teams with a point guard that will be over played on the hand off. See More

Basketball Play - Finland Post 78

Finland Post 78

Dana Beszczynski 10/02/2013

Henrik Dettman was serving his second stint as Team Finland Head Coach and his team beat Greece, Russia and Turkey at this year's European Championship in Slovenia. Finland ran this to isolate their naturalized American Lee in the post and with a play ending backscreen, if the defense looks to double, the man is open on the weak side for a wide open lay-up See More

Basketball Play - Twirl Up

Twirl Up

Dana Beszczynski 10/01/2013

This is a set play we used with success in our first season. It has multiple scoring options and a lot of movement. If the timing is good, the defense has to make split second decisions which can lead to easy points either on the paint or on the perimeter. See More
