Basketball Play - UAB Option Double

UAB Option Double

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

In this play by UAB, the Blazers send the 3 down underneath the basket where he then has the option to cut off of a staggered screen or single screen. Early in the game, UAB has been utilizing the single option. Once 3 gets to the wing, 1 and 2 clear out to the perimeter and 4 and 5 move up to set a staggered ball-screen for 3. The play has been blown up by Iowa State so they haven't gotten all the way through to the ball-screen, but it is a solid action that will force the Cyclones to defend UAB's quick guards. See More

Basketball Play - Texas ATO Swing

Texas ATO Swing

Wes Kosel 03/19/2015

Texas used this play after a time-out in the first half. I'm always a fan of having multiple scoring options in a play, and Rick Barnes does a great job giving his team several looks at good shots in this one. The play starts with a ball reversal (1 swinging the ball to to 4 to 3). The play gets open looks off of a down screen, back-screen, and ball-screen. Texas should come back to this play and look for the lob on the back-screen with their long wings. See More

Basketball Play - UCCS Zone Lob

UCCS Zone Lob

Wes Kosel 03/26/2015

Here is a zone lob play used by head coach Jeff Culver at UCCS (University of Colorado-Colorado Springs). The UCCS Mountain Lions had an incredible season going 27-6 and winning the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Championship over Metro State. This play was used to get Derrick White (25.8 ppg) a dunk against a 2-3 zone defense. The play starts with the ball moving to the wing and back to the point guard. With White on the wing, a back-screen is set as he sneaks in behind the defense for a lob and a dunk. See More

Basketball Play - Louisville Lob to Stagger

Louisville Lob to Stagger

Wes Kosel 03/29/2015

Here is a lob option used by Rick Pitino and his Louisville Cardinals. The play uses a lot of side-to-side action getting the defense to chase cutters around the floor. The play starts with all 5 players above the free-throw line. The point guard passes to 4 then cuts to the basket off of a back-screen from 5. If the quick lob isn't there, 2 cuts across the floor weaving between screens from 5 and 4. Once 2 gets the ball, he gets a staggered ball-screen from the bigs. Multiple scoring options in this play make it difficult for teams to guard. See More

Duke used this play against Gonzaga to open the game and get the ball inside to Okafor. Once Okafor got the ball, two Zags double-teamed leaving Winslow wide open on the wing for a 3-point shot. The play starts with Tyus Jones giving a "thumbs down" signal and a down-screen set for 4 in the corner. 4 curls the screen and sets a cross-screen for Okafor. Basketball Play - Duke Zone Hi/Lo Runner

Duke Zone Hi/Lo Runner

Wes Kosel 04/02/2015

Coach K called this play in the second half of the game against Robert Morris. The play sends the point guard running across the baseline to the opposite corner against the zone. Both post players inside look for opportunities to seal their defenders. Once the ball gets inside to 4, he looks to shoot, pass out for a 3-point shot, or pass down to 5 cutting to the basket. Basketball Play - Arizona 1-4 High Clear Lob

Arizona 1-4 High Clear Lob

Wes Kosel 04/07/2015

Here is a 1-4 high play that Arizona liked to use early in the games this season. The play creates an overload on the left side of the floor to open up a quick lob for the point guard. If the lob isn't open, multiple ball-screens and hand-offs are executed to create scoring options. Arizona used this play a lot towards the end of the season, especially in the Pac-12 and NCAA Tournaments. See More

Shocker Stagger

Wes Kosel 04/08/2015

Here is a multiple stagger set play from Wichita State. The play starts with an entry pass to the wing and a back-screen for the point guard. As the point cuts into the lane, 4 moves to the ball-side block looking for the post up. The first staggered screen is then set getting the shooting guard the ball at the top of the key. Wichita State Stack to Stagger

Wes Kosel 04/08/2015

This play starts with a pass to the left wing and a UCLA cut from the point guard to the ball-side block. If your point guard can post up, this is an easy look inside. If not, the ball can be reversed creating a situation for a cross-screen/stagger-screen action sending 3 to the basket and 1 to the top of the key for a shot. See More

Basketball Play - Reno Big Horns SLOB Scissor

Reno Big Horns SLOB Scissor

Wes Kosel 04/08/2015

In this SLOB from Coach David Arseneault Jr., the Big Horns start with an interchange of 4 and 3 to the blocks and 1 cutting up alone to the top of the key to get the ball. 1 then takes the ball to the opposite side of the floor sending 2 on a cross-screen at the free-throw line to the left wing and 3 to the right corner away from the action. If 2 isn't open, 1 gets a ball-screen from 4 who sprints to the ball-screen off of a down-screen from 5. The action at the top of the key opens up pick & roll as well as a duck-in for 5 inside. Basketball Play - Duke High Overload PNR

Duke High Overload PNR

Wes Kosel 04/10/2015

In this play, Tyus Jones attacks from left to right off of a high ball-screen with an overload on the left side of the floor. The open space puts even more pressure on Kaminsky to stop the penetration and guard the roll. Jones came off of the ball-screen as if he was going to attack the rim, but instead pulled up at the elbow using Koenig's momentum against him. See More
