Basketball Play - Double High vs. 2-3 Zone

Double High vs. 2-3 Zone

Kevin Noon 12/31/2014

This play can be used a quick hitter against the zone, in transtion or as a primary entry to a 4-out/1-in zone offense. It is great to get the ball in the lane and collapse the defense. The main job of the two big men is to set a solid screen, especially the second screener. The main role of the driving guard is to draw the help defense. 1 picks a side of the court to take the ball. 4 & 5 screen the two top guards. As 1 comes off screen, he hits 2. 2 catches the ball, rips and drives looking to draw x4 and have x5 step up. 4 pops and spaces, 5 rolls looking to draw x2 and x5. If 2 draws x4 then 3 will be open in the corner. If 2 draws x5 then 5 will be open for the dump off. If 2 draws x4 and x5 and then x3 will be forced to cover 5, then 4 will be open for the skip. Basketball Play - Thumb Series

Thumb Series

Craig LeVasseur 12/09/2014

This is one of my favorite sets from the 13-14 season, and is a staple of the Trailblazers' offense. Very similar to Rick Carlisle's "Get" series from the championship Mavericks team, this set creates multiple scoring looks for each of the Blazers' offensive weapons, and can be modified to highlight any player within the offense. Below are 3 options within the set: Thumb Up, Thumb Fist, and Thumb Punch. Thumb Up creates catch & shoot opportunities for Matthews and Batum, Thumb Fist puts Aldridge and Lillard in a pick and pop situation, and Thumb Punch creates a post scoring opportunity for Aldridge. Basketball Play - Ole Miss Curl Roll-Replace

Ole Miss Curl Roll-Replace

Craig LeVasseur 03/18/2015

Ole Miss ran this action in the first half of their First Round NCAA game against BYU. The pindown/catch and shoot action in this play is a decoy for the 5 to create seperation from his defender to set a high ballscreen. As 5's defender is late and can only Zone the ballscreen rather than Showing, the replace action by the 4 leaves 4's defender as the only option to bump the 5 when he rolls out of the screen. Depending on how the defense reacts, there are a number of different scoring options here for the 1, 4, and 5. In this game, Ole Miss PG Summers attacked the paint, drew the defense in, and dumped the ball off to the 5 for a foul at the basket. See More

Basketball Play - BYU 1-3-1 Quick Hitter

BYU 1-3-1 Quick Hitter

Craig LeVasseur 03/18/2015

Here is a quick hitter that BYU used in their NCAA First Round matchup with Ole Miss to get an easy midrange jumper for Haws, one of their best shooters. Against a 2-guard front, the Ole Miss 1-3-1 zone mimics a 2-3 zone. Here the 4 man passes and cuts hard to the block off of the screen from the 5 man. This forces x5 to pick up the cut to the post. The 5 man turns and sets a quick downscreen for the 1, who flashes to the free throw line. This quick action creates confusion between x4 and x2 and results in an easy look for a great shooter. Basketball Play - BYU Quick Flare

BYU Quick Flare

Craig LeVasseur 03/18/2015

BYU ran this misdirection play against Ole Miss in the NCAA First Round. It starts with a stagger screen for the 1 man, a dangerous shooter. While this happens, 2 sets a token ballscreen for the ballhandler and immediately slips the screen. The 1 man curls the stagger and clears while the 5 man turns back and sets a flare screen for the 2 after he slipped the ballscreen. A great defensive effort by x2 prevented a 3 point shot here, but the 2 man still made a quick read and drove baseline to the basket for a foul. See More

Basketball Play - Robert Morris Hawk Double

Robert Morris Hawk Double

Craig LeVasseur 03/19/2015

Robert Morris used this play in the second half against North Florida in NCAA First Four action. This is a common NBA hawk set sometimes known as 351. The 3 man's defender has all of the work here, as he must commit to helping on the hawk screen just enough to force a difficult Show on the side p/r, and then must recover back to the pick and pop. In this game, UNF was aware of the play and x2 cheated off of his man to rotate to the 3 man on the pick and pop. Lucky Jones was still able to get the defender off his feet, however, and drew a 3 shot foul. See More

Basketball Play - Thru Duck In

Thru Duck In

Craig LeVasseur 03/20/2015

In their NCAA matchup with Notre Dame, Northeastern displayed a wonderful motion offense with great movement, multiple ballscreens, and very active bigs. In this play, they set up their motion with a thru cut by the 1, and the result is a duck-in opportunity for the 5 man. Northeastern was able to draw a foul in the post here and put Notre Dame in foul trouble early. See More

Basketball Play - L.A. Clippers 4 Pop

L.A. Clippers 4 Pop

Craig LeVasseur 04/16/2015

Another set out of the Mike D’Antoni playbook, 4 Pop is designed for a shooting 4. While Blake Griffin has improved his midrange jumper each year, the main advantage of this set is putting Blake 1 on 1 against his usually slower defender at the top of the key. His driving ability makes this play an ideal Slice counter for the Clippers, and an option that the Celtics likely would not have been able to utilize with KG. A clear side P/R with Blake and CP3 is also a great 2nd option to have. See More

Basketball Play - Clippers Zipper L ATO

Clippers Zipper L ATO

Craig LeVasseur 04/29/2015

The Clippers used this ATO play in Game 5 against the Spurs, down 3 with 30 seconds left in the game. Chris Paul receives an L ballscreen from the Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, and the play is set up by Paul using the screen from Jordan. Jordan rolls hard off of the screen, and the spread alignment forces x4, Duncan, to bump the roll from Jordan and avoid the lob. Paul quickly throws back to Griffin, who swings and follows for a Side P/R with Jamal Crawford. There is no way Duncan can Show against the ballscreen after having to bump Jordan in the paint, and this forces a difficult rotation for the Spurs to contain the roll by Griffin. See More

Basketball Play - Memphis Grizzlies Fist 2 vs. Ice

Memphis Grizzlies Fist 2 vs. Ice

Craig LeVasseur 05/06/2015

Memphis ran this action in Game 2 against Golden State. The "Fist 2" set is a staple of the Chicago Bulls offense using Derrick Rose, and the Grizzlies used it well here against the Warriors, who "Ice" against the Side P/R. The 5 man screens against the Ice, and the 2 man drives hard to occupy x5 on the help. This set works best with a 5 man who can short roll or pop into the pocket created by the Ice, and having a great duck-in 4 man like Zach Randolph to occupy the weakside help works even better! Basketball Play - 1-4 Quick Hitter (Zone 1 or 2)

1-4 Quick Hitter (Zone 1 or 2)

Adam Barnes 12/21/2015

If you are looking for a play to get you an open 3-point field goal, this play, if ran correctly, should get you a great look at the basket (with rebounders in place to keep the possession alive). As the PG passes to the 4, we like the 3 to "play with" the corner defender, try to occupy his attention as much as possible, so we can get the top ball-side defender to pick up the ball off the initial pass. After passing the ball, the PG will flash like he is making a ball-side corner cut (which is a great way to get a quick entry into the post) but instead, will fill the opposite corner. The help defender on the top will naturally sink and fall towards the mid-line. Once the PG has cleared the lane, we want our 3 to cut to the top of the key. As he is cutting, we would like to have the 5 roll over and set a screen on x1. This is all about timing! If the 3 can catch the ball right as the 5 is setting the screen, we are in business. Now, we have the defense right where we want them. As the 3 catches, he immediately attacks DOWNHILL! Do not let the 3 float/dribble outside of the lane. The goal is to get x5 to step up or x4 to step in. Either way, we have the numbers in our favor. Now, we have the options we want. If the x4 steps up, the 3 immediately needs to pass the ball (what we call a hot read) to either the 1 or the 2. If x4 stays low and x5 defends the penetration (which is what we ultimately want), the 3 needs to pass the ball to the 2. If x4 closes out hard on the 2 and he cannot get the shot, then the 2 needs to make the extra pass to the 1 in the corner (where there is no defense). The 4 and the 5 need to crash hard for the rebound. The 3 should be in position in case the shot attempt is short. See More
