Play Initiates with a dribble handoff between the 1 and 3, a weak side down screen is set between the 4 and 2. The Spurs were very effective with this SLOB against the Heat. Lamarcus Aldrige was playing the 4 spot in this lineup, Danny Green was at the 2, Gasol at the 5, Patty Mills at the 1, and Kyle Anderson took the ball out as the 3. Your best shooter is opposite of where the ball is being inbounded. Your best ball handler or decision maker comes off the pindown. Your most skilled big sets the ball screen and pop. The big does not want to roll in this situation (unless the defense switches little on big) to enable the spacing that the guard needs to get down hill to make a decision to score. See More

"1-Up Pop" is a counter play, off of the basic "1-Up" action. The weak side is cleared out, and the point guard is reading a back screen. The hope is that the lob will be available. If not, the back screener will out cut, and could have a shot. If the defense switches, then there is a high/low look. See More

The "STS Zipper Flip" should be run to soften up the defensive ball screen coverage. It puts the post player in a scramble to defend the ball screen. When the screener "flips the screen," the guard is suddenly attacking down hill, with no post defender to show on the screen. See More

"Iverson STS Flare" is one of my favorite ball screen sets, due to the multiple actions that occur around the ball screen. The Iverson Cut initiates the set, which is followed by a screen-the-ballscreener action. To really challenge the defense, there is a weak side flare screen, and a back screen for the ball screener. "Horns Double" is another wrinkle off of the basic "Horns Action." The set creates multiple actions, behind the ball screen. With the post player defending the ball screen, the help is eliminated on the weak side double stagger screen. If the defense recovers, the play ends with a Flare screen for the 4. This set requires the defense to have perfect switches and/or a perfect scramble rotation. As we see, throughout the history of basketball, great offense has an advantage over great defense. This set creates those advantages. See More

"Horns Flare" is a wrinkle off of the basic "Horns Action," It has two major benefits. The first is that it puts the big, who is in the middle of defending a ball screen action, into a tough defensive scramble. If read properly, this will create a big offensive advantage. It also occupies both bigs, away from the basket, which opens the lane for an aggressive drive from the guard. See More
