The play starts with the point guard dribbling to the right as if he is going to use the ball-screen from 4. The Kansas Jayhawks used this play to start the game against New Mexico State's zone defense. The play starts with the Jayhawks in an overload on the right side of the floor. Mason (1) passes to Seldon (3) away from the overload. Ellis (4) moves towards Seldon as if he is going to set a screen. Instead, Seldon passes back to Mason and Lucas (5) screens the middle man of the zone. Ellis curls around the screen and gets the pass from Mason for a lay-up. See More

In the spirit of March Madness, let's take a trip back in time to 1998 when Bryce Drew hit the game winning shot over Ole Miss. The play starts with 2.5 seconds left on the clock and Valpo down by 2 points. Homer Drew draws up a brilliant last-second play throwing the ball the length of the court to his 4 man. While in the air, Bill Jenkins made the pass to Bryce Drew on the wing. Bryce Drew hit the shot sending Valpo on their Cinderella run to the Sweet 16. The Crusaders were a #13 seed defeating #4 seed Ole Miss. Valpo will open the tournament against Maryland today. Bryce is now the head coach of the Crusaders. Just for kicks, I threw in a counter option with the inbounder running the baseline. See More

In their NCAA matchup with Notre Dame, Northeastern displayed a wonderful motion offense with great movement, multiple ballscreens, and very active bigs. In this play, they set up their motion with a thru cut by the 1, and the result is a duck-in opportunity for the 5 man. Northeastern was able to draw a foul in the post here and put Notre Dame in foul trouble early. See More

Georgetown ran this 4 around 1 set throughout their Round 2 matchup with Eastern Washington. The Hoyas used several different variations of the set utilizing the similar setup but unpredictable result. The action pictured is the base set. Dribble handoffs, double screens, flare screens, and back screens were all used out of this based set. Georgetown uses a 4 out 1 in look almost every possession and can run this set with interchangeable perimeter players. See More

NC State used this BLOB play in the second half against LSU. The play is meant to get a 3-point shot by running 2 off of a double screen at the free-throw line. However, NC State makes a good read and the point guard takes his man to the basket after 3 clears to the opposite side of the floor. 1 drives to the basket and forces LSU to foul on the penetration. Stephen F. Austin ran this BLOB set against Utah late in the 2nd half of their Round 2 matchup. The Lumberjacks were within striking distance of the Utes and needed quality scoring opportunities. This play worked to perfection but the open 3 didn't fall. This multiple action set utilizes misdirection for the shooter followed by a stagger. SFA had no trouble completing the handoff or getting the open 3 they were looking for. See More

Arkansas runs a very basic pass and screen away attack from their 4-out transition alignment. They keep things very basic in the half court as their primary goal is to shoot and score quickly with their Fastest 40 attack. Often the trailing post downscreens for wings sprinting to the baseline. When a player passes, he screens away or basket cuts. The Hogs stay in four-out and pass, screen away and/or cut. See More

NC State used this play early in the 1st half to get an open shot for Trevor Lacey. The play starts with an entry pass to the wing and a UCLA cut from 1 to the low post. Once 3 (Lacey) gets the ball at the top of the key, he has the option to pass to 1 for a shot or to pass to 4 flashing to the pinch post. If Lacey passes to 4, he loops around him at the elbow looking for a hand-off and a shot. See More

LSU used this play in the first half against NC State. On the sideline, LSU lines up with Hornsby in the corner (3). 1 passes the ball into 4 then 4 dribbles across the floor and passes back to 1. Hornsby then sets a cross-screen for 5. 4 sets a down screen for Hornsby who cuts up to the top of the key for a 3-point shot. It looks like LSU needs to keep finding Hornsby to stay in this game. Stephen F. Austin ran this early offense almost exclusively in the first half of their Round 2 matchup with Utah. Utah switched all screens which caused issues for the Lumberjacks but they were still able to get quality shots. This early offense uses flex concepts to clear one side of the floor for a dribble handoff. Stephen F. Austin utilizes a 5 that can attack the rim off the dribble to allow for multiple options out of the set. See More

Purdue runs a nice BLOB vs 2-3 zone. The initial action is not what gets a layup, its the combination of all 5 players moving at the same time. The keys to this set is 3 slipping into the middle of the zone after inbounding the ball and at the same time 5 slips his screen to look for the ball, with two wing players distracting the wing defenders, this action forces the zone to guard either the wings who can shoot it or the bigs inside.
