Basketball Play - Thad Boyle Elbow Stagger / Mid Ball Screen

Thad Boyle Elbow Stagger / Mid Ball Screen

Dana Beszczynski 01/12/2014

This is a nice play run by Thad Boyle and the Buffs of Colorado The Buffs have a very talented PG in Spencer Dinwiddie who with his size and athletic ability can really breakdown a defense The use of the UCLA screen to set-up the double stagger is well executed and what makes this play well designed is the end when no shot is available, as it runs right into a SPNR with an open floor for Dinwiddie to breakdown the defense or read and make the kick-out pass See More

Basketball Play - Hoosier Down

Hoosier Down

Randy Brown 02/10/2014

This is a good down screen/flex action followed by an on ball screen. Options are 4 coming off 5's down screen, 3's flex cut, and 1's penetration off ball screen. Three scoring options are available on 1's penetration; 1 drives to basket, dishes to 5, or dishes to 3 for shot. See More

Basketball Play - 3 Shots at 3 Spots

3 Shots at 3 Spots

Kyle Gilreath 12/30/2013

This past week while in Louisville for the King of the Bluegrass we were fortunate to watch NCAA Division 2 powerhouse Bellarmine University practice before taking off a few days for Christmas. Their practice was very impressive. The amount of energy and communication throughout the entire practice is exactly what our team needed to witness. This shooting drill is one they opened up practice with and allowed to get up a ton of shots in a short amount of period. The drill incorporates the 3 main spots on the floor (top of key and each corner) and 3 different shots at each spot. The line under the rim passes to the "spot" and then closes out to the ball, the player receives the pass and shot fakes before making a 1 or 2 dribble attack before passing to the 3rd spot. After passing (or shooting) follow your pass (shot) to the next line so each player performs each shot type at all 3 spots. I believe the goal of the drill was to score somewhere around 155 points; 3pt=3, 15 ft=2, lay-ups=1. Below are the shots that each player must perform at each spot: Corner 1 3 pointer Catch & rip 15 footer Catch & rip and finish at the rim/floater Top of the Key 3 pointer Catch & rip step-back 15 footer Catch & rip finish at the rim with a power lay-up / up and under Corner 2 3 pointer Catch & rip 15 footer Catch & rip and finish at the rim/floater Special thank you to Scott Davenport for allowing us to watch his practice. Basketball Play - NBA Play of the Day May 24: San Antonio Spurs Hook Out

NBA Play of the Day May 24: San Antonio Spurs Hook Out

Kyle Gilreath 05/22/2013

Last night in their exciting Game 2 matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, the San Antonio Spurs ran this pick & pop action to open up the floor with several options to score. As I have preached quite a bit recently, I love screening bigs into pick & rolls. What makes this play so special is that it allowed Duncan to pop to the elbow for one of his go-to shots. Additionally, the Spurs screened in for hot shooting Danny Green for a possible look from the deep corner. Not only did this screen for Green give them another scoring option, but it took some of the help out of the paint in the even Parker turned the corner to get to the rim. See More

Bill Self ran this SLOB play for Ben McLemore last year with the Kansas Jayhawks. When teams blanketed McLemore on the perimeter, this was a good option for him to slip to the rim while the weak side help is drawn away by a downscreen. McLemore (2) is the inbounder on this play. See More

Basketball Play - High Post Entry with Fake Hand Off / Backdoor

High Post Entry with Fake Hand Off / Backdoor

Basketball HQ 10/16/2013

This play is from the 2010-2011 Houston Rockets season. This play is best for teams with a passing big. You are running this play for your best shooter or scorer and your point guard. You will need to drill with your players on how to come off a hand off, and how to have your bigs read the defense to make the fake hand off. This is a great action for teams with a point guard that will be over played on the hand off. See More

Basketball Play - How Miami got Ray Allen wide open from deep in crunchtime

How Miami got Ray Allen wide open from deep in crunchtime

Mark Travis 01/31/2013

No player in NBA history has ever been more criticized for his late game play than LeBron James. Anytime he passes the ball in a close game, people begin to question whether or not he has the mental fortitude to be a winner. Thankfully, LeBron won a title last season and now all of that talk is gone. Now we can start appreciating his unselfish play in crunchtime, which is a good thing for all basketball fans. Here is a play that the Heat used down four to the Toronto Raptors in overtime last week that I call Horns Flare. Miami is going to utilize every player on the court in some way or another and the end result of the play is a wide open three for Ray Allen, which is probably the best outcome you can think of in a close game. Basketball Play - Point of Board Shooting

Point of Board Shooting

Daniel Murphy 04/25/2013

I got this drill from Dr. Hal Wissel, former assistant coach to Hubie Brown with the Memphis Grizzlies. He uses it at his Shoot it Better mini camps. It is very similar to the Navy Shooting drill Bert DeSalvo shared with Fastmodel http://www.fastmodelsports.com/library/basketball/fastdraw/1567/play-Navy-Shooting This drill will show the shooter when their mechanics are perfect. After focusing on a target as small as the point of the backboard, the rim seems much larger. Dr. Wissel believes in doing this 100 times per day. I have my players shoot 10 perfect shots before moving on to the next drill. See More

Basketball Play - Colorado Ball Screen Motion Post Action

Colorado Ball Screen Motion Post Action

Dana Beszczynski 01/06/2014

Colorado under Head Coach Thad Boyle have gone 79-39 over the last three years. Boyle is now in his 4th season. The Buffs are now up to number 20 in the latest poll before the start of Conference Season against Oregon State. This is a nice play out of their Ball Screen Motion as coming off the SPNR, the wing reads the defense running into the lane to set a cross screen freeing up the post for a pass down low from the top. Spencer Dinwiddie and Askia Booker are two exciting high profile players to watch this year in PAC 12 play for Colorado!! See More

Basketball Play - Depaul Horns Action

Depaul Horns Action

Kevin Bruinsma 01/22/2015

Trailing by 2 with 20 seconds left and facing a UIC 2-3 zone defense Depaul went to a horns action against the zone. They made it difficult for UIC’s zone to determine when to bump and when to stay defending the ball and it ultimately led to an open game winning 3. Keep in mind Depaul didn't hit the shot off the initial action, but the action broke UIC down and led to the wide open 3 pointer. See More

Basketball Play - Transition Offense

Transition Offense

Dana Beszczynski 02/23/2014

The Bruins of Belmont have a line-up which is extremely hard to guard. With dangerous weapons on the perimeter, guarding them requires a lot of planning and a good strategy. This set shows a lot of movement and if the defense switches the FT line screen, it sets up an open 3 pt shot, inside pass or open side penetration depending on who's handling the ball. In this situation, Windler the leading 3 pt shooter in the Conference gets a wide open shot made possible by the quick passing of the Bruins in their half court offense. See More

Basketball Play - Stacks High

Stacks High

John Leonzo 07/12/2013

Here is a set play that starts out with high stacks and morphs into a 1-4 set. This is a great set because it gets the ball swinging from side to side, has action going both towards and away from the basket, as well as a ball screen. You can also adapt this play so that 2 and 4 play pick and pop after the ball screen or you can pop 1 out for a 3pt chance off a stagger screen from 4 and 5 after 4 ball screens 2. See More
