Basketball Play - Motion Breakdowns - 1/0 With Chair

Motion Breakdowns - 1/0 With Chair

Randy Sherman 02/12/2015

Motion Breakdowns: To begin teaching the four basic cuts of motion offense (curl, back, out, straight) use a folding chair to simulate the screener setting a downscreen. Players on the wing have a ball, they pass to coach/Asst./Mgr./player who is centered. Stress setting up the cut by "walking the arc" then sprinting the cut. Miss the chair late! Call your cut! Teach the two inside cuts (curl, back) first. Work the drill on both sides or the floor. You can have four folding chairs and four lines on a single court with players rotating from line to line. Drill should be LOUD with players calling cuts! If you run motion, this is your most basic shooting drill. Do it daily. These are your game shots! See More

Basketball Play - UIC Horns Screen-Screener

UIC Horns Screen-Screener

Kevin Bruinsma 02/11/2015

With Horns being such a popular set at all levels I thought I’d take a look at another action that UIC ran in their game at Milwaukee. They dribbled the point guard over to the wing and had him dribble off both 4 & 5 ball screens. Milwaukee tried to defend this in multiple ways which you will see in the video below. They tried to hedge it with the 5 man, and then they attempted to switch it. I thought this action was great to get your point guard off two ball screens, then get your 2 man coming off a screen the screener for a shot. See More

Basketball Play - Oakland Overload

Oakland Overload

Kevin Bruinsma 02/10/2015

Oakland has made a commitment this season to throwing the ball in to the post to one of the best centers in the league #42 Corey Petros. Their offense has evolved from a dribble drive offense with moments of the Dick Bennett “Movers & Blockers” offense which we actually ran a bit during my time at Portland. Valparaiso has always doubled big to big on post entries so Oakland must have added a play to their arsenal before playing this game. The irony of it is they took the play from Valpo who has been running the overload play for years and added one wrinkle. With the guards cleaning out it opens up the over top lob pass for the 5 if they front. With the flare screen for the 1 it puts the PG as the only back side help and he is guarding the flare cut. When the ball goes into #42 Petros the 4 man #4 Hayes dives right to the rim as his man doubles the center. The only person on that side of the floor available to help is the point guard who is no match-up for a 6’8 power forward. See More

Basketball Play - Horns Loop

Horns Loop

Kyle Gilreath 02/09/2015

Saturday night in their ESPN College Gameday game in Gainesville vs Florida, the Kentucky Wildcats run this quick double-backscreen play to start the 2nd half. What made this play so effective was the timing by 3 who hesitated at the top of the key before 5 caught the ball. See More

Basketball Play - YSU Horns Options

YSU Horns Options

Kevin Bruinsma 02/03/2015

When playing Cleveland State you have to find ways to counter their pressue and make it as difficult as possible for them to successfully trap you. They trap all ball screens so running a horns set is one of the most difficult ways for them to do that successfully. Trailing at the half at our place we started the second half running three different variations of horns on our first three possessions. We scored on all 3. With them trapping the ball screen it makes it crucial the opposite post defender sinks in the hole or there is a strong blitz from the corner/wing defender. You can see in the first clip how even though our PG #11 DJ Cole got trapped as soon as he got the ball to our 4 man #4 Shawn Amiker he had a clear driving lane to the basket. The second clip shows us going off the 4 man, their 5 didn't sink far enough and we got an And 1. The third & final clip shows a pass entry that brought us to a back screen and down screen action on the side of the floor. With them pressuring the ball our 5 man #20 Bobby Hain created space off the bounce and hit the slipping 4 man for a lay-up. See More

Basketball Play - CSU 5 Man Iso & USF Side Elevator (2 plays)

CSU 5 Man Iso & USF Side Elevator (2 plays)

Kevin Bruinsma 02/03/2015

Tied at 59-59 with under two minutes to go in a Non-Conference game between Cleveland State/San Francsico. The first diagram & Video is the CSU 5 Man Iso. #15 Anton Grady is their cornerstone player and in a big situation they love to clear out the side and let him either score or distribute. In this clip he kicks it out to the corner for a huge 3. San Francsico then took the ball out and pushed it up the floor right into a side elevator screen for #32 Derksen who is their best scoring wing. Their action was so successful because of how smoothly they got into it and executed after giving up a big 3. See More

Basketball Play - Valpo Pick & Roll

Valpo Pick & Roll

Kevin Bruinsma 01/31/2015

In a marquee Horizon League match-up earlier in the year Valparaiso made the trip to face Oakland. Trailing with under two minutes left in the game Valpo turned to a pick & roll action with movement out of both corners to occupy the low man away who traditionally covers the rim. By rolling up #25 Peters on the ball side it forced the Oakland defender to follow up, making the back side defenders sink in the middle. The pin down screen and space kept those defenders in defending action as opposed to getting into gaps. All of the movement out of both corners confused Oakland and led to a huge basket for Valpo. Basketball Play - Notre Dame Motion II

Notre Dame Motion II

Dana Beszczynski 01/31/2015

Mike Brey's Motion's Offense has multiple options depending on the cut and what's available with the read. Here against Duke, Notre Dame came down and ran a 2nd option whereby they incorporate the cross court pass into a sprint ball screen action with their 5 man Auguste - 30. Grant - 22 is so good at getting in the lane with his quickness and ball handling ability that the defense on Connaughton - 24 is forced to help opening up the lane for a baseline cut and lay-up. Mike Brey has really perfected the Irish's Motion set in the last years and his team is adept at executing it to perfection. See More

Basketball Play - Notre Dame Motion

Notre Dame Motion

Dana Beszczynski 01/31/2015

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame under Head Coach Mike Brey have been the surprise team of the year in the ACC. Brey's style is hard to copy as the Irish use multiple cuts and screening actions in their offense to score. In the game Wednesday night against Duke, this is the Opening Play they ran which really shows clearly how their movement opens up good spacing and the screening actions are so well timed to really force the defense into quick decision making. This was one of the most exciting games of the year and the Irish are moving towards a top seed in the NCAA Tournament come March. See More

Basketball Play - YSU Cycle for 3

YSU Cycle for 3

Kevin Bruinsma 01/30/2015

Down 3 last night at Detroit we diagramed this play in a timeout to free up our best 3 point shooter while giving our PG the chance to drive it 1 on 1 with the entire side of the floor cleared for him. It forced Detroit to overhelp, and led to a wide open 3-pointer which we hit to send the game into overtime. The 5 sprinting up and acting like he was going to set a screen before he set the second screen of the stagger was a great touch as Detroit "Downs" ball screens. The stagger was successful and our 2 was able to drive it to force Detroit to help even more before kicking it out. The extra passes led to a wide open jumper. See More
