Basketball Play - Dallas Mavericks "Flip Baseline Exit"

Dallas Mavericks "Flip Baseline Exit"

Gibson Pyper 02/12/2016

Dallas runs a great set for some of their stretch 4's and Chandler Parsons when they go small out of flip action. Flip action is the action in which a player receives the pass and then flips it right back to the player who passes it to him. After this initial action, the player who flipped it back receives a backscreen to the rim which is just decoy action. The big who sets the backscreen then receives the pass and hands it off to a guard on the wing cutting. The big then screens down for the stretch 4 who is under the rim to receive an open look coming off the baseline down screen. See More

Basketball Play - Tennessee - Fake Release BLOB

Tennessee - Fake Release BLOB

Lucas Shapiro 02/09/2016

If the inbounder is the most forgettable player on these types of plays, then the release option is the second most forgettable. This was an impressive set for Rick Barnes to draw up after a timeout. They a screen-the-screener play and then had all of the players space out around the perimeter. This allowed the release option to cut to the hoop for the open dunk. This play helped Tennessee separate themselves for the upset. See More

Basketball Play - Purdue Shuffle Stagger Action

Purdue Shuffle Stagger Action

Dana Beszczynski 02/08/2016

This is an excellent play designed by Purdue Coach Matt Painter out of a Box Set. Purdue runs a pass entry into a UCLA screening action. With the opposite big popping to the TOK, the PG sets a shuffle cut and runs into a double stagger. On the pass to the TOK, the wing then runs baseline off a triple screen to the opposite side looking to make the defense chase. At the end, Purdue runs a "hamer screen" action off a guard-to-guard exchange and as a last option a SPNR into a shot behind the SPNR See More

Basketball Play - Chicago Bulls "Zipper Backdoor"

Chicago Bulls "Zipper Backdoor"

Gibson Pyper 02/04/2016

This is exactly like the action the San Antonio Spurs run. Because the Chicago Bulls like to post up Pau Gasol and he is an excellent passer, this set works well. Typically designed after a time out, Butler cuts off Gasol who receives the pass in the post. Giving Butler time to clear the cut is key, so the timing of the lob/backdoor cut can be perfect. Basketball Play - Maryland Terrapins - Box Shuffle

Maryland Terrapins - Box Shuffle

Lucas Shapiro 02/02/2016

When you have a post player like Robert Carter and a point guard like Melo Trimble, it may sometimes seem like a coach can run anything and it would work. But you have to respect Mark Turgeon’s thinking on this play to put one of his best players in a good position to do what he is best at. This is a good set for any team, especially ones where a team has guards that have a hard time entering the ball into the post. The combination of the ball screen for the guard and the backscreen for big to the same side makes the post entry easy to make. See More
