05/30/2013I figured with so many people doing one set and one drawing, I wanted to offer something different. After reviewing all four games of the Western Conference Finals between the Memphis Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs I looked at actions that were successful and one's that didn't have quite as much success. I started with the Memphis Grizzlies. The play diagrams below are drawn for multiple plays with the play name titled directly on top of the court frame. Pacer Deny Action
06/14/2013A common screen the screener set ran by a lot of High School, College, and NBA teams was used by the Indiana Pacers against the Miami Heat. As you will see in most of Indiana's play sets they run a lot of stuff for their 3 man, #24 Paul George. Here they use George to set the back screen for the post before he runs off 5's screen for a wing catch. He has the option to shoot, drive, or dump it inside to the posting #55 Roy Hibbert. See More

Back Tip & Convert
06/28/2013This is a defensive drill that during my three years at Cleveland State we did a multiple times a week. It incorporates a lot of things and teaches/practices fundamentals while letting the guys get after it and be competetive. The back tip and convert drill allows you to learn how to back tip the ball properly and then transition immediatly into offense so you work on your 2 on 1 breaks. The key to this drill is the back tipper needs to sprint, and tip the ball up with his inside hand. Don't reach, just run the floor and tip the ball. A really great defense to offense drill while teaching a unique skill. See More

Spurs Horns Stagger
07/03/2013The Spurs ran a nice variety of stuff out of the classic Horns set. They also loved to do things with a stagger action. Here they got their 2 the ball off a stagger and immediatly into a dribble handoff. This put the defense in a trailing position, and allowed the 5 to slip right to the rim for a basket against the Miami Heat. See More

Spurs SLOB Pin Down DH
07/06/2013The Spurs ran this play a lot to get #20 Manu Ginobili coming hard to get a dribble handoff. The pin down screen created some problems for opposing defenses and led to an open look for #21 Tim Duncan after giving Ginobili the handoff. See More

Spurs Stagger Screen
07/08/2013The San Antonio Spurs utilized a lot of movement and spacing to create open rolling lanes for #21 Tim Duncan. Here they look for the quick hoop as the 3 man curls off a stagger screen. After screening #21 Tim Duncan pops back to get a catch. He executes a dribble handoff and dives hard to the rim. The Miami Heat had a difficult time dealing with him rolling. See More

Miami DH Pin Down Reverse
07/13/2013Miami entered a lot of their offense with a dribble handoff. Here after the DH #34 Ray Allen sets up his man and runs off a screen looking for his shot. If the shot isnt there he hands right back to 2 or in this case #3 Dwayne Wade. On the handoff #3 Dwayne Wade gets a ball screen from #1 Chris Bosh with the entire side of the floor open. See More

07/16/2013The Miami Heat loved to enter their offense with a dribble handoff into an iverson cut. This set ends with the 2 who set a screen in the iverson cut, cracking back to set a ball screen for #6 Lebron James to an open side of the floor. Using the screen to get deep then the 4 who set the last screen in the iverson cut comes and sets a ball screen at a really deep angle. Tough to defend. See More

01/26/2015While going thru the game I was really impressed by Michigan’s first offensive play call out of half time, it involved great spacing, driving lanes, and the ball switching sides of the floor. The action forced Detroit to put multiple guys in rotations to protect the rim, guard a handoff, defend the drive, and recover to shooters. See More
