Basketball Play - OU

OU

Rory Hamilton 07/18/2017

Here is an excellent sideline out of bounds I've seen coach Sherri Coale run over the years. I've added a few of my own wrinkles to it but its a great play with multiple options. Initial set up is a your best shooter at the FT line and best finishing guard around the slot area. Both post players are positioned on the blocks. 3 player times cut and waits for 5 to flash for basketball similar to the blind pig action in the flex offense. The point guard passes to the post player flashing to the elbow and the post immediately looks to hit the 3 man on a backdoor (vs. aggressive defense). If the backdoor is not available, the point guard receives a dribble handoff (DHO) from the post player. After receiving the DHO, the point guard stretches the play out while the 4 man flashes to the block for a potential post pass. The 5 man will then receive a back screen from the shooter for a potential lob pass. 2 shapes up after backscreen and looks for a shot or immediately looks to dribble over and post the mismatch. If the guard cannot get the ball to the post player due to being fronted, then the weakside big flashes to catch and immediately throw a high-low pass into the post. See More

Basketball Play - Virginia Tech Hokies - Back Screen DHO

Virginia Tech Hokies - Back Screen DHO

Rory Hamilton 03/19/2021

This is a play Va Tech used in the first half of their game vs. Florida. The play uses a back screen by a shooting guard on a post player at the top of the key forcing the guard's defender to help on the lob and then have to fight through a DHO to get back to a shooter. A great play design by coach Mike Young. FastModel's biggest offer of the year for new subscribers! Use code at checkout: MARCHMADNESS See More

Basketball Play - Oakland Grizzlies - Floppy Rip Grenade

Oakland Grizzlies - Floppy Rip Grenade

Rory Hamilton 03/24/2024

Play begins with Floppy action as 3 screens for 2 and then exits out weak side. The 2 comes off of 5's pindown screen. The 2 immediately curls the 5's screen and looks to set a rip screen for the 4. The 5 pops towards the 3pt line after the 2 curls to create a catch on the wing and looks to beam it to the 4 coming low off the screen. If the 4 is not open on the initial rip screen, he continues his cut to the short corner and looks to create a catch. On 4's catch the grenade action takes place: the 5 screens in for 2 and the 4 dribbles at the screen for a DHO and screen to create a 3pt shot for the 2. See More

Basketball Play - NC State Wolfpack - Secondary STS

NC State Wolfpack - Secondary STS

Rory Hamilton 04/06/2024

NC State filled these spots in transition and ran this action for a lay-up in the first half vs. South Carolina. Play begins with 1 passing the ball to the top of the key to the trailing 4. The 4 executes a DHO with the 3 while 5 follows the ball and 2 moves to the weak side block ready to set a block to block screen. The 3 comes off the DHO looking for the 5 going low off the block to block screen. If the 5 is not open low the 4 then sets a screen for the screen to free up the 2 for a potential 3pt shot on the wing or corner. See More

Basketball Play - Floppy DHO

Floppy DHO

Cody Toppert 09/04/2015

A DHO entry to Floppy will most likely be on the wing Guard to Guard. This means the point guard would speed dribble pitch the ball to the corner wing coming up. The wing will now become the point of initiation and the point guard will be come the activated player. This look most likely proceeds to be a back screening action by the strong side big. The popular version employed by the San Antonio Spurs involves a guard-to-guard DHO and a triple staggered baseline screen for Tony Parker who sprints the base line to find the scoring option on the weak side. Important to not the weak side wing must be the second screener I order to prevent a switch on the final screen, thus negating any type of advantage or open shot. Once the defense gets use to the triple baseline screen, Tony Parker will often times enter and exit the same side, thus showing us a DHO into a traditional Floppy Look. See More

Basketball Play - Tight Curl

Tight Curl

Cody Toppert 09/18/2015

As the 1 selects the side to initiate and the 5 flashes to the elbow, the 1 hits the 5. Tight curl indicates that immediately following the entry pass a split screen takes place. The 1 sprints to the corner to screen the strong side corner guard. In the tight curl read, the 2 curls the screen from the 1 and sprints to the weak side to spot up. The 1 immediately pops back (above the break for spacing, or close the free-throw line extended) and the 5 goes DHO / SPNR /Dribble Pitch with the 1. At the same time as he two man game ensues, the weak side action takes place. If going with the 4 high, a wide pin down for the 3 takes place. If a keeping the 3 high, a fade screen for the 3 works well here (see Washington Wizards, Portland Trailblazers). See More

Basketball Play - Long Curl

Long Curl

Cody Toppert 09/18/2015

After hitting the elbow man, the 1 again sprints to the split screen. In this look the 2 elects to use the split screen and sprint to the DHO with the 5. As that takes place, the 5 hands the ball off and dives to the basket. The 2 takes the HO and looks to get down hill while the 1 lifts out of the corner. On the weak side the same action ensues with the 4 setting a wide pin for the 3 or with the 4 setting a fade screen. See More

Basketball Play - Chase

Chase

Cody Toppert 09/18/2015

After hitting the elbow, the 1 fakes sprinting to the split screen and instead chases the DHO from the 5. After taking the HO from the 5, the 1 looks to attack or back it up. The 5 then sets a wide pin for the 2 while the 4 sets a wide pin for the 3. See More

Basketball Play - Slice

Slice

Cody Toppert 09/18/2015

If the 1 goes DHO with the 2 Slice Action can take place. That means the 4 will pop out (or set a flare screen to move up top and then pop out). The 2 will immediately reverse the ball to the 4 who will complete the full reversal but hitting the 3 on the wing. The 2 will then “Slice” cut to the strong side block off the screen from the 5. After the cut, the 5 and 4 set a double staggered for the 1 who receives the pass from the 3 at the top of the key. After screening 1, the 4 and 5 complete the wheel action and screen the 2 who peels back off the second double staggered. The 1 then looks to hit the 2 for the shot. See More

Basketball Play - Push

Push

Cody Toppert 09/18/2015

If the 1 pushes the 4 into a wide pin down, push action ensues. The 3 tight curls the 4, the 4 then pops back to the elbow and the 1 chases a DHO. If the HO is not there the 5 screens away for the 2 and the 4 goes DHO with the 2 at the opposite elbow. See More
