Basketball Play - Creighton Bluejays - Stagger Burn

Creighton Bluejays - Stagger Burn

Tony Miller 03/18/2022

Watch the video below as Coach Tony Miller uses FastDraw, the #1 play diagramming program for basketball coaches, to break down this backdoor look that a number of NCAA tourney teams have gone to when needing a bucket. There are many ways to get to the final “burn” action, but in this case the Jays use a stagger to pull help defenders away from the rim. Send the play to your FastDraw library via the button above. Basketball Play - Triple Baseline Screen

Triple Baseline Screen

Matt Hackenberg 01/26/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play for three-point shot. This set requires great timing. I like it for a short clock attempt to find a three. I also think it sets up for the misdirection backdoor set on the back side of the play off of a reverse pivot by the ball handler, although we don't see that in this clip below. Basketball Play - Horns Veer Stagger

Horns Veer Stagger

Matt Hackenberg 01/24/2022

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a horns alignment. The ball handler uses the horns ball screens and reads the strong side backdoor, or the shooter coming off the double veer on the back side. Basketball Play - Push Zip Iverson Series - Blind Pig

Push Zip Iverson Series - Blind Pig

Matt Hackenberg 12/31/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a series of plays from the push zip Iverson movement series. The featured action in the video is the blind pig backdoor. This is a clever action, and with good timing it can be very tough to defend. Basketball Play - Push Zip Iverson Series

Push Zip Iverson Series

Matt Hackenberg 11/23/2021

This is a series of plays that all originate out of the same basic movement pattern. The movement pattern masks the outcome of the play to help against teams that are well prepared through scouting. The series of plays is designed to feature a dynamic soring point guard. The push zip iverson action helps create safe movement against teams that like to pressure. I like the series of plays because it allows for creativity from a dynamic player (the side ball screen), looks for cheap points (blind pig and backdoor), and gets a shooter a a good look for three in a crafty way. Basketball Play - Townsville Fire (WNBL) - Clear Back Cut

Townsville Fire (WNBL) - Clear Back Cut

Aaron Schuck 10/04/2021

This backdoor set comes from the Townsville Fire of the WNBL in Australia. A couple coaching points: 2 must time it well to begin walking defender up the arc to make sure she gets high enough so on the cut she is above the block. PG attacks right at 2 defenders to get her to react to the ball so 2 can back cut. PG passes as 2 starts the cut. Video clip below. See More

Memphis Grizzlies - Horns Stagger Back Cut

Tony Miller 04/19/2021

Watch the video below as Coach Tony Miller uses FastDraw, the #1 play diagramming program for basketball coaches, to break down this quick hitting set from the Grizzlies which takes advantage of an overplaying defense. x3 and x5 will be expecting a DHO, and also notice the spacing to ensure no help is available to cover the backdoor. Basketball Play - Texas Longhorns - Point Over

Texas Longhorns - Point Over

Dave Nedbalek 11/18/2020

One of the things that Texas does best is simplicity. They have shot creators and playmakers surrounded by great positional length, and with the addition of elite level athleticism in Greg Brown they are even more versatile. Shaka Smart's approach to offense in Austin has been predicated on spacing the floor wide, using middle and twisted ball screens with pogo stick big men who put pressure on the rim and let players go make plays. They also place a premium on off ball cuts. The Longhorns do a great job of backdoor cuts if the defender loses sight of them while helping to stop dribble penetration. #Top25XsOs: Honorable Mention Teams | Teams 25-21 | Teams 20-16 | Teams 15-11 | Teams 10-6 | Teams 5-1 *New customers use discount code SAVE10 at purchase* See More

Basketball Play - Virginia Cavaliers - PNR Continuity

Virginia Cavaliers - PNR Continuity

Matt Wheeler 04/04/2019

Virginia uses a pick and roll continuity set that provides multiple opportunities for ball screens in a single possession. 1 dribbles off the ball screen looking for 5 rolling to the basket. If he isn’t available, 1 immediately passes to 4 up top. 4 looks for a quick pass to 5 continuing his cut to the rim. This is extremely effective against teams that hard hedge because x5 now has to sprint back to the paint to take away the layup. If 4 doesn’t have anything he will reverse the ball to one of the perimeter players. Just like in their motion offense, Virginia gives their players freedom to make decisions in this play. Most of the time 2 will make a backdoor cut, then 4 will follow his pass to 3 with a ball screen. This action can run continuously on both sides of the floor until they get the shot they want. The Cavaliers have the option of 4 reversing the ball to 2 and following with the ball screen. If this happens 3 cuts to the opposite corner, taking the place of 2 and keeping the continuity going. Basketball Play - Ohio State Buckeyes - Weave Euro Chase

Ohio State Buckeyes - Weave Euro Chase

Dave Nedbalek 03/26/2019

This set involves a great amount of false motion that can easily be used to create scoring opportunities if you look to exploit any missteps. Have your players not rush the backdoor cuts especially on the weak side opposite of the big as this is a viable scoring cut. If there are any miscues on the handoffs the ball handler can easily fake the handoff and have a wide open lane to the rim. There are lot of great counters you could run out of this such as turn the last backdoor cut into a smash cut or even cross screen for a throwback post feed. See More

Basketball Play - Belmont Bruins - "Panic Reverse" (Late Clock)

Belmont Bruins - "Panic Reverse" (Late Clock)

Doug Brotherton 03/22/2019

Belmont trailed by 1, with 20 seconds left, in their first round match-up with Maryland. Coach Byrd decided to hold for one shot, and ran the counter to their "Panic Backdoor set." It is a great late clock action, but the ball pressure led to a deflection. It is worth having in your back pocket as a pressure release at the end of games. #FastModelMadness NCAA Tournament: Viewing Guide by Style of Play See More
