Basketball Play - 1-3-1 Zone Set Play

1-3-1 Zone Set Play

Dana Beszczynski 05/30/2015

John Beilein had a masterful game plan against the Syracuse 2-3 Zone and here is another example of moving players and the ball to get the best possible shot The Orangemen were consistently spread out by the passing of the Wolverines and had their fair share of open looks There were also many secondary options off the sets which created match-up problems for the vaunted Syracuse Zone Defense of Jim Boeheim See More

Basketball Play - San Antonio Spurs "Cross Elevator"

San Antonio Spurs "Cross Elevator"

Gibson Pyper 04/30/2015

Gregg Popovich has mastered the art of getting his second unit to run great after time outs/sets to open up the second and fourth quarters and he ran a great set against the Clippers for a 3 pointer. This set is an Elevator set for Patty Mills. Mills starts by passing the ball to the wing and cutting to the middle of the key. He fakes like he will set a cross screen for 3 to freeze his man and sprints through the elevator doors. See More

Colorado Mesa Swing Action

Wes Kosel 04/26/2015

The ball is swung from the left side of the floor to the right. Once 2 has the ball on the right wing, 3 sets a flare-screen for 1. 2 passes to 4 who looks for 1 on the flare. If that option isn't open, 4 passing to 3 popping up from the screen. 3 then passes to 1 and moves towards the right elbow with 4 to set a staggered screen for 2. 2 cuts around the screen looking for a shot. Trail Blazer Horns Wheel

Wes Kosel 04/26/2015

4 screens down for 2 who cuts up and gets the pass from 1. 2 makes the quick pass back to 1 then flares off of 5's screen at the right elbow. At the same time, 3 cuts to the left wing/corner off of a screen from 4. If 1 has trouble passing to 2 on the initial cut, he can continue dribbling towards the left wing as 4 posts up. See More

Basketball Play - Ole Miss Horns PNR

Ole Miss Horns PNR

Wes Kosel 03/18/2015

NCAA Tournament First Four: Here is a play from Tuesday night's game between BYU and Ole Miss. The Rebels did a good job of getting into the paint and shooting the open shot or passing off to the open post players cutting to the basket. In this play, Ole Miss sets up in a horns set and the point guard takes the ball to the right off of the screen from 4. The point guard looks first to turn the corner and score or create a mid-range shot. If nothing is open, he has 4 rolling to the basket and 5 popping out. If 1 passes to 5, 5 passes to 3 on the wing and follows his pass directly into a wing pick & roll. The Rebels had great success with actions like this getting into the paint with their quick guards. If 3 doesn't have a shot, he looks to draw the defenders into help so that he can pass off to one of the post player for an easy dunk. See More

Basketball Play - Wofford Terriers Zipper Post Options

Wofford Terriers Zipper Post Options

Wes Kosel 03/17/2015

Here are two plays from Wofford Terriers head coach Mike Young. The Terriers are back in the NCAA Tournament for the 2nd straight year and for the 4th time in the past 6 seasons. In these plays, the Terriers use the point guard to set a down screen for 5. 5 makes the zipper cut up the lane line looking for the ball at the elbow or slightly extended. The small on big down screen makes it hard for the defense to defend the zipper cut into the hand-off actions. If the defense switches, the post defender is now guarding a smaller player on a hand-off (when he is used to guarding the post player). Zipper Post #1: In the first option, 2 passes to 5 at the elbow and 1 loops around 5 looking for a hand-off. If 1 cannot turn the corner, he has 4 coming off of a down screen on the weak side or 2 slipping to the basket. Zipper Post #2:In the second option, it starts just like the first play with 1 setting the screen for 5 and 5 cutting up to get the ball at the elbow. Instead of 1 cutting around 5 for hand-off. This time 3 moves in from the wing to loop around 5. Once 3 has the ball, he has the same scoring and passing options as 1 did in the first play. See More

Basketball Play - Motion Breakdowns - 2/2 With A Coach

Motion Breakdowns - 2/2 With A Coach

Randy Sherman 03/10/2015

First completely "live" drill in motion offense teaching progressions. Once you have installed the four cuts, downscreens, shallow cuts and flare screens put the motion offense fundamentals to the test with this live drill. Coach is the passer. Player beginning the drill in the high elbow is the screener throughout the possession. Correct poor timing and incorrect reads immediately. At any time during the possession a player can pass to coach and the two offensive players set screening action. Empasize the second cutter concept. Coach can pass to screener or cutter off downscreens or flare screens. Coach can force rescreens by not passing to the action. Drill is run on one side of the floor at a time. Drill consists of action off of downscreens, flares, slips, rescreens, cuts. No excessive dribbling ball screens. Coach is always open! Use them and score with action. Put your roster in pairs with one screener and one cutter and play for 8:00 (4:00 on each side of the floor) You come into the drill on defense with your partner. To get to offense, you have to get a stop, rebound and outlet to coach. Rotate from defense to offense. If you score you stay and new pair comes in on defense. The drill begins with pass from high elbow (1) to coach. Emphasize basket cut into the downscreen. Variations/Restrictions: Instead of passing to coach, start with a shallow cut. Pass to coach, make a deep basket cut, wing fills the high elbow setting up flare screen. Only a second cutter (screener) can score. See More

Basketball Play - Indiana

Indiana

Adam Spinella 03/07/2015

Coach Wooden preached ball movement from side-to-side, making the defense move frequently and never letting the ball settle. With lots of quick passes in 10 to 15 foot gaps, Wooden was a master at designing plays that forced his teams to share the ball. As a counter, many defenses would start to jump passing lanes or make perimeter passing more difficult. When that would occur, Wooden would run "Indiana", a backdoor set that played through the high post. See More

Basketball Play - Post Boomerang

Post Boomerang

Kyle Gilreath 03/06/2015

March 5, 2015 - Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau drew up this marvelous sideline out-of-bounds play to give Chicago the go head basket and eventually defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder. Having a dominate and skilled (passing) big in the post helps, being only down 1 Gasol had the option for a quick turn and score but trusted his teammate E'Twaun Moore for the shot. See More

Basketball Play - Rick Pitino Louisville Cardinals 2-1-2 Offense - Double Back-Screen

Rick Pitino Louisville Cardinals 2-1-2 Offense - Double Back-Screen

Scott Peterman 02/24/2015

Rick Pitino believes in ball movement and spacing. His Lousiville Cardinal offense will change based on the available talent. If it's a good passing team then they will have more motion. He thinks that an effective coach will be prepared both offensively and defensively. Coach Rick Pitino thinks that you should improve your players and help them reach their potential. The big thing is that you have to understand how to win and lose..... plus understand team chemistry. Basketball Play - David Blatt Horns 1 Set Play

David Blatt Horns 1 Set Play

Scott Peterman 02/19/2015

David Blatt been around the Israeli and Euroleague basketball circuit. Including coaching for Maccabi Tel Aviv (they de bezt, alweyz de bezt) and the Russian National Team (Kirilenko, Mozgov, Shved). He coached Anthony Parker back into the NBA. Names don't exactly get the point across, but let it be known, that he has coached winning teams, almost exclusively. And thats the point of the game. From what I can gather Blatt's teams run a lot through a horns offense. Which, if you don't know, puts two guys- one on either- high post (witch's nipple), two guys in opposite corner/wings and starts with the ball handler at the top of the key. It is not a triangle offense, but it does revolve around cerebral players creating space with passing, smart cutting and good footwork. Certainly a proprietor of the Triangle has respect for this, a verySpurs-y set of offensive goals. Everybody needs touches to make this kitten purr. Everyone needs to fill the open spaces that relate to their skill set, and everyone must become a threat when they have the ball. Basketball Play - UNC Lob Play

UNC Lob Play

Adam Spinella 02/19/2015

Today's Play of the Day is one of the classic lob plays against a zone. Run by great programs like Cincinnati and North Carolina time and time again, the offense lulls the zone to sleep with perimeter passing, then strikes for a lob with two back screens on the bottom of the zone. That frees up the lob on the opposite side, and a well-thrown pass will break down the zone. See More
