Basketball Play - UVA Box Zipper Fence

UVA Box Zipper Fence

Timothy Hipps 12/26/2015

These are a pair of plays the UVA Cavaliers ran against Cal on 12/22/2015. What makes this set so great is that they were both run out of time outs with a minute or less left in OT and had progreession. The defense was prepared for the second time, however UVA added another action when the initial look was not open. Hat Tip to @coachmurphhoops for the find. See More

Basketball Play - Elevator Counter Option

Elevator Counter Option

Dana Beszczynski 12/23/2015

This final timeout designed play by Tony Bennett would prove to be the game winner for the Virginia Cavaliers in their match-up with the Golden Bears of CAL. Run from the same Box Set as the previous action which yielded a 3 pt make from Brogdon (15), this time Brogdon again moves down the lane, fist in the air and quickly cuts baseline around the screen from Wilkins (21). Perrantes (32) dribbles over and makes the pass and then quickly cuts away and then when Gill (13) is set, Perrantes (32) sprints off the screen and receives a well placed and timed pass for the game winning 3 pt shot. Tony Bennett really did a great job last night in clock management, maximizing his timeouts with 3 set plays that are gems and can be filed away by any Coach for future similar situations! See More

Basketball Play - Box Set - Gate Action

Box Set - Gate Action

Dana Beszczynski 12/23/2015

The 2nd ATO play run by the Cavaliers last night was out of a Box Set. Brogdon sells this play by putting up his FIST like he will down screen for Thompson and quickly changes directions cutting through the elevator screen set by Gill & and Wilkins. Perrantes dribbles over for a good passing angle and hits Brogdon flaring out of the elevator screen for a 3 pt shot This play was well designed and executed to perfection by Tony Bennett's Cavaliers in a pressure situation. Basketball Play - ATO - UVA

ATO - UVA

Dana Beszczynski 12/23/2015

Last night the Cavaliers were taken to the limit against the Golden Bears of Cal. Tony Bennett designed three consecutive timeout plays each of which yielded a basket. This is the first of those timeout plays. Run from the SLOB situation, the play is set-up by the elbow screen action which gave Brogdon a chance to either "read" and cut to the basket or come back off the "re-screen" action for a possible jumper. Tony Bennett is known for his defensive strategies, but last night these timeout actions he ran with his Cavs only showed what a true mastermind of the game he is. See More

Basketball Play - 1-4 Quick Hitter (Zone 1 or 2)

1-4 Quick Hitter (Zone 1 or 2)

Adam Barnes 12/21/2015

If you are looking for a play to get you an open 3-point field goal, this play, if ran correctly, should get you a great look at the basket (with rebounders in place to keep the possession alive). As the PG passes to the 4, we like the 3 to "play with" the corner defender, try to occupy his attention as much as possible, so we can get the top ball-side defender to pick up the ball off the initial pass. After passing the ball, the PG will flash like he is making a ball-side corner cut (which is a great way to get a quick entry into the post) but instead, will fill the opposite corner. The help defender on the top will naturally sink and fall towards the mid-line. Once the PG has cleared the lane, we want our 3 to cut to the top of the key. As he is cutting, we would like to have the 5 roll over and set a screen on x1. This is all about timing! If the 3 can catch the ball right as the 5 is setting the screen, we are in business. Now, we have the defense right where we want them. As the 3 catches, he immediately attacks DOWNHILL! Do not let the 3 float/dribble outside of the lane. The goal is to get x5 to step up or x4 to step in. Either way, we have the numbers in our favor. Now, we have the options we want. If the x4 steps up, the 3 immediately needs to pass the ball (what we call a hot read) to either the 1 or the 2. If x4 stays low and x5 defends the penetration (which is what we ultimately want), the 3 needs to pass the ball to the 2. If x4 closes out hard on the 2 and he cannot get the shot, then the 2 needs to make the extra pass to the 1 in the corner (where there is no defense). The 4 and the 5 need to crash hard for the rebound. The 3 should be in position in case the shot attempt is short. See More

Basketball Play - Scott Drew

Scott Drew

Dana Beszczynski 12/09/2015

On Aug. 22, 2003, Scott Drew assumed Baylor's head coaching position and took over one of college basketball's most daunting rebuilding projects ever. Eleven years later, he became the program's all-time wins leader. From 2007-15, Baylor rose to national prominence with Drew leading the team to seven 20-win seasons, seven postseason appearances, the Big 12's first NIT championship, Baylor's first postseason tournament title in its 107-year history, and a Big 12-best and school-record 17 postseason wins. This years Baylor team is extremely athletic and can interchange positions in their sets. This is a very good easy to run Motion set the Bears use against Man-to-Man defenses. It incorporates DHO action, SPNR, opportunities for quick hitting backdoor actions, and post.-up scenarios. See More

In his first five seasons as head coach of the Boise State men's basketball team, Leon Rice has taken the Broncos to the NCAA Tournament twice and won at least 20 games four times. They have a very tall line-up and their guards & forwards can interchange in the Broncos Offensive schemes. This is a Motion look with backscreens, ball screens, lots of movement and ball reversal actions designed to move the defense into multiple rotations. See More

Basketball Play - Kentucky

Kentucky

Dana Beszczynski 12/08/2015

John Calipari has had 26 of his Kentucky players drafted in the NBA during his tenure in the Blue Grass State. In 2012 his Wildcats won the NCAA Championship. Last season, the Wildcats finished the season undefeated, but lost in the NCAA Finals to finish the year 38-1 with a perfect 18-0 record in the SEC. Calipari has been a Dribble Drive Motion guru at Kentucky and has tinkered with the system to fit his skilled players. In the last years, the Wildcats have incorporated some different looks to the system, but still like the drive and kick action of the DDM. This is a Diamond set which when executed through can provide many different scoring options. See More

Basketball Play - UNC

UNC

Dana Beszczynski 11/23/2015

This is a very nice set play out of their Secondary Offense. Beginning with a down screen releasing the wing outside for the pass, he immediately looks inside for a post-up situation. On the weak side, a double stagger is being set for the shooter who comes off looking for a possible catch & shoot action out of the post-up. UNC does a very good job running their Secondary actions and this is just one of the gems you can use in your offense at any level. See More
