Basketball Play - Spurs 54 Power

Spurs 54 Power

Brandon Mullis 08/13/2015

NBA TV recently showed on their "Hardwood Classics" the 2003 NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and the New Jersey Nets. In Game 6 late in the 2nd Quarter, the Spurs ran this quick hitter to get a pick and roll action with Tim Duncan and David Robinson. Duncan was able to hit Robinson rolling to the rim for a dunk. Basketball Play - Manhattan Point Loop

Manhattan Point Loop

Wes Kosel 08/04/2015

3 runs across the floor to the opposite corner as 2 runs to the ball-side corner off of a screen from 5. 1 looks to pass to 2 for a shot. If 2 doesn't have anything, he looks to pass inside to 5 posting up or to 1 looping around 4 at the top of the key. See More

Basketball Play - 2 Rip (Billy Donovan Play for Stretch Big)

2 Rip (Billy Donovan Play for Stretch Big)

Jacob Collins 07/30/2015

As a University of Kentucky fan I have been able to watch Billy Donovan several times a year since I was a kid. It's still burned into my mind excellent post players such as David Lee, Jo Noah, and Al Horford dominating my beloved Cats on the block. Although, those are certainly not the only posts that have excelled in his system. This is one of my personal favorites of Coach Donovan and I look forward to seeing how well it works for Kevin Durant. This play is great for multiple reasons. The first, it is a natural counter to a normal secondary break action for the Gators, a spread pick and roll. The guard rejects the screen to drive baseline. The 3 man (normally for Coach Donovan is an excellent 3pt shooter) is spaced in the corner. The key to this play, is freeing up a stretch 4 for an open look. After dishing and spacing, the 1 man leads the stagger for the 4 while the 5 man completes the stagger. What happens if there is a big to big switch? This all depends on your personnel. Let's apply this to Coach Donovan's new team, the Oklahoma City Thunder. If this play is ran for Durant at the 4, the options for the defense aren't pretty. If the screen is gapped, you run the risk of Durant having a wide open look. If you switch, you risk having a center guarding arguably thefts scorer in the league. Again, you don't have KD on your squad and I know I don't. But perhaps this can get you an isolated mismatch. Questions/comments/concerns? Message me on twitter @jacobcollins34 See More

Basketball Play - 1-4 Set- Screen the Screener

1-4 Set- Screen the Screener

Andrew Lacey 07/10/2015

As we keep trying to improve our offensive efficiency, more and more teams are moving towards using ball screens to create scoring opportunities. At Varina we use various alignments to put the defense in a situation to limit what they can do help-side wise to defend our quick game. This is a action we use out of our 1-4 set in late game situations to get a quick shot. See More

Basketball Play - Heat Double Twist

Heat Double Twist

Brandon Mullis 07/01/2015

With the score tied at 94 and 1:05 remaining in Game 4 of the 2014 Eastern Conference Semi Finals, Miami Heat Head Coach Eric Spoelstra drew up this quick hitter to get his two best players in a pick and roll situation (James and Wade) with shooters spacing the floor. In this case, the Brooklyn Nets helped on LBJ's roll to protect the rim, which allowed James to kick out to Chalmers on the wing, who immediately found Chris Bosh in the corner for the open 3. The Heat would stay up for good in the game and take a 3-1 series lead over the Nets. See More
