Basketball Play - Euro Ball Screen into Low Cross Screen (Set Play)

Euro Ball Screen into Low Cross Screen (Set Play)

Matt Hackenberg 12/09/2021

Here we look at a set play that evolves directly from the Euro Ball Screen Offense, designed to get a forward cutting to the basket for an interior touch. I love set plays that originate out of a team's main offense, effectively masking the action to make it harder for the defense to prepare for. Basketball Play - DHO Swing Brush Screen

DHO Swing Brush Screen

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we have a set play to get a dynamic driver some space to operate. The play uses some false motion to open space up for a brush screen to be used to try to create an advantage to drive to the basket. I love these gap drive actions to take some pressure off the driver, and make the defense execute with the brush screen. Basketball Play - 1-4 High: Slip Spread

1-4 High: Slip Spread

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we try to steal some points with a set play designed to slip a ball screener to the rim. As simple as the action is, it works far more often than you think it might. It flows right into a spread ball screen option if the cheap points don't materialize. Box Set - Screen In Hammer Pair

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at two sets that work together to look similar, but produce different scoring opportunities. I will always be a sucker for a well executed hammer set. 4 Out: DHO Back Screen Cross Screen

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 4 Out transition that creates a guard cross screening for a post. I like how the back screen frees up the post player to catch the ball in prime position to read the cross screen. Basketball Play - UCLA Duck Stagger

UCLA Duck Stagger

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we have a set play sometimes referred to as “moon” action but with a little twist. The twist is a quick point guard duck in before using the stagger screen. I like this design because it has actions happening on both sides of the court at the same time, which keeps the help side occupied. Basketball Play - 1-4 High: UCLA Floppy Duck

1-4 High: UCLA Floppy Duck

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 1-4 high alignment. After a wing entry and UCLA screen, the ball is centered and there is an option to use screens on either side for a shooter. If a shot isn’t there off the screen, it’s time for those screeners to seal up for an interior touch. Basketball Play - Crack Down Lob BLOB vs Zone

Crack Down Lob BLOB vs Zone

Matt Hackenberg 12/02/2021

It's baffling to me how often we would score on this simple play. We used it more as a BLOB special, about once every game or so. The less often you run it, the more effective it will be. The counter action, as seen in the diagram and in the embedded video, can also create some decent looks for your team, but that action requires more work once the ball is entered than the initial action. Basketball Play - Drift Ball Screen Reject Hammer

Drift Ball Screen Reject Hammer

Matt Hackenberg 12/02/2021

In this diagram/video we look at a set play to get a three pointer. It’s a hammer action, which were always fun to me as a coach to see executed. Rejecting the side ball screen usually sucks the defense in, and allows for the weak side defender to get pinned in. The embedded video shows the set in more detail. Basketball Play - Sideline Delay Concept

Sideline Delay Concept

Matt Hackenberg 12/01/2021

This "Sideline Delay" diagram and video is designed to control the clock and dictate the pace of the game through your offense. This particular strategy used a spread alignment with an empty sideline for a little twist on the typical 4 corners strategy. I really like the intelligent design of this action with the way the center is used, and all the space that is created for a dynamic driver. The embedded video shows the concept in detail. Basketball Play - Box BS Throwback STS

Box BS Throwback STS

Matt Hackenberg 12/01/2021

It's always nice to have some sets up your sleeve to get your high level shooter a look from the outside when you need it. This set can be one of those play calls. Against teams that get through screens, it should work well as long as the shooter sets a great back screen. Against teams that switch, it's important that the last screener seal their own defender to free up the shooter. Video clip below. Basketball Play - Brush Throwback Lob (Zone Set)

Brush Throwback Lob (Zone Set)

Matt Hackenberg 11/30/2021

I always found this lob set to be creative and effective. I thought having it in the playbook was always valuable because I felt like we could steal an easy basket against zone defense, or at least get a high efficiency shot. Timing is so critical, but if the timing is perfected, this play will be hard to stop. Having your best passer in the position to throw the lob is very important, something I didn't always do a good job of when we ran this set.
