Basketball Play - Motion X

Motion X

Kyle Gilreath 10/24/2013

John Calipari's Kentucky Wildcats ran this motion action during the 2013 Final Four. This is a great set that creates movement and ends with a side pick & roll after a quick pin-down. If 2 can turn the corner and beat X4 there is limited help to the rim; the only option being X5 which could lead to an easy pass to 5 if X3 fails to rotate down as well. Basketball Play - Louisville Cardinals "3"

Louisville Cardinals "3"

Kyle Gilreath 09/26/2013

This is a baseline out of bounds play Rick Pitino's Louisville Cardinals ran during the 2013 Final Four and National Champsionship games. Most teams would stop once the ball was inbounded to 1, not the Cards. 3 quickly stepped into to free up Dieng for a post-up. Basketball Play - Three Point Close Out/1 on 1 Drill

Three Point Close Out/1 on 1 Drill

Randy Brown 12/15/2014

Toughness and execution are the features of this three point close out drill. The goal is for the offensive player to get an open theee point shot at the top of the key. The defender's mission is to take the shot away. If he is successful they play 1 on 1 until a foul, basket, or defensive stop occurs. You can use this as an individual or team drill. It fosters toughness, shot selection and three point accuracy, decision making, closing out, defending and rebounding with two hands. It can add healthy peer pressure to your practices. See More

Basketball Play - Webster Groves Paint Game

Webster Groves Paint Game

Drew Hanlen 11/06/2013

This is a great competitive drill that works on defensive closeouts, catching drives, guarding the ball, getting chest stops, keeping the ball out of the paint, attacking closeouts and driving into the paint under control. I got this drill from my high school coach, Jay Blossom. See More

Basketball Play - Side T

Side T

Kyle Gilreath 10/01/2014

This sideline out of bounds play is one that Eddie Jordan ran while coaching the Washington Wizards. If you need a 3 pter, 2 and 1 are obviously your first options. However, if you just need a simple score, look to hit 5 flashing back to the ball. If 5 can really seal around the rim this is a great look if you have a skilled big. Furthermore, if 5 is forced to catch in the elbow area, another option could be 4 trying to go backdoor for a lay-up. See More

Basketball Play - Drill of the Day: 7 Person Press Drill

Drill of the Day: 7 Person Press Drill

Daniel Murphy 10/21/2013

One of the worst feelings as a coach is watching your team get pressed and turn the ball over. Conversely, when your press is wreaking havoc and you're getting easy buckets off your defense it's a GREAT feeling. If your team is not super athletic and you're playing an athletic team that employs an aggressive full court defense this is a great drill to prepare you for the tempo and speed of your opponent. Basketball Play - Back Tip & Convert

Back Tip & Convert

Kevin Bruinsma 06/28/2013

This is a defensive drill that during my three years at Cleveland State we did a multiple times a week. It incorporates a lot of things and teaches/practices fundamentals while letting the guys get after it and be competetive. The back tip and convert drill allows you to learn how to back tip the ball properly and then transition immediatly into offense so you work on your 2 on 1 breaks. The key to this drill is the back tipper needs to sprint, and tip the ball up with his inside hand. Don't reach, just run the floor and tip the ball. A really great defense to offense drill while teaching a unique skill. See More

Basketball Play - Brooklyn EOG Slob

Brooklyn EOG Slob

Daniel Murphy 12/03/2014

The Nets ran this with under 10 seconds left to go in their game 3 loss to the Bulls. Johnson 2 was wide open, but held off on shooting the three to give the ball to Williams who came off a down screen and penetrated. Chicago did not want to foul, so the Nets were able to get the basket, score, foul, and come down and attempt a game tying 3 pointer. See More

Basketball Play - Game-Like Three-Man Weave

Game-Like Three-Man Weave

Drew Hanlen 04/07/2014

If you're like me, you HATE the traditional three-man weave drill because players don't take it serious, players make bad passes, players travel during the drill and players shoot uncontested lay-ups (which rarely happens in games). Here's two great variations of the three-man weave that are actually game-like and will get your players better! Basketball Play - Single/Double

Single/Double

Basketball HQ 09/16/2012

The single/double screen play is a good set because it doesn’t allow the defense to cheat. There are multiple reads that you can make out of it and this keeps the defense honest. If your shooter is open off of the screens hit him, if the defensive bigs have to help out on the screen look in the post, or let the cutter just catch the ball on the wing and play out of it. Tell your big men to set good screens and then duck in hard. Cutter needs to set his man up and not be predictable on his cut. This play is from the 2007-2008 Chicago Bulls season. See More

Basketball Play - "Horns 2"

"Horns 2"

Luke Riegel 06/23/2014

This is a possible counter action to the traditional "Horns" double high ball screen action. The set is particularly effective if you have guards that are good at moving without the basketball and shooting while coming off screens. The floor spacing allows your guards to read how they are being guarded defensively and to take advantage of curl and fade cuts. See More

Basketball Play - Cone Handle Shots

Cone Handle Shots

Kyle Gilreath 07/24/2013

I love this drill because it works on several components of improvement all at once: Ball Handling: Force your players out of their comfort zone and to dribble lower and quicker each time, that is the only way to improve Footwork: Creating space and finishing with the least amount of dribbles Finishing Through/Over/Around the Defense: This drill consists of a multiple of different types of shots and finishes that are great to add to your players' repertoire. Basketball Play - ZONE OFFENSE - QUICK 3

ZONE OFFENSE - QUICK 3

Jens Hakanowitz 05/23/2014

This zone offense works against a 2-3 zone and creates a quick open look from the 3 point line. Your best shooter has to play the 2 position. Almost at the same time, the big man (4) and the guard (3) have to start. A strong drive by the point guard (1) is necessary to draw the help. A perfect timing is crucial for the outcome of this play. See More

Super combination drill that incorporates offensive seal, post moves, catching, playing through contact and passing. Basketball Play - 444

444

Kyle Gilreath 07/02/2013

444 Is a great defensive drill that involves your entire team. It forces the offensive and defensive teams to stay focused as soon as there is a make/miss or turnover/steal to jump right into your defense and try to create HAVOC. See More
