Favorite Send to FastDrawIn this diagram and embedded video we look at a simple ball screen concept. We used this when we had two attacking guards we wanted to keep out front, allowing them to create by using a ball screen or rejecting into the gap. We wanted to keep shooters in the corners as much as possible. For as simple as the cocnept was, it was fairly effective against good competition. We started to add other options to make the offense less predictable with the zip and DHO options. Video clips below. Favorite Send to FastDrawThis set uses some misdirections to set up a flare screen for our shooter. We want to get the defense watching the ball while we set up a dribble at flare. With the space created by the flare, we want to shoot or attack the close out. Video clip below. Favorite Send to FastDrawWe used a 5 Out pass and cut offense which set up this play perfectly. When the designated shooter got to the top of the key we double-flared the back side and dribbled at the flare screens. We used a numbering system for our personnel - the point guard was the 1, shooting guard was the 2, etc. So I would call "Special 2" to indicate we were running the flare screens for the shooting guard in our system. Favorite Send to FastDrawIn this diagram and embedded video we look closely at a variation of the 5 Out Circle Motion. This variation has a 4 Out, 1 In alignment. I've never actually used the 4 Out version, but I thought it was interesting seeing it on film. I've used the 5-Out version for a number of years, and it's been one of the more fun offenses to develop. Video clip below. Favorite Send to FastDrawOut of our 5 Out alignment we used a set to to bring our 1 off of a double stagger screen. We reverse the ball to our 4, dribble hand off to the 2, and stagger screen on the back side. Developing slipping options out of the stagger would make this set even tougher to guard. Favorite Send to FastDrawWe used this set to overload the baseline against a 3-2 or 2-3 zones. Our objective is to get the ball to the middle, but sometimes the corner three is there if the defense doesn't shift correctly. The timing of 5's seal is key to getting the curl into the middle. Once the ball goes to the middle, there are great opportunities to score or skip the ball. See video clip below. Favorite Send to FastDrawWe used this set against 3-2 and 2-3 zones to screen in the weak side low defender to skip the ball to a shooter. I think it's a nice addition to any zone package if you have a great shooter. Favorite Send to FastDraw"Corners" is our base zone offense against 1-3-1 zone, 3-2 zone, and any type of extended half court or 3/4 court. It provides great spacing to play against any form of trapping defense with the 2-1-2 alignment. Fake passes are critical, as well as not throwing passes with a lot of loft on them. Once in the scoring area, we look to dive our high post and flash to the middle when the ball gets to the corner. Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a very simple concept out of a 3-2 alignment. We simply pass to the wing and cut underneath of the ball. This creates a gap to drive. We want to drive the gap to score or draw the defense to kick. Favorite Send to FastDrawWe used a box set with the same initial action to start each play, and then used a numbering system to decide which option we would use. The series sets up multiple back doors, a rejected ball screen to an empty baseline and a stagger screen. I've had this installed every year I've been a head coach, and it works like a charm. Using the same movement pattern for each play allows you to install one play with five different options. Video clip below. Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a set play out of a horns alignment we use with multiple options. First, we use the alignment to let a playmaker attack and read the defense with the horns ball screen, roll/pop action. We want to play off the ball handler, and if we can't create a shot off the initial attack, look to play 4 around 1 with our big to get it inside. Then we look at a couple simple set options that play off of the base action. Video clip below. Favorite Send to FastDrawThis is a long form play with multiple options from a Princeton alignment and a floppy action to feature a dynamic player. If the player can drive, shoot, post up, finish off the cuts or use a ball screen there are options to do so. We used the play to feature a shooter, but a post up player or a driver could also be used, just different options would need to be emphasized.
