In this diagram and video clip we see a back cut on the gate screen action. I think this action is best paired in series with using the gate screen, using the gate screen and then slipping a screener, and some option after entering to the corner. So if I didn't have a gate screen series installed, I would think about this as a play to draw up in a timeout, or a rare special sitatution SLOB you don't use very often at all. Video clip below. In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB set to try to steak a quick bucket. With a solid screen by 1 against a defense that gets through screens, this can work. I like that 1 is the player setting the back screen, loosening up the defense so that they can go catch the ball if the lob isn't there. The lob pass is critical, so you want a trusted passer to making the decision to throw the lob or not. Video clip below. The 21 series is usually a 3-player action that happens right out of transition. The bunch action makes the options easy to disguise, almost like play action fakes in football. There are a variety of actions that can come from this series, and they all develop quickly, making them ideal for teams that want to play with a fast tempo. This set uses some misdirections to set up a flare screen for our shooter. We want to get the defense watching the ball while we set up a dribble at flare. We used a 5 Out pass and cut offense which set up this play perfectly. When the designated shooter got to the top of the key we double-flared the back side and dribbled at the flare screens. We used a numbering system for our personnel - the point guard was the 1, shooting guard was the 2, etc. So I would call "Special 2" to indicate we were running the flare screens for the shooting guard in our system. In this diagram and embedded video we look closely at a variation of the 5 Out Circle Motion. This variation has a 4 Out, 1 In alignment. I've never actually used the 4 Out version, but I thought it was interesting seeing it on film. Out of our 5 Out alignment we used a set to to bring our 1 off of a double stagger screen. We reverse the ball to our 4, dribble hand off to the 2, and stagger screen on the back side. Developing slipping options out of the stagger would make this set even tougher to guard. This is a very simple concept out of a 3-2 alignment. We simply pass to the wing and cut underneath of the ball. This creates a gap to drive. We used a box set with the same initial action to start each play, and then used a numbering system to decide which option we would use. The series sets up multiple back doors, a rejected ball screen to an empty baseline and a stagger screen. I've had this installed every year I've been a head coach, and it works like a charm. Using the same movement pattern for each play allows you to install one play with five different options. Video clip below. This is a set play out of a horns alignment we use with multiple options. First, we use the alignment to let a playmaker attack and read the defense with the horns ball screen, roll/pop action. We want to play off the ball handler, and if we can't create a shot off the initial attack, look to play 4 around 1 with our big to get it inside. This is a long form play with multiple options from a Princeton alignment and a floppy action to feature a dynamic player. We modify our dribble drive attack from 4 Out to 5 Out and use passing and cutting to create double gaps to drive. This action works best against pressure man defense and allows for tempo control by the offense. I love the offense from a developmental standpoint, teaching cutting, catching, passing and pivoting.
