An action I saw a lot this past weekend. Slipping the 4 man (Someone who is a good shooter) and then he becomes the replace guy on the big roll is a tough action for the defense to guard because it forces the guy guarding 5 to really defend the ball screen well. Thursday night in a heated PAC-12 battle California's Mike Montgomery drew up this quick hitting back door action to attack Oregon's overplaying defense. Cal's Junior Guard Allen Crabbe has had one heck of a stretch lately of offensive games so Oregon really started denying the ball; or at least making it hard for him to catch. California came out of a timeout last night to take advantage of such over-aggressive defense. This is a great action to run because you occupy all of your help with the stagger opposite. See More

For this play your point guard has to be able to shoot off of a double screen or you can run your best shooter at the point for this play like the Rockets did with Kevin Martin. Your player has to read the defense on the back screen he can use a UCLA cut or a back cut depending on how the defense is playing him. This is a play that the Spurs love to run that features a "snug" pick-and-roll between Tony Parker and Tiago Splitter. The pick-and-roll action between these two is deadly - Splitter is one of the best roll men in the league - but just in case the defense can bottle it up (which is rare), the Spurs have some sweet weakside action that can punish the defense even if they do everything right. Your 2 man has to act like he is cutting to the opposite corner and using 5 as a screen. Your 5 has to post hard so he is occupying his defender. You have to make sure that you utilize the weak side flare action so there is no help side defense coming from 4's man when 2 curls. See More
