Basketball Play - Zipper Twist

Zipper Twist

Kyle Gilreath 05/31/2013

There is no better way to end the week than with one last zipper action from the Indiana Pacers. They ran this play versus the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the ECF. The Pacers have had much success in pick & roll situations finding Hibbert on the role for points in the paint. This is an excellent way to set up a pick & roll for Hibbert. By placing a shooter (3) in the corner it makes helping on the roll of 5 harder because if the defense sags in a talented point guard will throw back to 3 for a shot. See More

Basketball Play - High Post Isolation

High Post Isolation

Dana Beszczynski 05/30/2013

This was a nice action run by John Beilein against the Syracuse 2-3 Zone On the wing pass, the Zone is forced to make decisions on priority coverage In this situation, x4 got caught and 5 was able to hit 4 on the baseline for an easy lay-up - in the next sequence when this play was run, the defense adjusts, but this time 5 is free for an elbow jumper See More

Basketball Play - 2 Ball 1 Ball Offense/Defense

2 Ball 1 Ball Offense/Defense

Daniel Murphy 05/30/2013

This is a challenging yet fun drill. You can set up a scoring system with rewards/consequences. Many ball handling drills follow a predictable pattern and do not involve a live defense. This drill causes the offense to make reads or create openings while at a slight disadvantage of dribble two balls. The defender must decide how aggressive they want to be in reaching for a steal, while maintaining balance and control of a basketball. See More

Basketball Play - Zipper 3

Zipper 3

John Leonzo 05/29/2013

Here is a zipper set that is run to get the ball in the hands of your best decision maker (1 in this play) and gives you plenty of scoring oppertunities. The spurs run a variation of this play with much success by putting Parker at the 1. Ginobli at the 2 (who can get a 3 on the extra pass from 3) and Danny Green at the 3. The skills of these players puts a lot of stress on the defense and makes this quick hitter hard to guard. See More

Basketball Play - Louisville Pick N' Pop Counter

Louisville Pick N' Pop Counter

Kevin Bruinsma 05/29/2013

The 2013 NCAA National Champion Louisville Cardinals ran this play a ton throughout their NCAA Tournament run. They utilized #10 Gorgui Dieng's ability to be mobile and make open mid-range jumpers in every single round in the NCAA Tournament. After running a ball screen at the top of the key and throwing the ball back to the 4 man. #3 Peyton Siva would come down in the middle of the lane and set the down screen for #10 Dieng. As this was happening #11 Luke Hancock the Louisville 3 man would move into position to set a baseline screen for #10 Dieng. He now had the option based on the opponent's defense to come off the Gut screen from #3 Siva or the baseline screen set by #11 Hancock. In most cases he came off the gut screen and hit an elbow jumper. See More

Basketball Play - Flat

Flat

Kyle Gilreath 05/29/2013

This is a baseline out of bounds play that I ran for my Junior Varsity squad this past season. I initially drew it up figuring it would work well versus man defense. However, as the season progressed, I found that this play worked almost every time against a zone (especially 2-3) zone. It takes some time to teach younger players how to screen in different situations but my 5's become great at sealing under the rim and almost always resulted in a lay-up. See More

Basketball Play - Schrempf Shooting

Schrempf Shooting

Daniel Murphy 05/29/2013

Saw Detlef Schrempf demo this on Youtube. It's one of my favorite shooting drills near the basket because it requires good footwork. If a player knows how to position their body and use their feet to set up a drop step, hook, and up and under they should be able to score near the basket. After catching and drop stepping, player 1 continues curling around the cone and catching a pass. The next shot is a catch and shoot hook. The third shot is and up and under. The fourth shot is if a player is denied a pass in the post they spins away from the defense for the lob pass. After getting the footwork down without defense then dummy defense should be applied. The defense should over play to allow the offense player to get a feel for the reads. As an offensive players skill and comfort level increases with the dummy defense, then the defense should increase their intensity. See More

Basketball Play - Quick Rip

Quick Rip

Kyle Gilreath 05/23/2013

The Miami Heat ran this Quick Hitter last night versus the Indiana Pacers which gave them two different looks throughout the game. Norris Cole did an excellent job creating an angle towards the rim. This made the defense shift to help in the paint an opened up both looks. See More

NBA Play of the Day May 20: New York Knicks Horns Double

Kyle Gilreath 05/20/2013

The New York Knicks ran this play during their playoff loss versus the Indiana Pacers Saturday night in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. There are severals aspects I love about this play. 1. I love running staggered pick & rolls (especially at lower levels) because most coaches do not teach their players how to guard. **I teach the first big to level the screen to prevent the slip and the second big to be the hedger/trapper/helper. 2. By using Carmelo in the first pick, the defense did not want to detach itself for too long and giveaway a look from the Knicks' best player. 3. The Knicks spaced two shooters in the corners (2-JR Smith, 4-Copeland) which made it difficult to help on this action and give up an open corner three. See More

NBA Play of the Day May 17: New York Knicks 15 Power

Kyle Gilreath 05/17/2013

In an attempt to get Amar'e Stoudamire going during his limited minutes, Mike Woodson had the New York Knicks ran this post-up action several times last night in their win over the Indiana Pacers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. Spreading the floor our the way the Knicks did made this action difficult to run and would be an excellent option if you have a dominant post player on your team. By using Jason Kidd to set the screen on Stoudemire, you make the defense make a decision to switch or help and recover. In my opinion, switching is not even an option. By helping and recovering, the defense arrives late and allows the post player to catch and make a move towards the rim quicker. See More
