Basketball Play - Houston Rockets Fist Up Fist Out

Houston Rockets Fist Up Fist Out

Craig LeVasseur 05/12/2015

Even when the Rockets weren't punishing the Mavericks in round one with the Josh Smith-Dwight Howard pick and roll combination, they still found ways to take advantage of the defense and connect for lobs. This is a simple 1-4 high pick, with a throwback to Smith. He immediately goes into Side P/R action with James Harden, or DHO in this case. This is hard work for x4, Dirk, who shows hard on the DHO. Note the 1 and 3 switching spots on the weakside, which makes x1, JJ Barea, the low defender. As Harden hits Smith on the roll, x5 must pull over to stop the drive. JJ Barea is sitting on Howard's top leg like he is supposed to be, but that hardly matters. This is an easy Smith to Howard lob. See More

Basketball Play - Houston Rockets Elbow Get

Houston Rockets Elbow Get

Craig LeVasseur 05/12/2015

Houston used this play multiple times in the 1st round series against the Dallas Mavericks. Josh Smith and Dwight Howard posed massive problems defensively for the Mavericks with this play. Dwight Howard slipped or rolled hard for multiple lobs, sealed x4 when the defense switched, and even sealed on a switch and then spun out again for a lob. Add in Josh Smith's ability to finish with his running left hook in the lane, and this play caused fits for the defense. See More

Basketball Play - Houston Rockets Turn 4 Flare

Houston Rockets Turn 4 Flare

Craig LeVasseur 05/12/2015

Houston used this play in the 1st Round of the NBA Playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks for a Josh Smith to Dwight Howard lob. This simple Turn 4 set gives Smith good positioning for a post up, and the flare option for Trevor Ariza is always available to keep the defense honest. A 4-5 pick and roll is a difficult enough play to defend, but moving the screen down to the block confuses the coverages even more than usual. In this play the defense commited to the pick and roll too soon, and Howard spun out of the pick for a lob pass. See More

Basketball Play - Houston Rockets Big-Big Drag

Houston Rockets Big-Big Drag

Craig LeVasseur 05/12/2015

This is a very basic early offense option that Houston used against Dallas in the 1st round of the NBA Playoffs. The drag screen typically involves the point guard and one or both bigs, but here Josh Smith is the ballhandler and coming off of a screen from Dwight Howard to his strong left hand. The NBA 4 man is not used to defending the ballhandler in a P/R, and Howard rolls hard to the rim always looking for a lob, making this an extremely difficult cover for the defense. Shooters are spread in the corners to limit the ability of help defenders. See More

Basketball Play - Wisco On-Ball Flare

Wisco On-Ball Flare

Kevin Bruinsma 05/11/2015

In this specific play Wisconsin made a modification to the common roll & replace ball screen set in which the 4/5 set a ball screen then roll to the rim while the other big lifts to the top of the key replacing him. This makes it tough for the defense to keep somebody in the hole to defend the roll guy. In this Wisconsin ball screen set after Frank Kaminsky sets the ball screen and begins to roll, the 4 man Nigel Hayes screens in for Kaminsky who flares to the wing. With Kaminsky’s man defending the ball screen and retreating quickly to get back to him, Hayes’ defender is in help side to pick up the rolling Kaminsky. Hayes is able to create a deep screening angle to pin Kaminsky’s defender in freeing him up for a wide open jump shot. This small variation was very effective as Kentucky’s bigs were more used to covering the traditional roll and replace action with Kaminsky rolling to the rim, and Hayes replacing him. See More

Basketball Play - Kentucky Side On-Ball Sets

Kentucky Side On-Ball Sets

Kevin Bruinsma 05/02/2015

The first video clip is a simple side ball screen with a double screen on the weak side of the floor. The interesting thing about this action is the spacing UK uses on the weak side of the floor. The double screen is set just inside of the three-point line which is more commonly seen in NBA sets where defenses have to play tighter to their man due to everyone on the floor being able to make shots. Kentucky ends up getting a lay-up in the post out of this action as Wisconsin can’t over help with the double screen being right below the 3-point line. The second video clip is a ball screen set at the top of the key to an open side of the floor. If the guard can’t attack the open space he throws back to the popping 4 man who looks for his own shot. On his catch the 3 man that’s stacked up with the 5 man slams 5’s defender so 4 has a straight line pass to 5 sealing in the lane. The deep post catch forced Wisconsin to double down and left UK’s guard wide open for a 3-point shot. See More

Basketball Play - Los Angeles Clippers "Horns Seal Leak"

Los Angeles Clippers "Horns Seal Leak"

Gibson Pyper 04/30/2015

Doc Rivers loves to get Chris Paul & Blake Griffin in a Post Pick & Roll situation to put the defense in a tough situation. Out of this set, they ran a counter late against the San Antonio Spurs to get Chris Paul moving and attacking off a double screen. Instead of setting a flex screen and then sealing his man for a post up, Paul leaks out and receives a dribble handoff from Blake Griffin and attacks off a ballscreen from DeAndre Jordan. See More

Basketball Play - Chicago Bulls "ATO Wing Dive"

Chicago Bulls "ATO Wing Dive"

Gibson Pyper 04/30/2015

Down late against Milwaukee, Bulls coach Thibodeau called a great After Time Out set to get Mirotic a wide open 3 point look. Initially on the wing, 1 passes to 3 who quickly flips it back to him and clears to opposite wing. 5 then steps up and sets a ballscreen for 5 who attacks to the corner, 5 dives to the rim, as this action occurs 4 sneaks up and pops to the lane line extended area for replace action to take advantage of help defense from the Bucks. Basketball Play - 1 on 1 Rooftop

1 on 1 Rooftop

Randy Sherman 04/29/2015

The drill introduces the rooftop concept and 1 on 1 on the ball defense. It can and should be run on both sides of the floor with larger groups, but is depicted only on one side of the floor in this diagram. On-the-ball defenders keep heels on the rooftop and influence ball handler to sideline checkpoint. Establish the proper stance angle, drag hand and lead hand. When offensive player reaches the sideline checkpoint they reverse pivot and heads back up the rooftop. The goal as the ball heads back up the rooftop is to prevent the ball handler from busting through the rooftop. See More

Basketball Play - 3 on 3 on Top (Cut & Fill)

3 on 3 on Top (Cut & Fill)

Randy Sherman 04/27/2015

3 on 3 on Top (Cut & Fill) The objective of this drill is to introduce the pressure man defensive fundamentals of jumping to the pass, denying centering passes, moving to help and stance integrity. It is a basic drill that can be used to teach defending several actions, begin with cut and fill opposite action by the three offensive players. Emphasis #1 - JUMP TO THE PASS and defend the basket cut when ball goes from point to wing Emphasis #2 - On the flight of the pass from point to wing, the weakside wing defender gets to help position on the lane line Emphasis #3 - Help defenders...DO NOT allow the cutter to cross your face and catch at the nail Emphasis #4 - Deny and force your man to catch going away from the basket with their back to the rim. Place special emphasis on denying the wing-to-point centering pass. If a wing-to-point centering pass is knocked away with the outside had, reward the defense by rotating them out of the drill immediately. See More

Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavaliers "Wing Double"

Cleveland Cavaliers "Wing Double"

Gibson Pyper 04/23/2015

To open the second half of Game 2 the Cavs ran a really nice Double Ballscreen on the wing. Kevin Love set a down screen for LeBron who then set a ballscreen for Kyrie, at the same time Love turns and sets a ballscreen as well. What I love about this set is when Kyrie clears both ballscreens, LeBron dives to the rim & Love pops to the wing creating chaos for the defense. They have to defend Kyrie attacking, LeBron on the roll or Love at the rim for a 3. The opposite big is forced to help and Mozgov is available in the slot weakside & JR Smith is spacing the floor on the weakside as well. One of my favorite sets Blatt has run this year. See More

Basketball Play - San Antonio Spurs "Zipper Backdoor"

San Antonio Spurs "Zipper Backdoor"

Gibson Pyper 04/23/2015

Late in Overtime of a thrilling Game 2, the Spurs ran a great backdoor play to get Kawhi a layup and essentially seal the victory. The Spurs run alot of Zipper action and this was setup by Kawhi baiting his man on the high side trying to prevent the pass up top, allowing him to cut backdoor. Notice on the weakside Duncan sets a weakside screen for Green (their common "Hammer" action) keeping the defense occupied and allowing for a shot if the defense overhelps. See More
