Basketball Play - QH - PNR High

QH - PNR High

Keith MacPherson 11/20/2019

This play is a simple PNR to be used against denial defense. The high PNR, as well as the secondary back screen open up the middle and force the weak side wing player to decide between defending the layup and leaving their check unguarded or staying with their check and giving up an easy two. Ideally, this play should have a finisher in the 2 spot and a shooter in the 3, as well as the best screener in the 5 spot. The play can obviously be run on either side, but playing to the strengths of your players is always to your advantage. On the women's team where we run this play, our 3 has a great baseline shot, so this is the ideal setup for us. Good screens will make this play successful...as long as you don't use it too often. Teach your team to focus on sprinting to the screens and running off them properly to create better separation and you will find yourself getting wide open shots on a regular basis. Enjoy! See More

Basketball Play - Spain - Spain PNR BLOB

Spain - Spain PNR BLOB

Zachary Weir 09/11/2019

This is a very well executed BLOB by the Spanish Men's National Team. A 1-5 spread PNR, between Ricky Rubio and Willy Hernangomez, where Spain executes the "Spain " action leading to an open look. The designed back screen or "Spain " action is set by a shooter and forces the defense to make some tough decisions. See video clip below. ----- Blog Post: The Evolution of Spain PNR Action See More

Basketball Play - Team USA - PNR Twist vs Zone

Team USA - PNR Twist vs Zone

Matt Wheeler 09/11/2019

Team USA used multiple strategies to try to combat the zone defense that Turkey played throughout most of their World Cup game. In this play the two ball screens resulted in Kemba Walker (1) being matched up against a post player in the middle of Turkey's zone. On the first ball screen from 4, x1 fought through the screen to get back matched up with 1. 4 cut to the wing to occupy x2 and keep him from providing help on the second screen. When 1 dribbled off the screen from 5 to the middle of the floor, he was able to attack x5 one on one fand use his quickness advantage to get a basket. Basketball Play - Team USA - Swing DHO Floppy vs Zone

Team USA - Swing DHO Floppy vs Zone

Matt Wheeler 09/09/2019

Team USA basketball faced a zone defense for much of their game against Turkey in the FIBA World Cup. They were down 1 late in overtime and ran this play to get a shot for Joe Harris (3) off of some movement. This is a common play that Gregg Popovich uses with the Spurs against man defense. They made some adjustments to run this as an effective play against Turkey's 2-3 zone defense. 1 reversed the ball to 5. Then 5 went into a dribble handoff with 2. but didn't need to set a good screen on x2. This allowed x2 to get through the screen and shift out of the wing area to matchup with 2 up top. 5 then screened x4 on the outside of the zone to get 3 open. This essentially forced Turkey to matchup man to man with x4 having to guard 3. x4 trailed on the screen and 3 was able to turn the corner on the catch and drive to the basket. See More

Basketball Play - 2v1 Help Side and Box Out

2v1 Help Side and Box Out

Dymetrius Ware 08/13/2019

This is an awesome drill for stations during practice. Players are working on coming off a guarded player and getting to help position and stopping the ball. If the offense gets a shot off, defense must get back and box out the offensive player coming from the weak side (original matchup). See full instructions below. See More

Basketball Play - Minnesota Timberwolves - 51 Back Cut SLOB

Minnesota Timberwolves - 51 Back Cut SLOB

Matt Barnthouse 08/01/2019

This is a great play for teams with bigs that can pass and guards that can finish around the rim. There are two ways to go on this play. The initial off ball elevator screen from the 5 to the 1 opens up a potential direct three-point opportunity. However, on this play, Derrick Rose (1) recognizes the open space and makes a back cut straight to the rim. The inbounder Wiggins (3) passes to Karl-Anthony Towns (5), who immediately throws a boune pass to Derrick Rose (1) who already has momentum towards rim. Now, on this specific play Rose is met at the rim by a help defender because the 4 is Taj Gibson, who cannot shoot the three, and can be easily left in the corner. If you are lucky enough to have a 4 that can shoot, then this is an even higher percentage shot, as the help defense will stay with the shooter. If not, there's an opportunity for a kickout corner three. The defense can't do both. Spacing opens up so much opportunity for an offense! Despite the help defense, Rose has the momentum to make a quick move and score the layup. Having players that know how to keep their momentum when cutting towards a pass can be deadly!
