Basketball Play - Knicks Triple Flat

Knicks Triple Flat

Adam Spinella 07/11/2013

The Knicks ran this play in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Pacers at the end of a quarter. The play was designed to get a J.R. Smith and Carmelo Anthony ballscreen in space. The play was probably designed for Carmelo to pop off the screen and isolate on the wing; instead Chandler was wide open at the rim and Melo hit him for an alley oop. See More

Basketball Play - Rub Pop Dirk

Rub Pop Dirk

Adam Spinella 07/11/2013

This was a play run at one time by the Dallas Mavericks in their 2011 NBA Championship run. The plan was to get Dirk and Kidd in a ballscreen read situation where Dirk could isolate at one of two spots on the floor and have proper spacing around him. See More

Basketball Play - Utah Handoff Curl-Slip

Utah Handoff Curl-Slip

Adam Spinella 07/19/2013

This Sideline out of Bounds play was run by the Utah Jazz under the leadership of Jerry Sloan. Sloan used a handoff/ downscreen curl simultaneously to get the ball into a cutting big man, who would usually get to the free throw line as a result of this play. There are many options for a layup or a shot in a very brief amount of action; all around one of the better side-out plays I've seen. See More

Basketball Play - Pin Reverse Fade

Pin Reverse Fade

Adam Spinella 07/22/2013

Kevin Stallings and Vanderbilt have run this play for a few seasons, most notably with Festus Ezeli during the 2011-2012 season. As a four guard set it opens up the lane for a screening big man to slip to the rim and for guards to get many good shooting looks. See More

Basketball Play - Center Trip HO

Center Trip HO

Adam Spinella 08/03/2013

Center Trip DHO is a play used by Mike Woodson and the New York Knicks to get either Raymond Felton attacking the rim or Tyson Chandler open on a lob. The Knicks use the extra attention given by defenses to Carmelo Anthony as a decoy, and the valuable shooting skills of J.R. Smith and Steve Novak as an opportunity to space the floor on one side of the court. See More

Basketball Play - 08 Raptors Backdoor Find

08 Raptors Backdoor Find

Adam Spinella 08/20/2013

In 2008, Jay Triano drew this play for a high handoff with Chris Bosh, who would likely pop out and set a ballscreen. Instead, the play worked out so that Bosh's presence with the ball would serve as a decoy for an off-ball player to cut backdoor and receive a pass from the man Bosh pitches the ball to. See More

Basketball Play - Wheels (SLOB)

Wheels (SLOB)

Adam Spinella 09/06/2013

In late game situations when you need a three pointer, Wheels is a good double screen set that frees up your shooter. When 1 comes off a double ball screen, he has room to stretch out the play on the perimeter, which allowed the double pindown to open up a shooter. 3 is the designed shooter in this scenario. Basketball Play - Gamecock Spread

Gamecock Spread

Adam Spinella 09/13/2013

Frank Martin and the South Carolina Gamecocks use this basic motion format at times as part of their "Spread" attack. The Gamecocks usually play with four guards under Martin, although the motion sets itself okay if the 4 is also a big man. The idea of the offense isn't to penetrate the defense through dribbling, but through getting an overload on one side in order to clear the opposite for a two-man game. See More

Basketball Play - Zip 54 Rub

Zip 54 Rub

Adam Spinella 11/07/2013

This play was run by the New Orleans Pelicans on their opening night against the Indiana Pacers. Zip 54 Rub is designed to get Anthony Davis an open wing jumper, using his athleticism and comfort on the perimeter to throw off his post defender. Most post defenders aren't used to going over handoffs or screens, and this pattern that Davis runs forces them to do so. See More
