Basketball Play - Push Zip Iverson Series

Push Zip Iverson Series

Matt Hackenberg 11/23/2021

This is a series of plays that all originate out of the same basic movement pattern. The movement pattern masks the outcome of the play to help against teams that are well prepared through scouting. The series of plays is designed to feature a dynamic soring point guard. The push zip iverson action helps create safe movement against teams that like to pressure. I like the series of plays because it allows for creativity from a dynamic player (the side ball screen), looks for cheap points (blind pig and backdoor), and gets a shooter a a good look for three in a crafty way. Basketball Play - 1-2-2 Zone Offense: Stagger Slip

1-2-2 Zone Offense: Stagger Slip

Matt Hackenberg 11/24/2021

This is a zone set using a 1-2-2 alignment. I love the play because if nothing materializes, you are left with a 1-3-1 alignment that plays well against most zones. The ball is entered to the wing, and the wing uses a drag dribble down the sideline to shift the defense. The ball is returned to 1 who dribbles to the other side of the court while reading the defense. The action is a stagger screen with a slip into the middle of the defense. Our primary look is the slip to the middle, but we would take the stagger if the defense didn't cover it. Getting the slip in the middle opens up many options for the offense - shot, kick down, kick out. See More

Basketball Play - 2-Up Press Breaker

2-Up Press Breaker

Matt Hackenberg 11/30/2021

This is honestly the only press breaker I've ever used as a coach. It's so versatile, working well against whatever style of pressure if presented. We don't have to have different concepts installed for man and zone presses, or softer presses and harder presses . The press breaker is built on proper spacing, allows for safe reversals, but also has options to attack up the court against any style of press defense. We absolutely roasted diamond presses using the sideline entry of this press breaker. I like having 2-up, as we had help to get the ball inbounded if needed but it wasn't as congested as bringing 4-up or 3-up agianst presses. The video below will absolutely break down everything in the diagram to be easily understood. Basketball Play - Zip Pin Duck

Zip Pin Duck

Matt Hackenberg 12/01/2021

In this set we go back to the interior for a set play designed to get a scoring post a touch on the block. The set uses a little misdirection by dribble pushing the entry away from where the post up will materialize. The dribble push triggers a zipper cut, and the ball is swung to a player receiving a pin down screen to be open. The post who pins down, then seals up for the post entry. Basketball Play - Sideline Delay Concept

Sideline Delay Concept

Matt Hackenberg 12/01/2021

This "Sideline Delay" diagram and video is designed to control the clock and dictate the pace of the game through your offense. This particular strategy used a spread alignment with an empty sideline for a little twist on the typical 4 corners strategy. I really like the intelligent design of this action with the way the center is used, and all the space that is created for a dynamic driver. The embedded video shows the concept in detail. Basketball Play - "Gaps" Conceptual Zone Offense

"Gaps" Conceptual Zone Offense

Matt Hackenberg 12/03/2021

In today’s diagram and embedded video we look at a zone offense scheme we called “Gaps.” We simply aligned in a 1-3-1 and used concepts to attack zone defense. We used this as our base zone offense, meaning when we saw zone, we automatically went to this concept unless I overrode it with another call. The concpet is very simple, and the details of execution are what's going to make or break the success of this concept. I liked to use this, and pair it with a set package of 4-5 plays as our zone offense playbook. Swing Pin Gap

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play for a gap drive. I like this set and think it is unique in how it is designed. In my opinion, gap drive concepts are always in demand by coaches. Basketball Play - 1-4 High: UCLA Floppy Duck

1-4 High: UCLA Floppy Duck

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 1-4 high alignment. After a wing entry and UCLA screen, the ball is centered and there is an option to use screens on either side for a shooter. If a shot isn’t there off the screen, it’s time for those screeners to seal up for an interior touch. Basketball Play - 4 Out: DHO Back Screen Cross Screen

4 Out: DHO Back Screen Cross Screen

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a set play out of a 4 Out transition that creates a guard cross screening for a post. I like how the back screen frees up the post player to catch the ball in prime position to read the cross screen. Basketball Play - 41 Loop

41 Loop

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

Getting space for penetration can lead to wonderful things, as we explore in this simple diagram and embedded video. Today we look at a simple movement pattern to create space for a driver to finish at the rim, or kick to a shooter. Sometimes us coaches overcomplicate things. Getting your best driver in some space to attack can be enough at times. Basketball Play - Shallow Brush

Shallow Brush

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we have an option for using a brush screen to get a dynamic driver a gap to penetrate. If this play is well timed, it will create an advantage for the offense. I like the simplicity and the spacing. I like that it can create an advantage quickly, and doesn't require a lot of players to handle the ball. Basketball Play - EOQ: Elbow Pin

EOQ: Elbow Pin

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at an end of quarter set play to get a three-point shot for a shooter. Consider this play to end periods taking the final shot, while getting the shot you want for your team. It works consistently, and manages ghe end of quarter situations so they don't end up hurting your team.
