Loyola Chicago runs this elbow action to get its 4 the ball to attack in a middle ball screen. 1 passes to 4 at the elbow then screens for 3. 3 cuts to the weak side leaving 1 as the only player on the right side of the floor, forcing his defender to provide help on 5 rolling to the basket. 4 looks to create a shot for himself, pass to 5 on the roll to the basket or hit 1 filling behind the play on the wing. The Ramblers have great ball movement within their set offense but they also excel in their passing when the plays break down. They do an excellent job of attacking the paint and drawing a second defender to them. When they pass it out they create a "One More" pass situation. In these situations the offensive player receiving the first pass usually has a chance to score but by making an immediate extra pass they get their teammate an even better scoring opportunity. The Boston Celtics were struggling to get a basket early in game 3 against the Cleveland Cavaliers so they ran this play to get Al Horford (4) isolated in a one-on-one situation at the free throw line. The Cleveland Cavaliers have taken a page out of the playbook from LeBron James' time with the Miami Heat to put him in a situation where he can attack the basket and create out of a ball screen. The pindown screen for 1 and the pass back to James (3) sets 1 up for the flare screen. x5 has to stay back on the flare screen from 5 to protect against a layup from 1. After missing a shot to take the lead in the final seconds of its game against Argentina, the USA Men's World Cup Qualifying Team found themselves in an end-of-game BLOB situation. They were down 1 with one second left in the game. Head Coach Jeff Van Gundy called a timeout to draw up this play to take advantage of a common late-game defensive tactic of switching all screens. 2 curls around 3 to force the defensive switch. Tennessee State was down 2 late in the second half of their game against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) and needed a basket to tie the game. They ran this wrinkle out of their spread offense to get a dunk off a lob pass. Here is one of Wofford's go-to plays to get their leading scorer, Fletcher Magee, open off of screens in order to utilize his quick release. Magee (2) makes a slow cut under the basket to set himself up for a baseline screen. 1 dribbles off of the ball screen from 4 and passes to him up top. Virginia uses a pick and roll continuity set that provides multiple opportunities for ball screens in a single possession. 1 dribbles off the ball screen looking for 5 rolling to the basket. If he isn’t available, 1 immediately passes to 4 up top. 4 looks for a quick pass to 5 continuing his cut to the rim. This is extremely effective against teams that hard hedge because x5 now has to sprint back to the paint to take away the layup. If 4 doesn’t have anything he will reverse the ball to one of the perimeter players. Just like in their motion offense, Virginia gives their players freedom to make decisions in this play. Most of the time 2 will make a backdoor cut, then 4 will follow his pass to 3 with a ball screen. This action can run continuously on both sides of the floor until they get the shot they want.
