Coach Joyner used this play against Manhattan on Tuesday night. Since the Jaspers pressed and zoned so much, it was rare that we got to see some man actions from the Pirates. Also, it was rare to see offense ran past the initial actions by either team due to the fast paced nature of both teams. On some dead ball situations and out-of-bounds plays, Manhattan matched up man to man. In this baseline out-of-bounds play, Hampton uses a misdirection by the 4 man to leave the ball-side corner open for 3 to cut to. If open, 3 will take the shot in the corner. If he isn't open, 3 dribbles towards the middle of the floor as 4 starts his sequence of down screens. The first down screen is set for 1 on the opposite wing. Butler Point Flare

Butler used this play mid-way through the second half and got a good look on dribble penetration after the flare screen. The play starts with dribble entry to the right as 2 and 3 switch sides of the floor. The first scoring option is 3 in the corner for a shot. If that isn't open, 1 passes to 4 at the opposite elbow. From here, 4 can shoot if open or take his man to the basket. The third scoring option is to pass to 1 flaring to the wing. If the flare isn't open, the Butler guards put the ball on the floor and drive baseline. At the same time, 5 takes his defender out of the play by posting up under the basket. See More

Butler ATO Down Stagger

Butler used this play after a timeout near the end of the game against Texas to get Dunham in a position to drive off of a staggered screen. The play starts with the point guard dribbling to the right as Dunham cuts off of a down-screen from 5. Once Dunham has the ball, 4 and 5 set up a staggered high ball-screen. In the game, Dunham turned down the staggered screen and drove to the basket forcing Texas to foul on the penetration. See More

LSU SLOB Cross Up

LSU used this play in the first half against NC State. On the sideline, LSU lines up with Hornsby in the corner (3). 1 passes the ball into 4 then 4 dribbles across the floor and passes back to 1. Hornsby then sets a cross-screen for 5. 4 sets a down screen for Hornsby who cuts up to the top of the key for a 3-point shot. It looks like LSU needs to keep finding Hornsby to stay in this game. NC State BLOB Double Loop

NC State used this BLOB play in the second half against LSU. The play is meant to get a 3-point shot by running 2 off of a double screen at the free-throw line. However, NC State makes a good read and the point guard takes his man to the basket after 3 clears to the opposite side of the floor. 1 drives to the basket and forces LSU to foul on the penetration. New Mexico State Horns Slip

New Mexico State used this play early in the first half against Kansas. The play resulted with a foul on Kansas, but the Aggies are showing quality actions to get open post-ups and shots. The play starts with the point guard dribbling to the right as if he is going to use the ball-screen from 4. Instead, 4 slips the screen to the opposite block. 1 uses the ball-screen from 5 and looks for 4 posting up inside. If 4 isn't open, 1 looks to pass to 2 cutting up off of a down screen from 5. New Mexico State Box Pinch Post

New Mexico State is staying in the game by being patient on offense and waiting for open shots. In this box set play, the guards start at the elbows with 2 screening down for 4. 5 and 3 then screen the screener with a double screen on the opposite block. Now the point guard has the option to hit 2 for a shot on the wing or pass to 4 at the pinch post. In the game, 4 got the ball and looked to drive to the basket after 1 cut through the lane. Kansas Zone Lob

Kansas ran this play in the second half against New Mexico State. The play uses a dribble entry from Mason (1) from left to right. The dribble pushes Oubre (3) to the corner and sends Seldon (2) into the lane and back out to the perimeter. Mason passes to Seldon shifting the defense towards the ball. Oubre sneaks in behind the defense as 4 and 5 screen the bottom zone defenders. In the game, Seldon made the lob pass to Oubre with Oubre missing the dunk, but a good idea by Bill Self. See More

UNI High Stack

Northern Iowa has been running some great sets in the game against Wyoming. In this play, UNI gets to an overload out of a high stack set. The point guard dribbles left as 4 cuts down into the low post. The initial scoring look is to try to hit 4 on the cut or posting up. If nothing is there, the ball is reversed and 4 sets a back-screen for 3 on the wing. 5 screens the screener (4), and 2 has two options to pass to for a shot. See More

Miami Hurricanes Horns Hi/Lo Options

Here are two hi/lo options out of the horns set from Miami. Miami is playing well in the NIT with a chance to advance to the finals with a win over Temple. In these options, the Hurricanes use a horns staggered screen with the point guard dribbling from left to right. In the first option, 4 rolls and 5 sets a pin down for 3 in the corner. Once 3 gets the ball he looks to pass inside to 5 or to 4 flashing high post for a hi/lo look. In the second option, 4 sets a flare-screen for 5 before cutting to the block. If 5 isn't open on the screen, he sets a screen for 3 who gets the ball at the top of the key. 3 again looks at 5 or to 4 flashing high. See More

Here is a 1-4 high zipper ball-screen play from Kentucky. The play begins with a dribble entry to the right wing pushing the ball-side guard down to the block to make a zipper cut off of 4. Once 2 has the ball, 5 sets a ball-screen. 2 attacks from right to left as 5 rolls to the basket and 4 replaces 5. 2 also has the option to pass to 3 in the corner if 3's defender helps on dribble penetration. Kentucky 1-4 High PTP Double

In this play from Kentucky, 1 initiates with a dribble entry to the right wing. 2 moves into the lane to set a cross-screen for 3. The first option to score is to pass to 3 posting up. This play works well if you have a long wing with the ability to post up. If the post up is not open, 5 and 4 set a double-screen for 2. 2 cuts to the top of the key for a shot. See More

Kentucky 1-4 High Point Through

In this 1-4 high option, the Kentucky Wildcats enter the play with a pass to 4 at the high post. Once 4 has the ball, the point guard cuts through the lane to the opposite block. 5 rubs off of 1's cut looking to get a hi/lo pass from 4. If that option isn't open, the ball is reversed to 1 on the left wing. With the lane open, 5 sets a back-screen for 4 who cuts to the basket. If that's not open, 3 screen for 5 who looks to get a shot at the elbow. If Kentucky still doesn't have a shot, 5 will dribbles towards the right wing looking to pass to 3 flaring to the right wing. Duke BLOB PTP Triangle

This play was used by Duke with 15:31 left in the 2nd half against Gonzaga when Duke was down by 2 points. The play uses a pick-the-picker action to get Winslow the ball on the wing for an open shot. In the game, Winslow made a good shot fake and drove to the basket for a lay-up. The most important part of this play was a good screen set by Winslow forcing his man to help on the initial cut. Once he pops to the wing, Winslow's defender is stuck on the other side of Plumlee. See More

Spartan Zone Options

Here are two zone options against a 2-3 zone from Tom Izzo and his Michigan State Spartans. The play starts with a dribble entry to the right wing pushing 2 into the lane. 2 stops at the rim as 5 screens the middle defender in the zone. 2 then curls around the screen looking to get the ball in the middle of the zone. On the weak side, 4 screens for the low defender on the left side to free up 3 cutting up to the wing. Once 2 gets the ball, the bottom left zone defender has to make a decision on who to guard. If he guards 3 on the wing, 2 passes to 4 for lay-up (Option 1). If the defender takes 4 in the post, 2 passes to 3 for a shot (Option 2). See More
