Favorite Send to FastDrawToday's FastDraw Play of the Day takes you to Eurobasket 2011 in Lithuania, for a look at the defensive side of the ball. In Second Round action today, France needed a defensive stop against Turkey to seal the victory. Turkey had the ball out of bounds, down 3 points, with 5 seconds to play in the game, but failed to inbound the ball within the 5-second time limit to do so, and France hung on to win the game. Every coach at one time or another is in a position where their team needs to force a 5-second call to have a chance to win the game. Usually, it occurs when trailing, and rarely does the team pull it off under pressure. In this case France used it to clinch victory in a game they were leading. The video below show you exactly how this play described above unfolded and allowed France to walk away with a Eurobasket victory: See More

Favorite Send to FastDrawA nice drill that coach Georgios Bartzokas of Olympiacos showed in a clinic. It is 4 on 3 +1 who rotates. In this drill the team works both offense and defense with 1 close out and rotation. After that you can include 2 transitions (3 courts total). The players switch roles and then you can make the substitutions. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawDrill 01 Execution: The team is in two line on the half court (diagram 01). They execute close out to the middle cone – Jump to the ball – close out again to the middle cone – Jump to the ball to the free throw line cone and then they sprint to the middle line. Point of emphasis: Details on the Close out (chopping feet, two hands up, proper hand on ball, run to jump to the ball), Proper technic of execution etc. Drill 02 Execution: The team is in one line on the half court, everybody under the basket and they have one ball. Two Coaches are on the elbow extensions. The drill starts with 1 make a pass to Coach A, close out to the ball, Coach A pass to other Coach B and 1 jump to the ball, at the same time next player 2 close out to the ball (diagram 02). Then Coach B pass to Coach A and 1 close out to the ball and directly after this makes defensive slides to the corner, at the same time 2 jump to the ball and player 3 close out to the ball at maximum speed (diagram 3). The drill continuous with the same way till all the players to execute 2 times each. Point of emphasis: Details on the Close out (chopping feet, two hands up, proper hand on ball, run to jump to the ball), Proper technic of execution etc. Drill 03 Execution: The team is in two line on the half court (diagram 04). They execute pass to Coach and close out to the ball (diagram 04). Then Coach tries to attack the middle and the players contest the drive, after this coach stops the dribble and players press with two hands the “Dead ball” (diagram 05). Point of emphasis: Details on the Close out (chopping feet, two hands up, proper hand on ball, run to jump to the ball), Deny the 1st dribble penetration, Proper technic of execution etc. Drill 04 Execution: The players in pairs (defense / offense) the defender on the baseline with a ball. The X1 pass to 1 and close out, the 1 pass to C and X1 jump to the ball (diagram 06). Then Coach pass again to 1 and they play live 1on1 with offense has to make one dribble before attacking the basket (diagram 06). Point of emphasis: Details on the Close out (chopping feet, two hands up, proper hand on ball, run to jump to the ball), Deny the 1st dribble penetration, Proper technic of execution etc. Drill 05 Execution: Same drill as Drill No 04 (diagram 06). Favorite Send to FastDraw4v3/3v2 Shooting is a great drill to teach your players to move the ball, find an advantage, use ball fakes, and get an open shot. It's also a good drill to teach defensive skills such as anticipation, stunting, and communication. See More
Favorite Send to FastDrawIn this diagram and embedded video we look at a one-on-one drill to teach reading the defense on the catch. I love using different one-on-one games to teach different aspects of play. Being able to modify the defense's starting locations changes the reads for the offensive players. Favorite Send to FastDrawIn this diagram and embedded video we look at a breakdown drill for post players. This drill lets players develop chemistry with one another in the middle third of the court. "2v2 High/Low" can be approached from the offensive side of the ball as well as the defensive side. Favorite Send to FastDrawIn this diagram and embedded video we look one of my favorite defensive drills. I don't see this concept being taught much. The drill is to teach defenders to stay between the ball and the rim in high conflict situations, and force the offense take the toughest shot possible without fouling. Your players can get very good at this skill if it is emphasized enough.
