Basketball Play - Princeton Point Series

Princeton Point Series

Matt Hackenberg 12/05/2021

In this diagram + video we look at a few options to use out of the Princeton Point Series. The diagrams show the different entries, and the video shows some different options to use in a series. The options you could use are unlimited, but here is a group of actions to consider out of the series. This series can be hard to guard when executed correctly. Basketball Play - Princeton Chin

Princeton Chin

Matt Hackenberg 12/05/2021

This diagram and film looks at the basic Princeton Chin action. The action is a bit monotonous, but can be very effective. The action is a continuity, so you can just keep running it until you get a scoring opportunity. It's very good against pressure defense. Basketball Play - UCLA Duck Stagger

UCLA Duck Stagger

Matt Hackenberg 12/06/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we have a set play sometimes referred to as “moon” action but with a little twist. The twist is a quick point guard duck in before using the stagger screen. I like this design because it has actions happening on both sides of the court at the same time, which keeps the help side occupied. Basketball Play - Push Zip Iverson Series

Push Zip Iverson Series

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a series of plays that all play off of each other. The series uses the same movement pattern to make it difficult for the defense to understand what is going to happen through scouting. Some of the these actions are pretty clever! Basketball Play - Shallow Brush

Shallow Brush

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video, we have an option for using a brush screen to get a dynamic driver a gap to penetrate. If this play is well timed, it will create an advantage for the offense. I like the simplicity and the spacing. I like that it can create an advantage quickly, and doesn't require a lot of players to handle the ball. Box Set - Screen In Hammer Pair

Matt Hackenberg 12/07/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at two sets that work together to look similar, but produce different scoring opportunities. I will always be a sucker for a well executed hammer set. Basketball Play - 1-4 High: Slip Spread

1-4 High: Slip Spread

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we try to steal some points with a set play designed to slip a ball screener to the rim. As simple as the action is, it works far more often than you think it might. It flows right into a spread ball screen option if the cheap points don't materialize. Basketball Play - DHO Swing Brush Screen

DHO Swing Brush Screen

Matt Hackenberg 12/08/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we have a set play to get a dynamic driver some space to operate. The play uses some false motion to open space up for a brush screen to be used to try to create an advantage to drive to the basket. I love these gap drive actions to take some pressure off the driver, and make the defense execute with the brush screen. Basketball Play - 5 Out Roll & Seal (Secondary)

5 Out Roll & Seal (Secondary)

Matt Hackenberg 12/09/2021

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a secondary action out of a 5 Out fast break where we drag screen with our post player, and then roll them into the lane. While our post player is rolling, we are creating spacing to make a post entry. Against switching ball screen defenses, this creates an easy mismatch to exploit without having to stop and set up a formal offense. Basketball Play - Princeton Offense - Multi-Option Set: "Hawk"

Princeton Offense - Multi-Option Set: "Hawk"

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

This is a long form play with multiple options from a Princeton alignment and a floppy action to feature a dynamic player. If the player can drive, shoot, post up, finish off the cuts or use a ball screen there are options to do so. We used the play to feature a shooter, but a post up player or a driver could also be used, just different options would need to be emphasized. Basketball Play - Box "Slice" Series: 5 Options

Box "Slice" Series: 5 Options

Matt Hackenberg 12/12/2021

We used a box set with the same initial action to start each play, and then used a numbering system to decide which option we would use. The series sets up multiple back doors, a rejected ball screen to an empty baseline and a stagger screen. I've had this installed every year I've been a head coach, and it works like a charm. Using the same movement pattern for each play allows you to install one play with five different options. Video clip below. Basketball Play - 21 Series Transition Offense

21 Series Transition Offense

Matt Hackenberg 12/15/2021

The 21 series is usually a 3-player action that happens right out of transition. The bunch action makes the options easy to disguise, almost like play action fakes in football. There are a variety of actions that can come from this series, and they all develop quickly, making them ideal for teams that want to play with a fast tempo. Not all the diagrams are represented with clips in the video below, but this was all I could dig up on film. Basketball Play - Zip HO Step Up Hammer SLOB

Zip HO Step Up Hammer SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/16/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a longer form SLOB to create a three-pointer off of hammer action. Sometimes I love this set, and other times, I wish it would just get to the point. I really do like flowing pattern of the set, and hammer action is one of my favorites. All of the action is set up up well using screens to make sure players are open when they need to be. Basketball Play - Zip Slot Double Flare SLOB

Zip Slot Double Flare SLOB

Matt Hackenberg 12/16/2021

In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB that ends in a double flare screen. I think it's an interesting action, but maybe a set to save for use at the right time instead of using it often. I think the movement pattern has great felxibility to be paired with other options that look similar in flow, but don't use the double flare. Video below.
