Transition Track Down:
04/15/2015Place a cone at the feet throw line extended at the opposite end of the court. The offense can’t cut in towards the basket until after they reach that cone, which allows the defense a bit more time to catch up and avoids collisions at mid court. The defensive player works to track down the offensive player and make a play on the ball. It is important that players do not get out of control during this drill, and that they never hit one of their teammates while in the air...we don’t want anyone getting injured. Instead, the defender needs to work on doing one of the following: sprinting in front of the offensive player; knocking the ball out from behind; blocking the shot from behind; or catching up completely and working to stop further penetration. (Note: while this is primarily a defensive drill, it is also a great way for your players to learn to finish with pressure and/or small contact on the offensive side of the ball.) See More

Bermuda Triangle Close Out
04/14/2015Start with 4 players and a coach at each basket. Three of the players start around the three point line as the offensive team…one player on each wing and one at the top of the key. The fourth player starts on defense and is under the basket with a ball. The defensive player rolls the ball out to one of the offensive players on the wing, then they close out and defend that offensive player. The defensive player is working 1-on-1 to force a bad shot and get the defensive rebound. Once the defender secures the rebound, they move on to the next offensive player by rolling them the ball and closing out on them. The defensive player must get 3 stops in a row, one from each player on offense. This is where the defense can get “caught in the Bermuda Triangle”…if you don’t get stops you will get stuck in there! Once the defender gets all 3 stops, everyone rotates one position. The drill ends when all 4 players have made their stops as the defensive player. The coach is at the basket to call fouls, which count as a score and the defender must move on to the next offensive player. See More

Box Gate Clear Out SLOB
04/11/2022In this diagram and embedded video we look at a SLOB for an empty side clear out for the point guard. This is so simple. There is not really any advantage through the action other than space, so you need a playmaker that can create 1 on 1. 5 Out "Backdoor" Dribble Drive
12/10/2021We modify our dribble drive attack from 4 Out to 5 Out and use passing and cutting to create double gaps to drive. This action works best against pressure man defense and allows for tempo control by the offense. I love the offense from a developmental standpoint, teaching cutting, catching, passing and pivoting. Quick Hitter: Box Overload Duck
11/23/2021Any time we had a functional big man, we always have this in the playbook. The play is simple, and provides a great opportunity to isolate your big. The movement puts the defense in a tough spot because the back side help is removed, so if they front, we can throw over the top for a layup. If they play behind, we have a 1 on 1 opportunity on the block. The play gets right to the point of the set, which I like because it limits the number of ball handlers and decisions that need to be made. You can easilty hide weaker players in the 4 or the 2 spot in this play. Team USA - Swing DHO Floppy vs Zone
09/09/2019Team USA basketball faced a zone defense for much of their game against Turkey in the FIBA World Cup. They were down 1 late in overtime and ran this play to get a shot for Joe Harris (3) off of some movement. This is a common play that Gregg Popovich uses with the Spurs against man defense. They made some adjustments to run this as an effective play against Turkey's 2-3 zone defense. 1 reversed the ball to 5. Then 5 went into a dribble handoff with 2. but didn't need to set a good screen on x2. This allowed x2 to get through the screen and shift out of the wing area to matchup with 2 up top. 5 then screened x4 on the outside of the zone to get 3 open. This essentially forced Turkey to matchup man to man with x4 having to guard 3. x4 trailed on the screen and 3 was able to turn the corner on the catch and drive to the basket. See More

04/17/2019The pinch post actions the Aces use are designed specifically to maximize the number of touches Wilson receives, many of which result in isolations for her in the elbow and mid-post areas. She is an absolutely lethal jump shooter from those areas, and is quicker than most of her counterparts which allows her to sweep and get to the rim with ease. After setting a downscreen for a slasher, Wilson finds her spot and receives the entry pass. From there, there is a handoff option, usually rejected in favor of a face up 1 on 1 play.
