Elbow Down is a good multi-action, long play that really forces the defense to react, move and cover several threats. I’m a big fan of long plays – if your players are cerebral enough to execute them they can be extremely difficult for the defense to cover and allows for your offense to flow. Too often when I watch games I see a team running a short set with a singular scoring action only to have it snuffed out and see the offense stop and stand. I also like long plays with multiple scoring options because it makes all 5 players feel involved in the action and forces them to be more active participants. In Elbow Down literally all 5 players have a realistic shot of scoring.
As PG initiates the offense 4 sets a wide pindown for 2. 2 can look to curl. If 2 doesn't have curl he pops to wing.
On 2's catch 5 steps out and sets a backscreen for PG to the basket and out. *2 won't hit PG unless wide open.
5 then sets a high ballscreen for 2 at the top of the key. 2 attacks the ballscreen and looks to pitch to a shooter in the corner if the defense collapses.
5 rolls after setting the ballscreen. 4 fills behind looking for a shot.
If 4 doesn't have a shot he looks high low to 5. PG takes his man in.
4 reverses to PG. On PG's catch 5 lifts out of the post and 2 and 3 interchange.
4 follows for a side ballscreen and slips it to the basket looking for a layup.
5 follows behind 4 right into a side ballscreen. PG attacks the ballscreen.
