John Beilein had a masterful game plan against the Syracuse 2-3 Zone and here is another example of moving players and the ball to get the best possible shot
The Orangemen were consistently spread out by the passing of the Wolverines and had their fair share of open looks
There were also many secondary options off the sets which created match-up problems for the vaunted Syracuse Zone Defense of Jim Boeheim
1-3-1 Zone Set Play vs 2-3 Zone
1 (Burke 3) passes to 2 (Stauskas 11) on the wing and quickly receives the pass back
3 (Hardaway Jr. 10) moves to the ball side elbow on the wing pass
5 (McGary 4) cuts under the zone to the ball side block on the wing pass - if x3 does not react after helping on the wing pass, the post entry pass is wide open
1-3-1 Zone Set Play vs 2-3 Zone
1 (Burke 3) passes to 2 (Stauskas 11) on the wing and gets the pass back and quickly passes to 4 (Robinson III 1) on the wing
3 (Hardaway Jr. 10) moves with the pass elbow-to-elbow and receives the pass from 4 (Robinson III 1)
5 (McGary 4) moves with the pass to the strong side block
*Notice the effect of the quick passing by Michigan, spreading the zone out on their coverages
1-3-1 Zone Set Play vs 2-3 Zone
3 (Hardaway Jr. 10) throws a quick pass to 2 (Stauskas 11) spotting up on the weak side wing for a wide open 3 pt shot
*x3 is late with recovering on the pass, x2 is not in position to defend the shot
5 (McGary 4) again does a good job occupying the baseline with his side-to-side cuts reacting on the pass and finding open space behind the zone - in this situation, x4 is forced to go with him leaving x1 to defend any weak side skip pass
