About This Play/Drill

The first set of drills we use to breakdown the defense are our "Anticipation Drills."  These drills reinforce proper slides, coverages and playing with bounce and energy.  Early in the season, we like to make every player go through each of these anticipation drills.

  • Keeper Anticipation Drill: This drill is designed for our keeper to work on slides when the ball goes to the corner in our 1-3-1. She is responsible for keeping ball off the high post and reading the shoulders of the ball handler in the corner.

  • Pusher Anticipation Drill: Same concepts as the pusher will read the shoulders of the coach and try to get deflections. Drill can be done on both sides of the floor.

  • Clogger Anticipation Drill Part 1: Offense aligns in a box formation and coaches should placed at the top and in corner with two other players opposite as passers. Clogger tries to deflect as many passes in a 20-30 second interval. Coaches should have managers or players not in the drill continuously feeding coach ball if its knocked out of play.

  • Clogger Anticipation Drill Part 2: If the ball gets passed to the corner the clogger reads should of corner player and tries to deflect block and elbow pass. X5 will continue to work around the triangle as coaches and players continue to pass balls into the block and elbow areas.

  • The last anticipation drill we use is for our corner coverage. The pusher must read the shoulders of the coach and anticipate passes to the elbow, low block and weak side slot.
