Within the system that I have been evolving over time, I realized the importance to have strong post action but also to have variation in what occurs off the post catch.
We teach this action in various levels from U12s in Country Victoria through to our Junior National teams.
With this idea, we now teach two actions relative to where the ball is caught, which i term "post zone". the catch being In the post zone or out of the post zone.
In all of our teaching we have a strong emphasis of if it is 1 v 1 its on you to score, if you see 2 you must pass the ball, this is the same for our post players and a reason for having multiple cutters off the weakside.
Australian basketball has followed the late clock philosophy of Europe with late penetration, out of post play we like to finish with either on balls on the seem or middle on ball, depending what post zone the ball was caught in.
Post read breakdowns
Read one is when the post up occurs in the "post zone" (shadded area) from edge of block/charge to the block
O1 passes to O2 and space cuts, dragging their defender away from the post
If post up occurs here the rule is on entry that the O2 would lift to lane line outside the three to make there defender either stay with them, allowing 1 v 1 in the post or force them to double down where O2 is ready for catch and shoot 3
On the post catch and once O5 has lifted, O3 would dive cut off the diagonal looking to score
O1 replaces the diagonal for a receiving pass
If pass isnt on O3 replaces in the weak side corner and if a 1 v 1 opportunity by the O5 isnt on, they can kick out to O2 and play 2 man game on the empty side of the floor
Read 2 is when the post catches off the block
If the post catches off the block in the shadded area the rule is that O2 would cut to the rim on a scoring cut through the elbow and exit to the furthest point weak side
through the elbow is important to ensure X2 has to make a defensive decision and not be able to defend two
If O2 does not receive the pass, they exit to the weak side corner, O3 makes a scoring cut off the diagonal and O1 replaces O3
O4 has dragged around to be a bail out pass if needed
If O3 doesn't receive the ball on their cut, they get out to weak side corner and O1 replaces at the top of the key to set up middle on ball play
O2 replaces O1
If O5 does not have the 1 v 1 opportunity, they then kick out to O1
O4 spaces to strong side corner
O5 screens for middle on ball with O1 to complete the play
