Hit 4 over the top. 4- Make sure you step across your man and then up. Dont allow him to get between you and the ball. 1- Look to hit 3 in the middle of the lane 2- Cut up one step and then screen 3's man. Be on the move when the ball is in the air to 4. 3- Cut under the rim into the middle of the lane 5- Cut your man up toward the wing 5- When 3 catches it and you have jogged your man up, backdoor cut hard for the pass from 3 See More

Basketball Play - Pistol - 21 Offense Breakdown

Pistol - 21 Offense Breakdown

Dave Nedbalek 07/05/2017

The Pistol offense is one of my favorite offenses right now. With the different reads and options you can make out of the initial pass it is really hard to comfortable defending. Point of emphasis would be to really make sure your wings and point guard give themselves enough room to operate sideline side to not warrant and immediate trap (although I have found that is one of the better ways to defend the initial action, so plan accordingly, tweet me @DaveNedbalekUTT and we can discuss) Please share any wrinkles counters you see, or have run. I will include some decoy entries in a later post, as well as a video breakdown. Teams running this right now: -LA Clippers -Golden State Warriors -Houston Rockets See More

Basketball Play - 21/Pistol 1-4 High Entry

21/Pistol 1-4 High Entry

Dave Nedbalek 07/05/2017

This is a disguised entry into 21. Defense is about positioning so getting any defense out of the position they are familar guarding an action out of automatically begins putting them to the test. This is only the entry into the 21 offense. If you have not seen that yet I recommend checking out my diagram of it here See More

This is only the entry into the 21 offense. If you have not seen that yet I recommend checking out my diagram of it here I will be uploading a couple wrinkles from this because I think the misdirection to isolatin for the 5 man is reallly stinking good here with everyone perimeter weakside it really gives you some freedowm to exploit here. I will upload a version of how to get any position on your floor seamlessly into the post position for this action as a set but this itself is simply the Flex entry into 21. See More

Basketball Play - Milwaukee Bucks - 21 Mix Fan

Milwaukee Bucks - 21 Mix Fan

Dave Nedbalek 03/26/2018

Although this set is not enthusiastically run, or defended, it is nontheless a good action. The intitial set up looks like it is going to be your basic dribble handoff into a ball screen action, but instead it is a quick pitch to a flare for a 3pt look, or a slip to the rim. Ran with some pace, this could be a really good quick transition action. See More

Basketball Play - Michigan Wolverines - Dive Wing Clear

Michigan Wolverines - Dive Wing Clear

Dave Nedbalek 03/26/2018

John Beilein's Two Guard offense is full of beautiful action and full of endless possibilities. You really need a dynamic 5 man who can shoot and force the defense to spread. This is a simple misdirection action to create a double driving gap. We are using this more and more since the way the game is officiated, and the rules are designed guarding the ball one on one with space for them to create is one of the hardest things to do defensively. If you are interested in learning more of the Two Guard offense, and getting a TON of quick hitters out of it I recommend Tom Jicha's dvd from Championship Productions. Ironically, I have never watched Beilein himself teach this, but we play several teams that run this offense and when run correctly with a big that can stretch the floor you are in for a long night defensively. Basketball Play - Houston Cougars - Horns Elbow Brush ISO

Houston Cougars - Horns Elbow Brush ISO

Dave Nedbalek 03/21/2018

The University of Houston runs an incredibly effective offense. This set is designed to get a mismatch and the ball in space with shooters surrounding him. Michigan switched this defensively, which for most teams in the country a 1 to 5 or 1 to 4 ball screen would present serious mismatch problems. If defense does not switch, there is either a layup, three, or long closeout to be had. See More

Basketball Play - Houston Cougars - Box Philly Gate from BLOB

Houston Cougars - Box Philly Gate from BLOB

Dave Nedbalek 04/05/2018

This is a great BLOB set used by Houston against Michigan in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Although Houston doesn't score here, the misidirection from the elevator screen really provides an effective setup. Included in the last frame is a counter hitting 1 on a backdoor cut on an open side. Not shown in the diagram, but may I also suggest a DHO from 3 to 1 after 1's action in Frame 2. This prevents the action from being stagnant with 3 dribbling the entire time. See More

Michigan Wolverines - Pop Slice Rip

Dave Nedbalek 03/27/2018

Don't be fooled but the lack of "success" of these set plays in the video clip below. The coaching staffs in post-season play are so well scouted and the teams are elite in preperation that oftentimes the desired shot is not available. Nonetheles, the analytics surrounding side changes and paint touches remains true, as they break the defense down with each action. This set presents several shot opportunities, and the spacing is so phenoenal that however the defense plays it, there will be scoring options with the advantage created. See More

Basketball Play - Toledo Rockets - Horns Floppy

Toledo Rockets - Horns Floppy

Dave Nedbalek 08/26/2018

The University of Toledo men's team runs some phenomenal action under Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk. They are one of the most "set-driven" teams in the country. Out of 1,640 FGA in the 2017-2018 season, only 196 were in transition. This diagram isn't 100% accurate to the formation/timing of the video clip below, but you can easlily see where my adaptations come from. I generally like to allow clips or actions to get my creativity flowing. When I see initial action that I really like, I will often build a 'series' of sets around that particular action. Check out my counters of this action: Horns Floppy: Spain PNR Counter Horns Floppy: Double Stagger Counter This is a great set with some very quick decisions to be made by the defense. As you can see the end of result of this set is not a basket, and to be honest it isn't particulary great execution or spacing, but you can most certainly see the potential of this set. I am a huge fan of the floppy action, not so much for the guard coming off, but for the great sealing position the screener should be in. These are great opportunities to screen with bigger guards that can exploit mismatches as well. Click here for more plays by Dave Nedbalek! See More

Basketball Play - Toledo Rockets - Horns Floppy: Spain SPNR Counter

Toledo Rockets - Horns Floppy: Spain SPNR Counter

Dave Nedbalek 08/26/2018

This is a counter from the base action I diagramed entitled, "Toledo Horns Floppy." This is a very simple yet effective counter you can run with this set. The vide below is not of this set itselft, but the base Horns Floppy action. As 2 comes off of 5's floppy screen, 4 will hit 2 and sprint straight into a side pick and roll. 2 will hunt the nail pulling the ball two bounces away from the screen looking to get in the paint with a scoring mindset first. As 4 rolls to the rim 5 will set a back screen on the defender in ball screen coverage. I worded that carefully to account for the likelihood of a switch. Screen the defender that is in ball screen coverage. After setting the back screen, 5 will pop to recover spacing/get outside of the 3pt line. This is a deadly action if you have a 5 who can step out and shoot it. 2's reads: 1) score 2) Lob/pass to 4 rolling 3) 5 popping It goes without saying that if the weak side defense hugs in, then 2 would kickout to 1, or 3 holding the side ready to shoot.
