The Wisconsin Badgers ran this BLOB play in their match-up against the Florida Gators on Tuesday night. It comes out of a 1-4 low set-up The guards begin by crossing trying to catch the defense in a "switch" situation which would possibly open up a quick hit inbounds pass on the weak side. If this doesn't happen, the 5 man sets a screen on the 2 who pops looking to catch & shoot if open. When the catch & shoot pass is not free, the Badgers utilize the SPNP as 5 pops to the corner off the ball screen looking to catch & shoot the 3 pt shot in the corner. The Florida Gators do a very good job running their half court Ball Screen Motion offense. With good screening angles, strong basket cuts, and good spacing for kick-out passes, the Gators are able too breakdown defenses with their quickness on the perimeter and the strength of their inside game. Coach Donovan does a good job adjusting his sets during the course of the game giving his team the best chance to get high percentage shots from their half court offenses. See More

Head Coach Billy Donovan has a wealth of experience and the way he runs his half court sets demonstrates this. Here is "America's play", a simple Horns action with a STS action at the end setting up either post entry or a possible jump shot. The University of Virginia ran this 1-4 BLOB action against VCU. With the flex screen, the play has a quick hitting action to it off the inbounds pass and the pin down screen-the-screener action gives the shooter a chance to get off an open shot if the defense miscommunicates on the flex cut Here, the PG does a good job reading the defender and gets into the lane off the dribble. The variety of sets VCU runs in a single game gives their offense a chance to score on every possession. What makes the VCU Rams such a tough team is their execution in the half court and the ability for their guards to handle the ball. In this set, you have the Over / Under cut whch can be used to set-up your shooter or get post entry off the diagonal backscreen for the 4 man. VCU also does a good job reading the defense with quick ball reversal, they are able to finish the set with a middle ball screen setting up penetration in the lane causing the defense to rotate. VCU Head Coach Shaka Smart was one of the hottest coaching names in the off-season, but showed his true loyalty to the program that he has built into a yearly power. This year Smart returns a line-up with experience and their offense is enjoyable and entertaining to watch. This Weave action really does a good job using the flare screen, good cutting actions, and a ball screen at the end to set-up a wide open 3 pt shot in the corner. VCU's quickness at the guard positions gives defenses nightmares with their ability to breakdown 1 v 1 off the dribble. See More

This BLOB was run by MSU to get their PG Trice a shot off the inbounds action. What made this possible was the miscommunication between the two defenders guarding Harris & Trice. They got caught in a switch and Trice's defender got pinned behind the screen giving the inbounder a clear pass off the double screen to the shooter. See More

Marquette Head Coach Buzz Williams ran the 4 High Series and this is an easy to use set for all levels. There is a good over the top action to being freeing up the 2 man on the wing who can look to drive if the defense gets hung up in the screen. Second, they run a good UCLA action for the PG who cuts to the basket looking for a possible pass. You get a ball reversal and baseline screen for 1 who comes out looking for his shot or post entry to 5 sealing in. There is a Zipper action for the 3 man who cuts off 5 to the basket looking for a quick hit lob pass or direct lay-up. The play ends with a SPNR between 5 & 1 and the spacing is excellent coming off the screen as the shooters spot up on the wing and corner, 4 dives to the weak side block. A great all around set with multiple options! See More

Last night I tweeted that Doc Rivers is one of the greatest ATO coaches of all time; this play is a big reason why. He drew up this play during a timeout late in the 4th quarter versus the Miami Heat. This play is so effective, yet very simple to run and provides multiple scoring opportunities. As 1 (CP3) received the dribble hand-off from 4 (Griffin), he has 3 main options: 1. Pull-up jumper or attack the rim 2. Drive and force X3 to help and kick out to 3 for a catch & shoot 3. Drive and look to kick out to 2 in the corner if X2 rotates to the lane. See More

Last night in their buzzer beating loss to the UCONN Huskies, the Florida Gators ran this elevator play to revive their offense in the 2nd half. This is a play that ESPN Analyst Seth Greenberg talked about during the broadcast, breaking down the elevator screen. I drew the 5-1 pick in grey because it does not have to be added but is a nice tweak. In the event you need a 2 in this situation, a quick slip from 5 is also a nice option after setting the screen.
