"Corners" is our base zone offense against 1-3-1 zone, 3-2 zone, and any type of extended half court or 3/4 court. It provides great spacing to play against any form of trapping defense with the 2-1-2 alignment. Fake passes are critical, as well as not throwing passes with a lot of loft on them. Once in the scoring area, we look to dive our high post and flash to the middle when the ball gets to the corner. We used this set to overload the baseline against a 3-2 or 2-3 zones. Our objective is to get the ball to the middle, but sometimes the corner three is there if the defense doesn't shift correctly. The timing of 5's seal is key to getting the curl into the middle. Once the ball goes to the middle, there are great opportunities to score or skip the ball. See video clip below. Out of our 5 Out alignment we used a set to to bring our 1 off of a double stagger screen. We reverse the ball to our 4, dribble hand off to the 2, and stagger screen on the back side. Developing slipping options out of the stagger would make this set even tougher to guard. In this diagram and embedded video we look closely at a variation of the 5 Out Circle Motion. This variation has a 4 Out, 1 In alignment. I've never actually used the 4 Out version, but I thought it was interesting seeing it on film. We used a 5 Out pass and cut offense which set up this play perfectly. When the designated shooter got to the top of the key we double-flared the back side and dribbled at the flare screens. We used a numbering system for our personnel - the point guard was the 1, shooting guard was the 2, etc. So I would call "Special 2" to indicate we were running the flare screens for the shooting guard in our system. In this diagram and embedded video we look at a simple ball screen concept. We used this when we had two attacking guards we wanted to keep out front, allowing them to create by using a ball screen or rejecting into the gap. We wanted to keep shooters in the corners as much as possible. For as simple as the cocnept was, it was fairly effective against good competition. The 21 series is usually a 3-player action that happens right out of transition. The bunch action makes the options easy to disguise, almost like play action fakes in football. This diagram and embedded video is a simple set play to screen the back side forward and distract the middle defender in order to lob behind a 2-3 or 3-2 zone. We usually try this once or twice any time we play against zone teams. It works fairly well to steal an easy bucket. The toughest part of executing the action is the timing and accuracy of the pass. In this diagram and video clip we see a SLOB set to try to steak a quick bucket. With a solid screen by 1 against a defense that gets through screens, this can work. I like that 1 is the player setting the back screen, loosening up the defense so that they can go catch the ball if the lob isn't there. The lob pass is critical, so you want a trusted passer to making the decision to throw the lob or not. Video clip below. In this diagram and video clip we see a back cut on the gate screen action. I think this action is best paired in series with using the gate screen, using the gate screen and then slipping a screener, and some option after entering to the corner. So if I didn't have a gate screen series installed, I would think about this as a play to draw up in a timeout, or a rare special sitatution SLOB you don't use very often at all. Video clip below.
