Basketball Play - Indiana Hoosiers - Zone Attack (2 plays)

Indiana Hoosiers - Zone Attack (2 plays)

Dustin Cooper 11/11/2018

Overloading against a zone can be overwhelming for the defense. Indiana coach Archie Miller uses these two overload actions to create a 1 on 1 matchup with his bigs vs the middle of the zone. 1: In the first video clip, the wing defender is confused on who to cover and leaves the corner wide open. 2: In the last clip, the wing tries to split the wing and corner offensive player, leaving a 1 on 1 in the post, which is exactly what the Hoosiers are looking for. Gonzaga Bulldogs - Mix Pitch Dive Keep

This is a great set from Gonzaga Coach Mark Few. It appears that 5 is sprinting into a ball screen, but actualy will recieve the pass and look to hit the guard cutting backdoor. If 5 is overplayed, this is a great backdoor opportunity for him as well. If the backdoor cut is not there, then everyone holds and 5 has a double gap to drive his man from the top of the key. Basketball Play - Kansas Jayhawks - Horns 54

Kansas Jayhawks - Horns 54

This is a great set that we have seen many NBA teams run, namely the Cleveland Cavaliers utilizing LeBron James as the screner. T he proximity to the rim and the pace with which Kansas runs it makes it even tougher for the defenders to talk their way through defending this action. I love that the Jayhawk bigs casually jog down before popping back up the lane lines quickly to start the defense out of step. On the FMS Blog: NCAA Preseason Top 25 XsOs - Teams 1-5 See More

Basketball Play - Duke Blue Devils - Flash Hold

Duke Blue Devils - Flash Hold

Dave Nedbalek 11/09/2018

This may not be the most innovative set, but it is the essence of good offense: get your best player the ball in spots where he/she can be effective. Duke will flash Reddish or Williamson to the elbow extended area and space off of him. They are trusting in their decision making, but also trusting that regardless of the defense knowing exactly what is coming they will find a way. The worst thing you can do to elite players is neutralize their skill by running them through aimless sets. As quickly as possible, get your best player the ball in their spot. For those of us that don't have 5 lottery picks on our roster, I added a wrinkle to the last frame that might serve you well with some split action around the catch. Kansas Jayhawks - Horns Zipper Weave Duck

This is great action to get a spread ball screen with lots of midline movement, and then also a chance for a deep post up. Kansas opened up its Champions Classic game vs Duke with this set, and runs this with great pace and execution, however it is well defended by the Blue Devils. A key point is the skip pass before the post entry. If the help side defender is tagging on the post, then skip and immediately enter the ball like Kansas does. Basketball Play - Virginia Cavaliers - EOG Philly Pin

Virginia Cavaliers - EOG Philly Pin

Dave Nedbalek 11/09/2018

This is a great set with many scoring options off of it. The flat ball screen isolates your best player driving to score. You also get the Philly cut where you can get the ball to another driver on the move, then you have the pin screen for the shooter cutting baseline, and lastly you have the initial screener popping to shoot. Simple concept but great addition to your end of game playbook. On the FMS Blog: NCAA Preseason Top 25 XsOs - Teams 1-5 See More

Basketball Play - Virginia Cavaliers - Euro Shake + Empty Counter

Virginia Cavaliers - Euro Shake + Empty Counter

Dave Nedbalek 11/09/2018

I love this action that Virginia ran some in their first exhbition. Obviously they are traditionaly a blocker mover team (BEAUTIFUL to watch them by the way), but this is a twist on the classic European ball screen continuity offense. In the normal ball screen continuity, the loaded wing would backdoor cut through and the ball screen would be executed with the guard lifting out of the corner. In this wrinkle, the Cavaliers set the side ball screen on the top player and let the corner shake action play out. This is one of my favorite actions, and one of the hardest to guard. Another benefit is as the ball is reversed, the opposite guard now has an empty side of the floor to reject his ball screen - as you in the clip below.
