A look at the Lakers' pick-and-roll sans Nash (Pt. 1)
12/03/2012The Los Angeles Lakers have had their ups-and-downs since Mike D'Antoni was named their new head coach, which was expected with Steve Nash being out, but the one consistent theme with the offense so far has been how well Kobe Bryant is working out of the pick-and-roll. Forget scoring, which Bryant is doing at an elite level even in his 17th season, Kobe, whose reputation as a gunner has sullied his beautiful passing ability, is facilitating the offense extremely well in the abscene of Nash. On this play we can see how Kobe makes a great read to find a wide open shooters as well as how much attention Dwight Howard draws onn the pick-and-roll. This is the kind of play that D'Antoni is thinking about when he considers starting Antawn Jamison over Pau Gasol for spacing purposes. See More

Utilizing the Lakers' talent
11/22/2012Mike D'Antoni said something very interesting about his up-tempo offensive philosophies. He said that if you have the best team, why not try to give your players the most possessions possible. The theory being that the more times that Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash have to execute their offensive brilliance, the better it will be for his team since the opposition's talent won't be able to match them. If the game slows down, all of the sudden your margin for error shrinks and a handful of mistakes can cost you a game. D'Antoni also said that he expects the Lakers to average around 110-115 points per game, which are numbers that haven't been reached since the Nash/Amare combo in Phoenix was broken up. Those two things tell us that the Lakers will be playing at a very fast pace from now on, and despite the popular belief that their roster is too old to run, a free flowing offense is exactly what a veteran team wants in favor of a methodical offense like Boston runs which requires a lot of physical screening and post-up attempts. And having playmakers like Nash and Kobe together only makes this team more dangerous offensively because of his versatile they are coming off of pick-and-rolls. Nash is perhaps the greatest to ever operate a screen-and-roll and Bryant, because of his propensity to shoot, is a very underrated passer. Throw-in the most skilled big man in the league at power forward in Pau Gasol and the best finisher the league has seen since Shawn Kemp in Dwight Howard and we could have the makings of Showtime 2.0. This play that I have designed would make good use of the cavalcade of skill players that the Lakers have. Because of the up-tempo offense the Lakers will be running, the play starts in semi-transition with Kobe handling the ball at the start. I have inserted Jodie Meeks into the line-up for Metta World Peace to add a true floor spacer. The shots that this set produces are all optimal ones based on these players career hotspots and you can run it several different ways with different players on the floor. It is best with this set up, though, with Kobe initiating the action, Nash bringing a ton of secondary concerns and Howard acting as the league's best roll man and lob catcher. See More

Hand Off with Ball Screen
10/12/2012A handoff followed by a ball screen is basically a double ball screen but it helps to get the player the ball even if they are being denied. Come off the ball screen and look to make a play for your yourself or a teammate. On the handoff dribble right at the wings defender and try to screen him as you hand the ball off. Wing needs to take a good angle to come off the handoff and ball screen, look to turn the corner on the ball screen if you can. This play is from the 2005-2006 Duke season. See More

Transition Stagger Handoff

Wide PNR w/ pindown
10/01/2012A good wrinkle with a lot of action. The corner downscreen stretches the defense, and the downscreen for a shooter will occupy backside help. One of the best with this action (ballscreen & downscreen) is Williams College. They really drill this concept and then have certain reads to make out of the next pass. One of their favorite actions is to then have the person who set the ballscreen turn and flare in for the 1. See More

Transition Offense with Hand Off & Ball Screen
09/21/2012Transition plays can be a great chance for your team to get easy buckets. If you can get your whole team down and into your offense before the defense gets set this provides a great chance to score. Make sure that if there isn’t a good look off of the transition play pull it out and run offense, don’t need to force up a bad shot. Transition Offense with Pin Down
09/20/2012This is a transition man to man set. Look to get into it as quickly as possible before the defense can get set. It is a pretty simple action but it is a good quick hitter before the defense can get matched up. The screener needs to set a good screen and the cutter needs to come off looking to score. Players must sprint up the floor and get set, make sure that the screener doesn’t set a moving screen. This play is from the 2007-2008 Chicago Bulls season. See More

Transition Dribble Down/Double Screen
09/20/2012This play is for a quick hitter in transition. For this play to work the offense needs to get down and get into the play before the defense can get back and get completely set. Screeners need to set good legal screens, cutter needs to come off the down screens looking to score, and the play needs to happen as quickly as possible. Single/Double
09/16/2012The single/double screen play is a good set because it doesn’t allow the defense to cheat. There are multiple reads that you can make out of it and this keeps the defense honest. If your shooter is open off of the screens hit him, if the defensive bigs have to help out on the screen look in the post, or let the cutter just catch the ball on the wing and play out of it. Tell your big men to set good screens and then duck in hard. Cutter needs to set his man up and not be predictable on his cut. This play is from the 2007-2008 Chicago Bulls season. See More
