Basketball Play - Heat Zipper Iverson Ball Screen

Heat Zipper Iverson Ball Screen

Kevin Bruinsma 06/27/2013

The Miami Heat run a lot of stuff to get Lebron James a catch in the middle of the floor. Here they use a zipper action to clear out Chalmers or Cole and to get the ball to James. The PG runs off an Iverson cut after giving the ball up to James to clear the side. The 2 man in this case Wade would come ball screen after setting the Iverson and then spread to the opposite side of the floor. If James still hasn't created anything the 4 man, Chris Bosh after setting his Iverson screen would come over and set a ball screen with the entire left side of the floor cleared for a 2 man game. Basketball Play - Spurs Screen The Screener

Spurs Screen The Screener

Kevin Bruinsma 07/05/2013

A very simple and common set that the San Antonio Spurs ran and scored effectively in the NBA Finals was their screen the screener action out of Early Offense. Miami began defending it by having their weakside corner defender moving up to the top of the key to be there on the catch, and allowing their defender to chuck the post player coming across the lane longer. The Spurs caught on and skipped it to the weakside corner once for a 3. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs SLOB Bearcat

Spurs SLOB Bearcat

Kevin Bruinsma 07/05/2013

A common San Antonio Spurs SLOB which didn't translate into many points against the Miami Heat. But the amount they ran it made me think they must have had good success with this action during the season. They utilized these back screens to get #21 Tim Duncan a post iso. The only hoop they got on this action against Miami was a #2 Kawhi Leonard 3 from the top of the key. See More

This set led to a wide open #21 Tim Duncan 15 foot jump shot in the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat. In a horns set they utilized a flex screen to get into the action. This forced Duncan's man to defend something else before he popped up to the FT line. See More

Basketball Play - Miami Ball Screen Under

Miami Ball Screen Under

Kevin Bruinsma 07/11/2013

A very simple set that the Miami Heat ran to get two baskets against the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. By putting the 4 man in the corner they brought both defending bigs out of the paint. The 5 ball screens for the 1 who attacks to the 4's side. Kicking the ball to the 4 the 5 rolls hard to the rim. Most teams defend the rim with the low man away. Here that is the 3 man's defender. The 3 man goes to the baseline and slides to the ball side part of the floor and gets a short jumper outside the paint. The Heat ran this for #3 Dwayne Wade. See More

Basketball Play - Side Ball Screen Vs. 2-3

Side Ball Screen Vs. 2-3

Kevin Bruinsma 01/22/2015

Tied 63-63 against UMKC we turned to the side ball screen action against their match-up 2-3 zone they played for nearly 40 minutes. The key was a great screen by #4 Amiker, which eliminated the ball defender. The weakside guard of their zone had to stop our ball handler, #11 Cole in a tie game, who then kicked it to our shooter, #10 Keene on the left wing. The bottom man of the zone didn't want to leave another shooter, #1 Plummer in the corner of the floor so the top defender tried to stop ball and then recover to contest the shot. See More

Basketball Play - Depaul Horns Action

Depaul Horns Action

Kevin Bruinsma 01/22/2015

Trailing by 2 with 20 seconds left and facing a UIC 2-3 zone defense Depaul went to a horns action against the zone. They made it difficult for UIC’s zone to determine when to bump and when to stay defending the ball and it ultimately led to an open game winning 3. Keep in mind Depaul didn't hit the shot off the initial action, but the action broke UIC down and led to the wide open 3 pointer. See More

Basketball Play - Pittsburgh Stagger

Pittsburgh Stagger

Kevin Bruinsma 01/24/2015

Tied 72-72 with under 20 seconds left to play Pittsburgh ran a stagger action that free’d up #3 Cameron Wright for a wide open mid-range jumper to win the game. #3 Wright missed the shot, but Pitt went on to defeat Horizon League member Oakland in overtime. A small part to this action that I really liked was when the 1 passed the 4 man as he navigated down to the block the 4 showed his hands to the 5 man at the elbow as if he was expecting a pass for a shot. Even if he wasn’t an option in the play his attention to detail caused his man to at least play him as a threat which created a better angle for his pin down screen for the 1 man. See More
