Basketball Play - Croatia - Horns Double Stagger/DHO Option

Croatia - Horns Double Stagger/DHO Option

Ryan Nguyen 09/15/2018

Croatia ran this Horns (call is "4") set against Lithuania in the first window of the second round of the FIBA European Qualifiers. Set starts off with a little misdirection with 5 screening for 4. Then 4 and 5 then set a stagger for 3. They then set another stagger along the baseline for 2 who comes off the screen looking for a shot. If 2 isn't open, 4 flashes to the elbow for a pass. After the elbow entry, they run a 3 man action looking to create a single tag off the pindown into DHO. See More

Basketball Play - Finland - Diamond 2

Finland - Diamond 2

Ryan Nguyen 09/18/2018

This is one of the many "Diamond" sets from Henrik Dettmann of the Finnish National Team. 2, a shooter, sets the back screen for 4. As x2 helps on the back screen, 5 dribbles out of the post into a handoff for 2. Because x2 bumps 4 on his cut, he is trailing behind 2 out of position to contest. See More

Basketball Play - Memphis Grizzlies - Shuffle Flare Rip DHO

Memphis Grizzlies - Shuffle Flare Rip DHO

Ryan Nguyen 11/13/2018

This is one of the options that the Memphis Grizzlies run out of their "Shuffle" series. The play starts with the PG making the hit-ahead pass then cuts through to the opposite side of the floor. 5 then flashes to the strong side elbow to set a shuffle screen after the pass to the corner. If the initial cut off the shuffle screen isn't available for a score, 4 sets a flare for 2 on the weak side then 3 sets a rip screen for 4 (STS action). Immediately after the rip screen, 3 sprints into a DHO with 5 and stops behind for a shot if defense goes under. On the FMS Blog: Gap Creating Cuts to Enhance Your Offense See More

Basketball Play - USC - "Circle 51 Dive"

USC - "Circle 51 Dive"

Doug Brotherton 03/17/2017

USC ran this half court set in their first round 2017 NCAA Tournament win over SMU. They used this "Circle Action" to get their Point Guard (1) down hill, off of a ball screen. The weak side defender helped on the roll, so USC skipped it to the opposite corner for an open three point shot. See More

Basketball Play - Cleveland Cavs - Zipper Pin DHO

Cleveland Cavs - Zipper Pin DHO

Doug Brotherton 03/28/2017

In a game against the San Antonio Spurs, the Cleveland Cavaliers ran this box set. It resulted in a layup for Kyrie Irving. It was one of the few things that went well for the Cavs on this night, as the Spurs cruised to an easy victory. This set allows Kyrie to get down hill, but what makes the set so effective is the positioning of the Cavs personnel. Don't be surprised to see this, in a key moment, in this year's NBA playoffs. The "Pistol Action" has become very popular with teams at all levels. The LA Clippers ran this BLOB in Game 1 of their first round match-up against the Utah Jazz. It resulted in a wide open look. The play features multiple options. The double stagger flows into "Pistol Action." With a decision maker like Chris Paul, look for the Clippers to use this action in a variety of ways. See More

Basketball Play - Brad Stevens - DHO Swing STS (ATO)

Brad Stevens - DHO Swing STS (ATO)

Doug Brotherton 04/17/2017

Brad Stevens ran this ATO set in the first half of Game 1, against the Chicago Bulls. It resulted in back-to-back baskets for the Celtics. The first basket was a lob. On the second basket, the Celtics ran the set all the way through. The key to the set is that the Celtics used their best shooter to set the back screen, which eliminated the Bulls' ability to help. More coaches should use their best shooters as a screener, when their team is in need of an easy basket. Great design by Coach Stevens! See More
