The Primary Break is most effective when there are clearly defind roles. There is ONE outlet target. There is ONE inbounder on an opponents made FG. The three players not involved in this should SPRINT in their lanes and get to top speed within the FIRST THREE STEPS. Evaluate this on film with every rebound and made FG.
Outlet tips:
Pass can go directly from 1 to 5 on the rim run
2 sprints to the dead corner to make the defense recover 94 feet
Look to "pitch ahead" after one or two dribbles, if you can't, the point guard should "dribble through the wake" made by the recovering defense.
5 posts his man in the paint in transition!
1 gets wide to the sideline on the same side of the floor as the rebound. Ideally, he/she receives the outlet on the run.
2 sprints the ball side lane
3 sprints the weakside line
5 sprints the center lane "Rim Run"
THE KEY TO SCORING IN TRANSITION IS THE FIRST THREE STEPS!
1 looks to pitch ahead as soon as possible. Ideally after one or two dribbles. If available, 1 can pass directly to 5 on the rim run
2 sprints to the dead corner to flatten out the defense
5 slams into his defender and posts IN THE PAINT
3 fills weakside wing
4 trails to top of circle
2 looks to enter to 5. If 2 begins reversal back to 1 the secondary break action begins
At times 1 cannot pitch ahead to 2, when this is the case, 1 should "dribble through the wake" of the recovering defense and run the break from left to right
3 would then continue to the dead corner
4 trails to top of circle
2 fills weakside wing
5 posts his man in the paint
From these spots, the secondary break action begins
