About This Play/Drill

In this diagram and embedded video we look at a drill to work on finishing at the rim. The drill is live but has guided defense. We love to use this drill in the progression seen in the diagrams, progressing from dry technique, then to guided play, and then into a small sided game.

  • Phase 1: "Elbow Rips"

Description: From the elbow, players work on stationary moves (rip, go, jabs, step across, rocker step, c-rip, shot fake) and a designated finish. Players should try to get lower and more explosive with their moves. Players should not look at the dribble but focus on the rim to finish, keeping elbow under the ball. We encourage exploring various finishes using either foot to jump off of and finishing with either hand

  • Phase 2: "Finishing School"

Players start at the elbow and use a stationary move to attack against a guided defender. They are working on creating contact, finishing and protecting the ball. Defense is not completely live, only aiming to stay in front, contest or strip the ball. Jump stop finishes are encouraged but everything else should be full speed. Players should not look at the dribble but focus on the rim to finish, keeping elbow under the ball.

  • Phase 3:

3 on 3 perimeter only with spin and pivot start (this is the only phase that includes pivoting to face the basket so it must be stressed). If you hold the ball at any point it is a turnover. All offense has to originate from outside the three point line (no back cuts, post ups, offensive rebound stick backs, etc). The defense can cover the ball and help in any way they want. We drive to score or draw two defenders, then transfer the advantage with a no hold policy.
