Basketball Play - Iverson UCLA Snap

Iverson UCLA Snap

Doug Brotherton 04/03/2017

Way too often, teams have put the ball into a player's hands, and asked him to be a hero. There is no action being run, and the player dribbles into a contested shot. The goal of this is to give coaches some other actions that they can use to generate a quality shot. See More

Basketball Play - HoopGrind Basketball - "Elbow Chase"

HoopGrind Basketball - "Elbow Chase"

Doug Brotherton 04/07/2017

This box set incorporates our "ELBOW" action. The Elbow action starts in a box set, with guards splitting to the wings. Post lift up the lane line. What I like about this play is the versatility. It can be used to generate an open 3, a post iso, or a high/low look. It can also be used effectively against man-to-man or zone defense, by simply teaching 4 to set the cross screen on the middle of the zone. Basketball Play - Clippers - Stagger Pistol (BLOB)

Clippers - Stagger Pistol (BLOB)

Doug Brotherton 04/16/2017

The "Pistol Action" has become very popular with teams at all levels. The LA Clippers ran this BLOB in Game 1 of their first round match-up against the Utah Jazz. It resulted in a wide open look. The play features multiple options. The double stagger flows into "Pistol Action." With a decision maker like Chris Paul, look for the Clippers to use this action in a variety of ways. See More

Basketball Play - Brad Stevens - DHO Swing STS (ATO)

Brad Stevens - DHO Swing STS (ATO)

Doug Brotherton 04/17/2017

Brad Stevens ran this ATO set in the first half of Game 1, against the Chicago Bulls. It resulted in back-to-back baskets for the Celtics. The first basket was a lob. On the second basket, the Celtics ran the set all the way through. The key to the set is that the Celtics used their best shooter to set the back screen, which eliminated the Bulls' ability to help. More coaches should use their best shooters as a screener, when their team is in need of an easy basket. Great design by Coach Stevens! See More

Basketball Play - Bulls - False Motion Double Down

Bulls - False Motion Double Down

Doug Brotherton 04/19/2017

The Chicago Bulls became the first 8-seed, in NBA history, to take a 2-0 lead in a best of 7 series. Late in the third quarter, with the Celtics on a run, the Bulls went to this set. It resulted in a wide open 3 for rookie, Paul Zipser. He knocked down the triple, and the Bulls never looked back. This false motion set, leads to a double down screen, which creates numerous options. See More

Basketball Play - Spurs - "Fake Hammer Snap" (SLOB)

Spurs - "Fake Hammer Snap" (SLOB)

Doug Brotherton 04/23/2017

The Spurs trailed the Grizzlies by 3, with 22 seconds left, and had the ball on the sideline. Popovich and the Spurs are known for their "Hammer Action," which is a baseline drift play. After a zipper screen to get the ball inbounds, the Spurs designed a "Hammer Action." Behind Kawhi Leonard's drive, they set a down screen for Patty Mills. The misdirection put the Grizzlies into a defensive scramble. On the pass to Mills, Kawhi's defender left to help. Kawhi spaced to the corner, where Mills made the extra pass. This resulted in a wide open 3 for Kawhi Leonard, which tied the game. In the tough scenario of needing a 3, late in the game, the Spurs got the rare uncontested look. A great design, with tremendous execution. Despite Marc Gasol's game winning shot, handing the Spurs a loss, this was the obvious "Xs and Os Play of the Game!" See More

Basketball Play - Elbow Chase

Elbow Chase

Doug Brotherton 04/24/2017

When building your playbook for next season, we want to give you some things to consider. For example, do your sets have anything that make them easy to scout? Do they all start from different formations? Is it difficult to flow from the base offense, into the sets? Do they all use the same action? Do the sets lack versatility? These are all challenges, which coaches must consider, and do not realize until they face the best teams on their schedule. The "Elbow Series" below is an example of some sets that check all of the necessary boxes, which make them a solid addition to your playbook. Read More: http://bit.ly/2pbH6L1 See More
